The story going around our town was that the local halting site was being used by the occupants as a location to pimp out kids.
The place is cleared now anyway.

A very negative view of mainstream education and standard health practices is a core problem. A suicide rate of 10%+ is simply ridiculous which surely correlates with those two issues. Life expectancy is 15-20 years below the wider population.
I don’t know how that can be changed however.

Told her get the price and I’ll try and better it fir her( know a lot of tradesman)
Anyways she got him to tell her the name and model of boiler n rads etc etc
Did a bit of online research and called a mate ref same-
Turns out she could have saved over e1000 by simply going down my route
Na she wouldn’t listen,
The gouger did the job and convinced her to change more rads in the extension and upstairs
So he came out happy,’
She just didn’t want the hassle of getting someone else and telling ‘ letting down 
’

I’ve a mate a NS teacher in local town with a high population of traveller, half traveller and 3rd/4th Gen never worked/won’t work families. The school has a breakfast club or some such thing. It’s the main reason the kids are brought to school he reckons, otherwise they would stay in bed. He loves the children, very bright and witty and lots of potential but sees them fall away into truancy once 2nd level comes along.

I don’t know either. There is no incentive for them to improve themselves. From what I know, many don’t actually recieve dole, technically they are paid disability payments. Which to me is a total disincentive to seek work.
I’ve often got a comment from travellers that I’m a hard working man. In other words I’m a fucking eejit for working and they are the smart ones.

Purchased my first home in a new development that by the end of my phase was near 35% social and affordable. 1 traveller family and the rest were rehomed from Ballyer and Clondalkin. Traveller family were the friendliest of the lot of them. Johnny worked and was more than courteous. Few incidents of arguing etcs but always when family gatherings happened. I got the impression the other families were always weary of me and thought I looked down my nose at them. I gave up even bothering saluting them but always got a hello from Johnny. Unbelievably, he was the only house ever broken into!!

I’ve had a lot of interaction with the travelling community all my life and it’s has been predominantly positive. I come from the era when there were still tinkers. I recall my father buying buckets from one. They seem to have a strong affinity for hurling and boxing. This years Nicky Rackard hurler of the year, representing the community.
A very traditional people whose culture has struggled to merge with modernity and has led to the development of a very negative sub-culture. Very easy to see how the rejection of their values and general disregard for their culture by mainstream society has contributed to this. In-breeding also has to be a contributary factor.
I disagree with those who bemoan the creation of this thread. It’s important to debate and confront issues and allow the light to shine into the darkest corners.
