Waterford selector Eoin Murphy looking forward to new challenge
Tuesday, May 1, 2018
By Cian OâConnell
Waterford selector Eoin Murphy admits the Deise face a significant âchallengeâ after being forced to relinquish home advantage for two Munster Hurling Championship matches.
Murphy, though, believes that Waterford can still produce in what promises to be a hugely interesting round robin series. âItâs a tough one," Murphy admits. "We would have liked it to be played in Waterford but it is what it is.
"The thing is that Walsh Park is going to be developed and future generations will hopefully get to witness Munster Championship there. For us, travelling away is a challenge. Even logistically, going up so far.
"Thurles is a bit like home, we play a lot of our games there. Even going to Cork previously probably wouldnât have been as bad.
"Limerick and Ennis, our track record in Ennis probably isnât great but 2018 is going to take on a life of its own, a bit like 2017 did for us.
âWe are looking forward to the challenge, too. There is something nice about going into the cauldron that is Cusack Park with the home team and the crowd and the majority of people against you. You can motivation out of that as well.â
With four games in as many weeks will the travelling have an effect with the short turnaround? âIt certainly could,â Murphy says. "You donât know where the little things are going to fall out of. "You plan meticulously for this, that and the other and you donât know, it could be anything.
"We deal with it in trying to stay level-headed, no matter what happens. Weâre turning it into a challenge for the group: to go away to try to win three games. Try to win all games.
"But I think a team that can win three games out of this Championship should be safe. Maybe two will do, but weâre going out to give it the best we can on the first Sunday and move on from that regardless.
âThe challenge for us as management, regardless of what happens that Sunday â win, lose or draw â the players arrive in on the Tuesday night ready to go again and not dwelling on if they played bad or won Man of the Match. Draw a line under it and move on.â
Murphy also confirmed that Austin Gleeson (ankle and back) and Pauric Mahony (finger) suffered knocks, but they should be available for the Championship. âNo, I donât think there is huge concern over them,â Murphy added.
âAnother Conor Prunty, one of our panel members may have ignited an old injury that he was just after getting back from. Generally, I think weâre okay. Four weeks out, I think weâre in a good place. Hopefully it will stay like that.â
Gleeson is fine it seems the Waterford lads are putting out the false rumors early.
Kieran Bennett gone travelling, these lads have no faith in winning an AI at all.
@Fagan_ODowd, when was the last time Waterford fielded a championship team without a Mount Sion representative in the starting XV?
1934
Waterford team is not too bad 1-9 all things considered. Selected forward line is threadbare though. Patrick Curran the only one of the 6 selected forwards who saw any action in the All Ireland Final, just a few minutes at the end.
Mahony has been selected as a forward.
He was wing back on the selected team, but I would expect him to start at centre forward.
Badly rode by officials. Credit to Padraig Mahoney for his classy interview after.
Agreed
Good start to proceedings here in Limerick. Thatâs a handy minor team.
Maybe it had something to do with the fact that Waterford were missing four of their back line from last years All Ireland final today - Shane & Darragh Fives, Tadhg de Burca and Barry Coughlan, having to play injured players because resources were so threadbare and having to make do without some of their top players Noel Connors, Pauric Mahony, Austin Gleeson, Kevin Moran, Shane Bennett and Maurice Shanahan in their first two games.
You really donât like Waterford though so youâll put in the chip digs when theyâre down and have handled adversity with dignity and magnanimity. I reckon it all goes back to you predicting Cork to hammer Waterford in last years semi final for weeks beforehand only for Cork to get hammered by 11 points.
Christ almighty, they were shit today, donât be so fucking petty
Youâre the one thatâs been petty when its comes to Waterford. We get it, youâre from East Cork close to the Waterford border and you donât like them. Waterford upset you so much you were even having a cut at @Fagan_ODowd for his magnanimity in not having a cut at that gobshite of a referee and umpire last week.
