Warren Gatland Appreciation Thread

Theyā€™d strings and o gara too.

Did you challenge him or shit your togs?

World class in 99, ah schtap

They are hopping about like a pan full of dennys here. Gatland has had his teams competitive at world cups and has an unparalleled record of success. He had half a team injured, and was shaded by a roided up nation of drug cheats in a tightrope game.
We, on the other hand, had few injuries in this world cup, and kicked the ball out of play to only lose by a six points to Japan, who then got massacred by the same side that half a Welsh team under gatland went toe to toe with, whilst we got fucking massacred by the all blacks in a game that was over by half time.
In the previous world cup, we continue to use a couple of injuries as an excuse for getting absolutely butchered by an Argentinian side who got beat out the gate in their next game.
:joy:
ā€œI watched it with a Welsh lad who played for Llanelli who said gatland was rubbishā€ :grinning:

Ah right, Iā€™ve finally figured out who @ChairmanDan is.

@gilgamboa what did you make of Gatlandā€™s call to withdraw Dan Biggar half way through the second half? Felt whatever chance Wales had of closing the deal depended on the calm assurance of Biggar at out half. Patchell is only emerging and has been flaky enough in his international career to date. He went to pieces in the England match at Twickenham earlier this year after some run of the mill Eddie Jones barbs beforehand. That drop goal attempt in the dying moments with field position will haunt Welsh rugby for a long time.

I like you as a poster, I think you write fluently and think cogently, but I think youā€™re wrong

Was that not injury enforced? Patchell is a good ten. I like him a lot but whoever made the call to take the drop goal should be shot. It cost them the match.

Biggar wasnā€™t having the best day himself and my first thought at the time when I saw him being called ashore was that the painkillers must be wearing off. The battering that misfortune has gotten in this WC no way should he have been playing. Same with the Fox. A shadow of his best

It was actually distressing to watch Parkes, Davies and North game limited to chasing overegged box kicks from Davies a player with so much more to offer

I hope Pivac will finally make some use of the magnificent back line talent available to Wales

Iā€™m not. Iā€™ve read the Western Mail and followed various other Welsh media outlets on rugby for years and am in Wales regularly enough. Gatland was coming under increasing criticism coming into 2019 for a failure to deliver a Championship since 2012 and a very poor record against the Southern Hemisphere Big 3.

A more experienced out-half like Stephen Jones would never have ill-advisedly gone for a low percentage drop goal shot in the last few minutes of a World Cup semi-final

Warren knows all about freshening things up during the WC cycle. Didnā€™t he tip off for 12 months to another job without a look over his shoulder

Your friend is wrong

Gatty has done a wonderful job

In fairness to Gatland, he sorted out Wales forward play which had become very soft, dating back to not long after the days of the Pontypool Front Row. Thatā€™s no more than youā€™d expect from a former Waikato front rower.

Gatland is a shrewd operator and I never really could understand how he stuck with Rob Howley as backs coach almost to the very end. Howley hadnā€™t a breeze and Welsh backline play hasnā€™t been good for a long time. Things will improve in that regard with Stephen Jones involved and glimpses of that were already visible in this World Cup.

Former Llanelli Scarlets coaches donā€™t have such a great record when they coach Wales

Former Llanelli scrum half Clive Rowlands had a pretty decent record as Wales coach in the 1970ā€™s.

I donā€™t think he coached Llanelli though

The great Carwyn James was in situ

James famously never coached the Welsh team
