Waterford Hurling (now incorporating intermediate football) 2013 and subsequent years

Walsh Park will hardly be used again for May/June/July which is just wrong.

They just do mad things. Like that free back to Nolan. And he twenty yards further back. Let Nolan take the free if you want him to go for it, or if it’s going to be dropped in anyway just drop it in yourself.

Cork got a point straight off that, and the goal came from the puckout straight after I think.

Nolan takes it and a least hits it dead and it’s a completely different story.

They made a hero out of Coleman today firing ball into out numbered forwards and he mopping it up.

If you are going to withdraw forwards, stop hitting it into the one lad left inside on his own with three around him.

They took a sideline a one stage. Launched it. Great cut. Not a Waterford man to be seen under where it landed. Brain dead.

Derek left their best player of the last 10 years on the line!

Galway to Munster and Waterford to Leinster might suit everyone if there isn’t the stomach for massive overhaul in Leinster. Would only make Munster more of a bear pit though.

Munster is the only show in town at the minute, but I wouldn’t be getting excited and ripping the whole thing up because of it. We are only what 6 years into the round robin. KK and Galway will come good again and please god wexford and offaly will get their shit together in time. Kildare are coming and Dublin aren’t too far off and the Munster standard will drop off too in time and everything will be fine.

If you are the 4th best team in munster tough shit. You weren’t going to win an all Ireland anyway.

It’s better than knockout at least the weaker team gets a few games and the opportunity to play together and build.

I would be open to a sixth team in munster getting the tar bate out of them for development purposes. And then the bottom two on each side playing off.

It would dilute it a bit, but it is a disaster for Kildare just getting to the pace of it and then getting relegated.

Must be hard been a Waterford hurling fan. The worst club championship in Ireland is all they have left. At least if Cork or Tipp get knocked out they have a decent club championship at lots of grades.

Such a suggestion from the GAA MUFFINS would make for a great episode of Liveline if nothing else.

Kildare are in me hoop coming. Westmeath shipped 5-28 to Leix today. A few years ago it was “there’s some great work being done in hurling circles in Westmeath”. That’ll be Kildare before long.

Id have to agree. Kildare doing nothing at underage level.

Kildare will win a hurling all Ireland before they win a football all Ireland. Now it might be 2078

To be fair to Westmeath they beat Dublin by 8 points in the minor hurling last week. They had fine underage teams back around 2015/16 too. Beat Wexford in the minor hurling in 15’ and then Kilkenny in U21 the following year.

Waterford could make an All-Ireland semi-final fairly regularly with the old qualifier system in place. They still get their 4 games in the round robin but there’s much more drudgery involved and no trip to Croke Park. Their only championship appearances in HQ since the 2017 final were during the Covid championships of 2020/21. It was a regular haunt of theirs for a 20 year period from 98’ onwards.

Waterford were also just a better team then?

The current system coincides with an all-time stinker of a run at U21/20 level. A single win since the 2016 All-Ireland.

For the good of hurling system should be changed. Provincal championship’s early in year with league championship main competition. Not a hope it will ever happen.

Kildare football is a massive sleeping giant. Sooner or later the sleeping giant will awaken and become the new Mayo and lose five All-Ireland finals in seven years.

I know people said this ten years ago and they’ll probably still be saying it in ten years’ time and they might be saying it in 20, but eventually it will happen.

They were but it’s no coincidence that they reached a final and semi-final when the system reverted back to qualifiers in 2020/21. They’d beat Wexford and Offaly in the qualifiers and have momentum built up to take on Galway/Dublin/Tipp in an All-Ireland quarter-final. I wouldn’t say this Waterford team are significantly weaker than the side of 2011-2014.

Waterford might benefit if they played a few forwards. Derek and ballygunnars success with “plus wans”" is killing them. Dessie was out around midfield today. They might not be good enough to win Munster at the minute. But they should have gotten out of the round robin at least once. That’s on them
