DLS won it 3-9 to 0-13. Third goal came right at the end when it was still very much in the balance.
It will be a lively night around Rathgormack/Clonea Power. They beat the big local rivals The Nire by 2 points in the Waterford Senior Football Final. The ladies team, Comeragh Rangers won the Munster Ladies Senior Club Championship for the first time as well this afternoon.
Tipped into the U20 Eastern final between Ballygunner and Dls today and it was the best game of club hurling Iāve seen in a long, long time in Waterford. Dls lead 2-23 to 1-23 in the 20th minute of Extra time before the Gunners hit the last 1-1 in injury time to break Dls hearts. Jack Twomey put on a clinic of free taking while Shane Power impressed again hitting 0-5. Mark Hartley was Ballygunnerās main man. Plenty of fireworks on the sidelines aswell with Wayne Hutchinson and Kevin Moran both seeing red. Dls will be absolutely sick.
I was in at it as well. DLS blew it. Conor Tobin and Mark Hartley both picked up heavy knocks. Bizarre carry on at the presentation afterwards.
Go on ā¦
Ballygunner players, backroom team and supporters were celebrating quite exuberantly on the field afterwards, which in fairness, I donāt think any right minding person would begrudge them after such a dramatic win. There were calls for them on tannoy to come up to stand for presentation. Eastern County Board Chair (or whatever blazer it was, that was overseeing the presentation) got impatient, walked out onto the field and handed the Cup to a Ballygunner official, said āhereās your Cupā ;and walked off. Meanwhile the OāDonnell family who were sponsoring the Cup, were left stranded in the stand, including a young girl from the family holding the Man of the Match trophy. Pat Flynn, County Secretary eventually arrived on the scene and oversaw some sort of a presentation then. There seemed to be confustion as to who was the Man of the Match, the Chair possibly had the name. Eventually after a bit of consultation, Fiachra Cooney was declared MOTM, which I donāt think too many would have any quibbles about.
On another note, John Warren, a great Ballygunner stalwart and founder member of the Club passed away over weekend. His son Niall was the Ballygunner fullback when they made the modern day breakthrough in 1992 and for all their successes in the 1990ās. Niall pre-deceased his father in his early 40ās about 15 years ago after a long illness.
I saw the team lists for this earlier and was struck by the number of recognisable names on both sides. Conor Keane, Jack Twomey, Power x 2 etc for DLS.
Also they were two fairly high powered backroom teams involved.
Did Aaron OāNeill start for BG? They usually pulled Patrick Fitzgerald from U20 games before big Senior games in recent years.
Aaron OāNeill was playing, as was Eoin Cuddihy. Nobody rested today. There was a serious array of talent on both teams as you said.
I asked my young fellow earlier, are you coming in with me to the hurling. He said, I want to watch the Spurs game later. I said forget about that, Spurs are going to be hammered. Weāll go in to the hurling and down to Winterval afterwards. As he said to me there a few minutes ago, I made the right decision.
You have the young lad following Spurs and Waterford hurling? ![]()
You should be reported to Tusla
And he a Carlow man
If DLS could get out of Waterford in the next few years, thereās definitely a Munster and possibly an All Ireland in them.
Young fellows tend to follow their fathers lead when it comes to sporting matters, but you are probably correct!
Oh the ironing from the Laois Kerryman.
Youād love to see it , the real working manās club of the city.
They will have to console themselves with being the second best team in Ireland
That was a divisional final? So whoās left now? Iām presuming Ballygunner are clear favourites either way.
Even quoting Micko now !

Tim Byrne was it? The Eastern Board Chairman. Heād be ignorant enough to do that.
Iād say heās shit sick of them as a club
Thatās the name I heard alright. Is he Erins Own?
