US Politics - A Society in Meltdown

It depends entirely on the Republicans. Democrats wrap up their 3 days of opening presentations today then the Republicans have three days, followed by 2 days of questioning. Then the fun starts. The next logical step is to call witnesses but most Republicans don’t want that. However it only takes four Republicans out of 53 to get a majority in favor of witnesses, there are 3 or 4 that might vote that way, Susan Collins for sure and maybe Romney. If they vote for witnesses it will go on for weeks, if they vote against witnesses then the Republicans will move to a vote and acquit late next week.

Another complexity is this is really interfering with the Democratic candidate selection, Sanders and Warren can’t do any campaigning.

Questioning Trump? Would that be televised?

Trump won’t appear, his lawyers wouldn’t let him. He can also block any witnesses from the administration they call citing executive privilege.

Alan Dershowitz is an outstanding attorney. Giving an absolute masterclass here on constitutional law and the protections afforded to all citizens, even the President of the United States. If abuse of power and obstruction of Congress were valid reasons for impeachment, every president in US history would have been removed from office.

He’s directly lecturing the Democratic House leaders now, like a schoolmaster of old.

Trump exonerated.

CNN in meltdown.

Rachel Maddow has self immolated.

But Nancy is philosophical I suppose?

This is fucking hilarious. Adam Schiff’s big moment arrives, the last question from the Senate and his chance to make his closing argument that he’s been practicing for a week. Like a speeding duck, Jerry Nadler beats him to it, ignoring his frantic pleas.

This lad would make a fine addition to the forum

Voting almost concluded in the Democratic Iowa caucuses, the first state to vote. Results are delayed due to “quality control issues”, most likely Bernie has won in a landslide and the DNC are preparing their damage control.

This is now a debacle, almost 11PM ET and no sign of a result.

Sounds like the IT bastards are at fault again. The caucus system is mad, hundreds milling around in designated counting centers, they form groups for each candidate and get counted. There are about 1700 centers in Iowa to facility about 700k Democratic voters.

Historically the votes were called in and consolidated at a state DNC center. A bright spark decided to automated the process using an app which would speed things up :joy:. Well the app doesn’t work and the 1700 centers have been told to call in their results to headquarters. There’s no one to answer the phone :joy:

The candidates have started their victory speeches now even though there are no results. You simply couldn’t make it up.

Ta Ana athas orm.

They are rigging the result for Sleepy Joe.

One crowd openly gerrymander and the other apparently organise some human version of the Nintendo game lemmings to choose their candidate.

Banana Republic.

Donald Trump’s approval rating is the highest it’s been in three years, per Gallup.

The Jan 16 to 29 poll found Trump has a 49% approval rating. The bulk of this is from the 94% of Republicans who approve of his work. He also got a boost from a 42% approval rating among independents, an increase of five points. Democratic approval shrunk from 10% to 7%.

Trump also has the highest approval for his handling of the economy (63%) of any president since George W Bush had high approval ratings in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Donald!! Donald!! Donald!!

In fairness, it’s not hard to beat a crowd that can’t count their own votes in a relatively small state.

A day later, still no result.
