Wearing of Hurling Helmet compulsory

GAA are bringing in the rule from January 1st 2010 for ALL hurling players to wear a helmet in matches and training.
It’s been in the rules up to U21 for a few years now but I suppose it’s about time it was introduced at all levels.

I wonder what the rules will be for a players starting a game with a helmet but then discarding it during the match.

Would love to have seen an official try to force the likes of Colin Lynch to wear one :pint:

You have to make it mandatory. Official has to apply the rule, if the player resists he’s sent off and the team is fined afterwards by the association.

May not be so much of an issue if the players that were used to it at U21 form more and more of the senior ranks.

There will be no forcing it, lads will just have to wear them, simple as…Presume if a lad takes off his helmet and gets hit a belt on the head wouldn’t be covered by insurance…

Would i be right in saying that helmets without a face guard won’t be allowed either

I think the GAA will find it hard to duck liability if it’s in the rules and they don’t enforce it. Equally, referees might find they are jointly liable.

I’ll be retiring this year so.

Thinly veiled, ‘I’m a hard bastard and I don’t wear a helmet’.

Or alternatively he might not like what it does to his hair-do. :pint:

I suppose it is for the best, a lad in my club lost 6 teeth last year from a fairly innocuous challenge, i have a lovely scar on my forehead(thankfully most of it is above my hairline) from when I was about 17, have worn a helmet ever since…

There was nothing thinly veiled about it. http://cur.cursors-4u.net/smilies/images1/smi26.gif

Explains a lot :pint:

No its more thinly veiled ‘i’ll let on i’m a hard bastard, and the lads will probably believe me as i play hurling in Laois anyway’.

Could just mean I have a fat head either kev?

I would say it will take the likes of Cummins, Donal Og and Fitzhenry a lot of getting used to, seeing as they would have playing all their hurling in goals with no helmet…

Always wore a helmet and on the three occasions that I didn’t I had my head split open each time.
I’d say they were waiting for Lynch to retire.
Goalkeepers are fooked-most of them don’t wear helmets but will now have to get used to them.

I’d agree. I presume they’ll have a go at it, but you just cant see how they could adjust at this stage. I could never get used to them anyway.

Donal g might be able to adjust, he’s used to having things dangling just in front of his face.

As will I

Have noticed a few of the young goalkeepers in clare wear the helmet playing at adult level, probably so used to it at this stage, as does yourman Nash from Cork…

The Vatican will make sure this doesn’t happen.
