It’s extremely hard to discredit people who run as deplorables. You can’t really damage the reputation of somebody who embaraces the persona of being one of the worst people on earth.
Trump is still going strong even though he’s a serial rapist and a paedophile.
Run on low expectations and people can never be disappointed. Run on high expectations and people can only ever be let down.
If somebody runs as a deplorable, they’re even able to throw in the odd thing that makes people raise their opinion of them. This is what Carlson is doing now. “He might be a cunt, but he’s telling it like it is™ on Israel”.
It’s really only people who don’t run as deplorables who run the risk of being brought down in a smear campaign.

Yes he would be. Trump has very much indulged anti-Semitism too but Carlson would blow anti-Semitism right into the mainstream ten times worse.
Carlson could easily win a presidential election in a landslide with 60% of the vote for the simple facts Republicans won’t desert the Republican candidate in numbers whoever that candidate is, but lots of naturally Democratic leaning voters will absolutely switch if that Republican candidate is going in properly hard on Israel and telling the basic home truths that have never, ever, ever been told by a powerful person in US politics. That’s an issue they’d be extremely willing to switch their vote on.
I think that’s all fairly off the wall stuff even by the standards of the day and I don’t think it’ll happen. The only problem with my prediction is I know the square root of fuck all about any of this.
Sure the people who said “that could never happen” have been completely wrong at every stage.
