axelrod, formerly of the obama campaign nailed it when he said the dems speak to minorities like missionaries spoke to people in foreign lands
Cats and dogs were the real winners today.
They can live again
He said working class people.
Itās the economy, stupid
An old adage for a good reason.
Guys, these may be troubling & scary times for many of us. The world might be about to burn but I suggest we all take a leaf out of John Mullaneās book & call his 2008 All Ireland Final display to mind. Just look after your own patch & no more about it - we canāt control what we canāt control.
It might also be an opportune time to introduce a media &/or social media diet. You may have heard of the concept already, but constantly consuming news thatās upsetting to you canāt be good for the head, or the soul. Iām not saying you should stick your fingers in your ears & completely avoid it (aka the @dodgy_keeper re Manchester United) but it might be worth limiting/restricting the time you spend reading about this fragile world.
A few practical tips to implement it:
- Donāt sleep with your phone by your bed
- Move social media and/or news apps off your main screen
- Set a timer for consuming news/social media daily & donāt exceed it. This doesnāt include TFK & you should increase your engagement levels here.
- Make a list of your favourite sites (e.g., aforementioned TFK) & restrict your browsing to them - be strict about this.
- Similarly, only follow reliable & genuine accounts/individuals ONLINE (e.g., @glenshane on TFK) & avoid those who deal in the currency of grift, conspiracy, hate, toxicity & division.
Also consider taking up new hobbies, particularly those that have health benefits & provide you with opportunities to meet nice people. Volunteering is a great option here. Get some fresh air & steward at Parkrun or make some brownies for a charity cake sale. The opportunities are endless.
We shall overcome. In fact, to misquote The Beatles:
We can woke it out.
Again itās obvious to anybody with a basic handle on psychology and how people react to one another.
May looked physically vulnerable and traditionally feminine and spoke in a feminine way. She was not demonstrative in her power. This was a major reason for her electoral failure and for her torrid time as a leader in general.
Thatcher and Merkel portrayed themselves as battleaxes, they appropriated a stereotypical idea of male power into their persona. May didnāt do that. I obviously wouldnāt have voted for her because sheās a Tory and I intensely dislike the Tory party but Iām merely giving you a basic psychology lesson as to how traditionally hegemonic groups like men think.
apologies, youre correct. but the point still stands
I suspect it is more that a lot of women donāt feel threatened on abortion with Trump & buy the notion that Roe v Wade wasnāt the be all and end all. I thought it would he a bigger factor myself, but it clearly wasnāt as big as we thought it might be.
The Trump team ran some fairly effective ads on trans issues and Harris which imo would have appealed to a lot of suburban mothers.
Too late for the squirrel sadly
Peanut is a martyr now.
In the arms of 99 virgin squirrels as we type
Her problem was she was hopelessly incompetent.
This is a dishonest way of framing a vicious and concerted attack on an extremely vulnerable minority as āan appeal to concerned parentsā.
What they do is basically the same as saying āyou wouldnāt want your son to be a gay freakā would you?
Itās like policy by Mrs. Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances. The most important thing is not to treat a vulnerable young person with compassion, the most important thing is to keep up appearances and viciously and forcibly suppress your childās self should you feel embarrassed about what they are.
It also ignores the fact that an obsession with extreme porn is intrinsically linked to the appeal of Trump among young men.
That some women still donāt care about the issue of having a right to your own body is an unfortunate product of a thousands of years old ruling male culture.
Theyād very likely bloody well care if their daughter was raped at age of 13 and made pregnant. If they still didnāt care, they arenāt fit to have children.
Itās also a product of a culture that says ādo not care about anybody else, ever, and the bad things that might happen to themā.
The feel good factor and sense of can-do attitude that President Trumpās win has generated is just something else.
Iād agree with all that tbf.
Her successors make her look like a genius.
Interestingly Trump will likely get less votes than he did last time.
Harris will underperform Biden by over 15m votes. Donāt know the exact numbers, but there were almost certainly more available voters than four years ago
Voter apathy is probably the real story of the election.
Hereās the thing. I agree with Axelrod. The Democratic party does take minority votes for granted.
But hereās another thing. No poster on this thread, nor any commentator Iāve seen, has come up with a plausible idea for how the Democrats would have actually won.
Any ideas Iāve seen floated are ludicrous and deluded and simply do not take reality into account.
Even my own view, which is that Harris should have vocally stood the fuck up to Israel, is not a realistic path to winning an election. It would have been the right thing to do morally but it was a path to electoral suicide and a crushing defeat.
The one thing the Democrats most needed to do when they got into power was to crush Trump, go after him with everything they had. This was a moral imperative because he was a ticking time bomb in American politics and society, a criminal, seditious fascist poison. They didnāt do that. They were asleep on the job. They dressed up their negligence as regards Trump by calling it āan attempt to unifyā. You canāt unify with a crocodile. Now they reap the whirlwind of fascism unleashed and they and ordinary Americans will get it good and fucking hard up the you know what.
