They’re a fairly sour lot Roanmore. cc @Fagan_ODowd
Did you notice at the presentation last night, how a lot of the adult folk started a Roanmore chant as the presentation was going on and the players and backroom team walked off as the Ballygunner captain was saying his few words.
I’d actually forgotten about K Mahony, but with Philip on the wrong side of 30 it’s back to the backs for Kevin if he wants a game. His style and aggression seem well suited to the half back line tbf
Kevin Mahony has had a moderate year for club and county. Not really inter-county standard. He’s got a petulant steak too. Should have been sent off against DLS.
The Mahony’s themselves thought he was going to be the best of them. Underage he was a seemingly way more committed to hurling and had a lot more skill than the other 3 brothers.
It’s all too cold and clinical alright. Now they might be a sound bunch off the field as individuals but I have little time for clubs whose aim is winning Provincial and All Ireland honours at the outset of any given season,. For the remaining 99% of clubs winning their county championship is the pinnacle, as it should be.
While their dominance is shite in Waterford, they are the best thing about the Provincial and All Ireland Club Hurling series. Borrisileigh’s Munster Club win in 2019 is enhanced 10 fold because of who they beat in the Final. St Thomas’s All Ireland win in 2024 is marked up hugely too because they beat Ballygunner along the way. Ballyhale, for all their history and success and despite there being no cup given out on the day, would see their All Ireland Semi Final win in December 2022 as one of their sweetest ever victories.
Are they really? I’d be hard pressed to tell one Mahony/Sullivan from the other for all their omnipresence. Fierce monotonous hurling for the most part.
I’d prefer teams who come and make themselves known for 5 or 6 years before fading off again; Birr, Portumna etc. Ballygunnar have been a constant on TG4 screens for 15 years or more now. A bit more variety is needed
The whole thing really revolves around them. If you cant win the All Ireland, beating Ballygunner is the next best thing.
They’ve played in nearly all the great club games over the past 7 or 8 years. Vs Borrisileigh, Ballyhale (numerous), Na Piarsaigh (numerous) and St Thomas’s to name a few. I can scarcely think of many that they werent involved in - Thomas’s v OLG 2024 and Thomas’s v Ballyhale 2022 the only two that come to mind.
They’ve managed to create rivalries with all the clubs mentioned above and you could nearly add Loughmore to that list too who they really rubbed up the wrong way.
