Warren Gatland Appreciation Thread

Warren has pedigree. He’ll get it sorted come the World Cup. It would be typical of Irish’s rugby fans to get excited about a 6 nations game.

Ireland beat a team half of whom should be in a nursing home

Not the greatest coaching master stroke to pick them all so ?

He played it wonderfully. He can shift them on now or they simply need to up their game. Genius stroke really.

I’d say he has little choice. I’d give him a couple of years, but there’s little coming through from what I can see. The Welch are an odd bunch anyway.

It’s a serious test of Gatland’s coaching ability. There’s no Shaun Edwards this time and the Welsh defence was an utter shambles for the first half hour yesterday. A lot of Gatland’s successes over the years based on the defensive platform Shaun Edwards provided.

Wales were at a low ebb in 2008 when Gatland took over but there was a lot of talent there and almost all of a squad that had won a Grand Slam under Mike Ruddock in 2005. It was a Dads Army team Gatland fielded yesterday. Judging by Wales results at U20 grade in recent years and the performance of the Welsh regions, the well of talent has run dry for the moment.

Gatland looked shook watching that at times yesterday. Ireland blew them away in the first half. It was all about restoring a bit of pride after that.

I see the eddie osullivan fanboys are crowing this morning

Gatland absolutely ignored the bigger picture when he was Welsh coach and ignored the clubs long term position. He never thought he’d be back of course.

I don’t think there was one Welsh player who’d you’d take over his opposite number yesterday from the starting teams.

Few good prospects there like Dyer and the lad at 12.

Wales are a bit like Kilkenny in hurling or Kerry in football, they’ll always have good rugby players. Their structures and domestic game have been an absolute mess for 20 years though. They had a particularly gifted generation for the bones of 15 years which papered over the cracks.

How long is Gatland back for? It’s difficult to see them winning more than 1 match in the Championship and they could well lose all 5. They have a favourable enough World Cup draw and of they can avoid elimination at the pool stage, for a 4th time at the World Cup, they’ll have a shot at making a semi final on the weak side of the draw.

a lot of the thomond park crew would still favour him over gatty

Eddie O’Sullivan, notwithstanding the fact that he is a native of Youghal, is in many ways more a product of Connacht rugby than Munster rugby.
