Thatâs what the rule is for though. The rule was not made to stop the ball travelling at high speed from accidentally hitting lads on the arm from a few yards away a millisecond later
They choked . United were honest and spirited and deserved what they got through base honesty .
Could you provide a ruling on the two Macedonia penalties in this, please?
There was a furious argument among the RTE panel at half-time during this game (which was the A team including E. Dunphy), so furious that all were in agreement as to what the correct decision for both should have been.

Man Utd did not get what they deserved. They are one of the richest clubs in the world and played like a conference team 1 up against a Premier League side for the majority and fluked three goals
Iâd have to see a clearer view on both but from that the first not a penalty and the second correctly awarded as a penalty
Again this is by the rules of the game, Iâm not saying the rule is perfect because it isnât but you canât just tell referees to go against the rule book as FIFA have done
They had a huge number of injuries and their talisman suspended . They were rank outsiders and applied themselves well there tonight , albeit they were poor quality wise . The real stony is again a tog shitting exercise by PSG . United were plucky albeit poor enough but it was good enough .
Dunphy was going mental at both players saying both penalties were correctly awarded.
PSG had two of their best players unavailable also. Would Man Utd have defended as a unit like they did with Pogba in midfield? Iâm not sure
I only saw the second half but I donât think PSG were that bad at all, individual errors cost them in a half they dominated. Sometimes the better team loses
Iâd have to see the McAteer one in better quality. Dunphy is a great man but it wouldnât be the first thing he got wrong
Did the way PSG hit the post from an acute angle on the left late in the game before losing it remind you of Tipperary v Clare last year?
I hope so.
Very good effort by Bernat actually after Mbappe completely fucked up the chance. Iâd say Lindelof would have blocked it anyway
Nobody is disputing that PSG have better players but thankfully games arenât won on paper . PSG were awful there tonight and man United werenât great but Man U had honesty and cut . PSG deserved nothing tonight .
McAteerâs one looked like an almost involuntary reflex action where he was surprised the ball cleared the attacker.
Phelanâs was pretty cowardly actually. But thatâs the Manchester City influence for you.
They may well have been awful in the first half but from what I saw PSG played well and Man Utd got a penalty out of nothing to win it
I think the handball rule is atrociously written, and a lot of the problem is in the initial naming of âdeliberate handballâ. As @sidney says it seems wrong to narrowly interpret the description of the rule as being confined to cases where a player wilfully and intentionally handles the ball.
A more fitting description of the foul would be âdeliberate acts/movements which result in the ball being handledâ. This would better exclude reflexive protections of the body that cause minimal interference with the result of a shot/pass, but still cover movement of arms away from the body (which should be penalties, and generally are in the way the rule is applied).
Not sure who the official MOTM was, probably Rashford, but I thought McTominay, Shaw and Dalot when he came on were all inspirational for the Red Devilâs tonight.
I took a picture below of the BT studio that they showed when United scored the winner. Owen
Glory glory glory Man Utd! Glory glory Man Utd!
Nice pivot
Listen to what I mean, not what Iâm saying
