Strong subs if things not going to plan
Its actually a very decent bench but fellas arenāt much good sitting on the bench if the game is nearly over at half time.
Its a double edged sword with Austin. Heās a headline act, and Iām not sure these 20 minute cameos suit his mindset, but heās also not got the full 70 in the legs or lungs.
Darragh Lyons might be the man to follow William Buckley around the place instead of Kenny.
Iād give Waterford a great chance if they can avoid getting blitzed in first 15/20 mins.
Cork will look to score a few quick goals to put game to bed.
If they can avoid this - they have the bench to win it.
Spirited performance but ultimately going nowhere with a dinosaur in Queally at the helm. Heās like a fellow operating an Xtravision store in an age of Netflix
Weāve wasted 4 years now, Queally for 2 and Davy for 2 before that. They have both been disastrous. I wouldnāt be too harsh on him today though, I think some of those players donāt have the stomach for it when it comes to it.
Theyāve got as much as theyāll get of core of players from class of 1995. Inter-county season for Waterford done in all grades now effectively on 8 May. Now for the serious business of can Ballygunner win 13 in a row.
Waterford will have to focus on coming again in a few years and trying to bring through talented current crops of underage players. Cupboard is bare enough in the short to medium term.
Yes unfortunately. Another waste of time club championship ahead and theyāll give Queally another year.
2017 was a right missed opportunity for Waterford when you look back on it. Galway were there for the taking in a game where both sides were very nervous. Was it Niall Burke who won it for galway more or less after the Kevin Moran wide.
The current championship system just doesnāt suit Waterford and Iād expect more voices other than John Mullane look for a cross provincial championship at some point. On most occasions Waterford will beat Dublin/Wex/offaly and historically they beat Galway.
They also got momentum in the old qualifier system by defeating Laois/Antrim etc. They could sneak into a semi final regularly in the old format.
Waterford have the smallest player pool in Munster meaning depth is always tested. Youād wonder is it the reason they always seem to have so many injured players.
Their game management and ability to miss chances at the critical time is also second to none.
Both of these issues were on show today and in the respective minor/u20 championships.
My own better half is from dungarvan and Iām always taken about the lackadaisical attitude to hurling in and around the town. It doesnāt help matters.
The ideal solution is 2 groups of 6 like the League, top Munster finishers across each group play in the Munster Final, similar for Leinster, winners go straight thorough to AISF, losers play the next best from each group in AIQF, only issue then is the Munster council wonāt go for it as they lose the cash cow, Leinster Council would be all for it as fuck all attend their games.
Wford started two clearly injured players there tonight, Daly was strapped up like a mummy.
Are ye being overly harsh on queally? They creditable performances against three teams that ye were a good ways underdogs against. Probably the least strength in depth and a rake of injuries too. And small margins at this level. Thereās only so much queally can do surely?
Put Bennett back in the Waterford team and put a fair ref in charge of the game today and I think ye win it.
Thatās all correct and accurate to a point but ultimately the playing pool that Waterford have at the moment just isnāt up to it. Thatās compounded by a hopeless management team out of their depth at inter-county level.
Iarlaith Daly is hurlingās answer to Darren āSick Noteā Anderton. How many times has he taken the pitch either injured or broken down injured at this stage.
To be fair WD have given everything in their 3 games, theyāre limited but game and keep fighting, Iād be giving Queally credit if anything, at least heās a WD man through and through and not carpet bagging like the previous incumbent.
I fear that could be Bennets last action in a Waterford jersey. Possible ACL.
Yeah, with his hips as well, some servant to his county
Sad if so. He should have an all star anyway.
That didnāt look good for Bennett. Ice and crutches are usually a damning sign of an ACL.
Shame. A wholehearted, unorthodox dinger of a hurler. He deserves a better postscript than this, if that is to be the case.
Waterfordās population is growing, they have a better underage record than Limerick in recent years with an actual AI winning team to lay some hopes on. In the round robin era they now also have regular home games in their own city, whereas previously for years they never had a home game. 20 years ago Waterford were regulars on top of the pile in Munster. I donāt think that was because it suited them to catch other teams out in a knockout championship, I think itās because they had a very good team at the time.
Waterford never won an AI because they always had a few passengers among excellent players.
The current system over stretches their resources.
Hopefully Billy nolans performances not forgotten and he gets a deserved all star
