We were in Division 3 in 1985, in a league of 4 8 team divisions. We lost to Mayo and went up second in that division so we were effectively the 18th ranked team. That was pretty bad and weâre not back there yet or even close. But we have had a decade of very little coming through at under age so thatâs not great.
Kerry were a reasonable team in 93. We took our eye off the ball and paid the price but it was an anomaly in a decade of some progress. The two Munster finals in 82 and 83 were much worse as was the All Ireland in 2008. That hiding came out of the blue. We genuinely thought we had a chance.
Definitely had a chance after they won the semi final but Davyâs âpsychologyâ and ego took ever then to ruin the lead in. Letâs rough them up like.
KK were great an all but 07 & 08 were quare handy wins.
I think Queally doesnât have a tactical bone in his body.
The random placement of Michael Kiely seemed like something he seen Cahill try with Jack Fagan so he thought heâd do similar. There was little to no scores in that team yesterday. Shane Bennett being chanced in the forwards again. How many more times. Kiely and full forward and Jack Prendergast at half forward and Shane bennet wing back if he wasnât trying to be clever. He would have had Leavy for midfield and to cover a leaky half back line.
We had 3 (I think) lads featuring who play junior club hurling. And no one raves about any of them as so good that they are wasted down there. One of them was taken for a good few scores by Roanmore in the junior final last year. And is now going to step up to intercounty.
I appreciate Queally leaving no stone unturned but calling fellas from that level doesnât even make the training sessions good.
True but itâs a huge step up to senior inter county. There are currently lads on that panel that are miles away from that level. Not their fault but Iâd be very sceptical about some of them and their ability to improve beyond all recognition.
Donât know about the disrespectful to Carlow bit. Most of the Waterford marquee players are currently out with various knocks and ailments. What yesterday showed yet again is Waterford have no depth. The best Waterford teams of the last 25 years came up short for the same reason and because they were probably always carrying 1 or 2 even in the starting XV.
As you said, youâd wonder about general levels of awareness and a complete failure to see that ambush coming yesterday. There was no bite or urgency in Waterford at all and they should have been completely alive to the fact that Carlow were a dangerous proposition yesterday. Carlow would be carrying a few passengers too from sheer lack of numbers but they have 4 or 5 players that Waterford and most counties would only be too glad to have.
Ultimately Waterfordâs year will probably come down to what happens against Clare in Walsh Park on 27 April.
were you in Walsh Park that famous (infamous) day in 1993 Fagan?
Kerry were decent by Kerry standards back then. beat Clare in the league in Tralee in late,1995, strong Clare team admittedly a bit groggy in the middle of all ireland celebrations
I was.
Kerry gave us an awful fright down in Tralee in the 1st round in 1998 as well. Our annual mirabilus was nearly over before it began. Big Dan dug us out in the end with 7 or 8 points from play.
Iâm well used to negative comments attaching to our county warriors wearing the jersey and may have burst into prosaic lamentations of our own heroes in the past but the prospects outlined here are pitiful.
On the plus side the weaknesses have been outlined and a swift call from the County Board could ignite the flame.
I think 1998 was Kerryâs last real time, the Kerry hurlers gave someone a test in Munster. Big Dan dug ye out of a hole that night in Tralee, he was on fire especially in the closing stages. The late Seamus McIntyre (Kenmare) was full back for Kerry that evening. He was corner back in 1993 , back then the kerry hurling team always had a player or two from Kenmare or Kilgarvan. Seamus was a great servant to the Kerry hurlers. He sadly passed away in a traffic accident in the very early 2000s.
Limerick have Hego and CON likely starters both, with junior clubs. Both are freaks, but youâd be foolish to be ruling out any player at junior contributing.
The important thing is the academy to catch these lads early. Doesnât really matter a fuck what club you are with then.
Divisional teams are clearly a good idea for the county teams. But they are probably not so clearly a good idea for clubs.
Just look at Kilkenny with the Glenmore contingent when they were down in Junior around 2016 or Walter Walsh playing for Tullogher in junior in 2023. Kerry too obviously but thatâs different given the grading system there. Nothing wrong with fielding a junior player. They canât help where they were born and more power to them if they resist moving to a senior club to try further their inter-county credentials as has happened a couple of times in Wexford in the past decade. (Dunbar and D Doyle).
yep 2003 qaulifier in Tralee, waterford hammered kerry in munster
Shane Brick had Brian Geary on the back foot and Liam Jap Boyle took 4 or 5 points off Mark Foley. Limerick werent great that year. Shane Brick had a a 21 yard free that came back off the cross bar at a crucial stage, if it had gone in âŚ
