Waterford Hurling (now incorporating intermediate football) 2013 and subsequent years

If he can score 9 or 10 pts from frees a game plus a couple from play id say he’ll be well worth his place.

I suppose if Stephen Bennett isn’t fit he’s an option alright.

Stephen Bennett back for another year. He has given fair service

I know he was in the bad books for getting suspended earlier in the summer, but mad to think five forward substitutes were thrown on ahead of him in the 2017 All Ireland Final.

It would be, but then you realise the manger was Derek McGrath.

Derek had him starting straight out of minor in 2014 but by 2017 had more time for Shane.

For the record the 5 subs used ahead of him that day were:

Maurice Shanahan
Tommy Ryan
Brian O’Halloran
Colin Dunford
Partick Curran

Bennett was better than all of them.

And I’d say the first 3 of those subs were nearly always the first 3 subs brought on and in that order.

Whats the story with De Burca? Injured or retired?

And the 5 starting forwards were Brick, Aussie, Pauric Mahony, Shane Bennett and Jake Dillon. 1 proper forward and 3 backs.

It just never came together for Brian O’Halloran.

Any news on Austin or has that goose cooked?
I’d love to see him get another couple of seasons out of himself.

He’s still there, I believe but hasn’t featured so far. De Burca looked past it last year sadly, as the season wore on. A heavy accumulation of serious injuries over the past few years.

Apparently Austin has been told the door is open for him if he gets himself fit. He has been training daily with a personal trainer, I’m told. I don’t see it happening for him though.

He was an awful size last year, savage effort required to shift that amount of timber

Hurling needs Waterford

Former Hurler of the Year Austin Gleeson is set to return to the Waterford senior hurling panel in the coming days.

The Mount Sion man had earlier this year been reported to have temporarily opted out of the panel for 2026, having needed to assess options due to a number of injury setbacks.

As reported by the Irish Examiner, Gleeson is nearing a return to fitness and is in contention to be part of the panel for the DĆ©ise’s final game of their Allianz National Hurling League Division 1A campaign against Tipperary at Walsh Park on Sunday March 8th.

The 30-year-old made four appearances for his county in 2025 - all of which came as a substitute.

Having made his senior inter-county debut in March 2014, Gleeson is nearing a century in white and blue.

Gleeson showed glimpses of his brilliant best in the 2025 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship, spearheading Mount Sion’s challenge as they reached the county final, before being cast aside by eventual All-Ireland champions Ballygunner.
