Is the team I’d pick of my life time… There’s obviously other players just as good missing from it - but if you’re trying to put out a team with lads in (roughish) positions and not just picking 11 forwards - that’s what I’m picking.

Yes he was a beautiful footballer in the first group stages of the 1982 World Cup. He was found wanting when the going got serious though.

Was he? Brazil stuffed Argentina in the first game of the three team round robin. Socrates scored a great equaliser in the crucial game against Italy. The second two Italian goals were defensive calamities, one given away by a defender in a manner reminiscent of Nathan Collins about 20 minutes ago and the other due to calamitous marking at a corner.

Brazil would have won that World Cup if they’d had defenders who didn’t present goals on a plate to Paolo Rossi.

My first big game was Ireland beating Spain 1-0 in Lansdowne road in 1989 as a 9 year old… I found 5 punts at the bus stop to the train station… Not sure i can include any players from that day, i remember fuck all of it.

Maradonas club career wasn’t really that amazing when you break it down. absolute greatness in serie A but very short lived greatness and did fuck all in Europe. Did he do much at international level bar 86? The clips of him in 90 v brazil were class in fairness.

Always felt it was shocking disrespectful to the man to refer to him as “fat Ronaldo”. Given what he went through in his career, he got an awful lot out of himself and always played with a smile on his face unlike the other pouting bollocks.
