1999 was Gatty’s annus horribilis - and given how much more inept Ireland displays in knockout games since then have been whitewashed, a four point loss to an under rated Argentina team doesn’t look so bad in hindsight

He has barely put a foot wrong as a coach in the last 20 years

Two solid decades of success and improving teams hugely, be it Ireland, Wasps, Wales, or the British Loins

In four World Cups, he has never lost a knockout game by more than four points

The fact the lions couldn’t beat New Zealand was shameful. I’d have coached them to beat Australia. He’s pretty much viewed as a failure by Welch fans. Only for Shaun Edwards he’s nothing. Possibly blessed too his attack coach bet on England and got himself removed.

He isn’t in the frame. He has already ruled himself out of 2021 essentially by taking the Lions.

That means it will be 2023 at the earliest before he can take it, and that really is predicated on 1) Gatland performing well with the Chiefs 2) the next ABs coach performing badly at the next World Cup. He’ll be 60 then, realistically the last window he can take it. It is far from a cert.

I think this go round was his chance, but the NZRU don’t really hire outside of the NZ rugby system ecosystem. Gatland has never really been in the NZ system. Him taking the Chiefs and Lions was recognition of that I think. In my view the All Blacks wouldn’t hire someone with the record he has vs the SH.

I wonder has there ever been a coach of Wales who later went on to coach New Zealand, and if so, what their record is like?

watched the match this morning, with a mate from Wales. He played through all the grades for Wales, bar senior and lined out for Llanelli for a few years at the end of the amateur era. He was like a dog after the match. His parting comment to me was, that’s two semi finals under Gatland that we’ve fucked away, when we had the better team and players.

He underachieved with wales in my opinion. He’s absolutely hated in New Zealand too. Pretty sure they’ve called out his style on multiple times. He’d have to probably coach a super rugby franchise first to have any chance.

They’d have mixed views on Gatland in Wales. Wales have a very demanding rugby public. They were the preeminent international team in European rugby for the guts of a century up until the early 1980’s when the collapse of the steel industry and the mass exodus to rugby league decimated the Welsh game. The feeling in Wales was when rugby went professional, the old order would be restored. It took a few years to bed down put when the first Grand Slam since 1978 was won under Mike Ruddock in 2005, the view was they were back in their rightful position to stay.

Gatland was under pressure coming into this season, not having won a Championship since 2012 under his stewardship. Even when they won the Grand Slam this year, there were mutterings from the Welsh rugby public that only Italy scored more tries. There’s an expectation in Wales, not only that they win, but they win in style like the team of the 1970’s did.
