US Masters Golf from Augusta National Golf Club

How did McGinley get the Ryder Cup captaincy?

Fairly sure he done a few commentary’s for a spell. I distinctly remember a player saying Harrington new more about their own game than they did themselves.

An auld soundbite. Probably one of the yanks

He was a terrific match play player.

Ya I just remembered it as he probably wasn’t wrong. Harrington seems a really good egg.

The feeling was thst it was Irelands turn to have a captain. Additionally it came at a time when Harrington and McIlroy were influential. The candidates were McGinley, Des Smith and Eamon Darcy. McGinley canvassed Harrington and McIlroy and got them on board. Des and Eamon were gone from the pro game too long.

Also, he holed a putt to win the ryder cup. B.A.L.L.S

The guy has them

Himself and Harrington won a world cup as well, a massive achievement at the time. Lads cutting McGinley are only sour cunts. He achieved more than his talent which means the man had something about him and has earned the right to talk about the game

That’s fair

He is not a great commentator though

None of them are. They have to speak a certain way for Sky. All positive, sell the game, be happy.

Dougherty is the only one half edgy and he is holding back a lot of the time

Also, I find they dumb down commentary and analysis at the majors for all the casual watchers.

No idea. I don’t follow golf. I might watch it in during the Open, the Masters and the Ryder Cup and that’s about it. I did flick it on last night for an hour. Quite apart from his lack of playing pedigree, McGinley’s delivery is a bit suspect. A grating, whiney kind of voice with a tendency to chop his words. The dulcet tones of Peter Alliss or even Ken Brown out on the course, it is not.

Isn’t he a compulsive liar as well? Probably bluffed his way into things

Along with all the other sports/teams you relentlessly comment on. Huge surprise.

He’s a very good plamáser, world-class even. He did very well in his stint hosting the Irish Open, brought it up to his father’s neck of the woods in Donegal and down here to Lahinch. Had a part in keeping those events in the Rolex series too, which is massive for getting the big names

Paul McGinley is the Bressie of golf

Johnny Miller and Ken Venturi were the two leading expert analysts on the telly in the US for years. You don’t have any gravitas with the viewing public in the US unless you’ve done it as a player and won the big prizes.

Fuck off to America so

You were the one who made the big point that Major winners are seemingly not in the business of providing expert golf analysis on the telly. The factual inaccuracies of your statement are pointed out to you and all you can do is hurl personal abuse.

You need to up your game.

Are the two lads you mentioned still doing commentary are they? Ken is dead and Johnny is retired. Who’s replaced them?

I believe the heir to the crown of Ken Venturi as the lead golf analyst on CBS is a bloke called Nick Faldo. Probably a bit before your time but Faldo won 3 Opens and 3 US Masters back in the late 1980’s and 1990’s.

He pitched the idea of the blue and yellow fish and it was game over.
