Waterford Hurling (now incorporating intermediate football) 2013 and subsequent years

Ballugunner have every chance of overhauling Erins Own and Mount Sion, 9 in a row.

Waterford championship is the most boring in Ireland.

Thanks for that

Canā€™t really argue with that. Itā€™s depressing how far ahead they are. The numbers they have is scary. The traditional inner city clubs canā€™t compete. Not sure where the next generation of Mount Sion, Roanmore or Erins Own players are going to come from. De La Salle are insulated somewhat as theyā€™ll be get a few from the college teams. The situation down west isnā€™t much better. The numbers just arenā€™t there for country clubs anymore. We (Abbeyside) are fortunate in that weā€™ve benefited from the population growth on our side of the Colligan. Not a great sign though either when Dungarvan are playing in the lower reaches of underage. And the greatest egnima of all, Tramore. Iā€™m at a loss as to how there has never been any significant inroads there. Sorry that went off into a meandering moan about our current state.

Ian Kenny a big loss for the Gunners this season.

They have to be a bit vulnerable after the season just past.

That was a poor result from roanmore yesterday. I hear they had a bit of a meltdown and had a couple sent off.

Where is Kenny this year?

Abroad

Ballygunner have a big demographic advantage both in terms of numbers and in terms of composition, in that the area is largely white Irish and solidly middle class and as rugby has no appreciable foot print in Waterford these people have no other sporting outlet. However to their great credit they have so far managed their advantage very well and avoided ā€œthe splitā€.

It shouldnā€™t be forgotten that Waterfords last great dominant club, Mount Sion, was also the product of demography. Anyone parking a car around Walsh Park, about 400 yards from the Mount Sion club will have noticed the heavy concentration of council and other housing built in the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s before the focus shifted to building houses in Ballygunner.

As the population in Ballygunner ages the focus will shift to other areas and clubs just as happened to Mount Sion.

Itā€™s a demographic advantage they will have for a while. Thereā€™s over 800 pupils in the national school in Ballygunner and a Gaelscoil as well now with another 200. Twenty five years ago, there was seemingly just the one national school with about 200 pupils.

He is due back the end of the summer?

RIP Pat Sullivan. Godfather of Ballygunner HC and one of the greatest GAA men in the county.
