Woman jailed for disguising herself as boy to date her own friends

By Tim Moynihan
Monday March 05 2012

A YOUNG woman who disguised herself as a boy to date her own female friends was today jailed for 30 months.
Gemma Barker, who was 19 at the time, gave herself false male identities so she could have sexual encounters with her 15 and 16-year-old victims.
Barker, now 20, was told by Judge Peter Moss that she would be in custody for the first half of the term and serve the remainder on licence.
He said: “I have concluded that these offences are so serious that only a custodial sentence is appropriate.”
The court heard that Barker introduced herself to the girls by using fake Facebook profiles and wore hats and baggy clothes to hide her true identity when she met them in person.
But one of the girls realised something was wrong when she thought the boy she was having a relationship with looked similar to one the other victim was dating.
The judge said Barker had admitted that the relationships included kissing, cuddling and sexual touching.
He told her: "Nothing that you have ever said to any expert or the police sheds any light on, or provides any understanding of, your motivation for these offences.
“Nor have I nor anyone else seen any flicker of remorse for what you have done.”
Barker showed no emotion as she left the dock to start her sentence, to be served at least initially in a young offenders’ institution.
She had previously admitted two counts of sexual assault and one of fraud. The offences took place between November 23 2009 and May 10 2010.
She received 30-month terms for the sexual assaults and three months for the fraud, the sentences to be concurrent.
The judge said Barker’s guilty pleas were “a complete reversal of the position you had held up until then”, having previously used “persistent lies and denials”.
She had committed repeated sexual assaults - up to 20 on one girl, by pretending to be a boy, and perhaps half that number on the other girl, using two more male disguises.
The fraud count related to her having tried to get compensation for having been assaulted and seriously injured by one of her fictitious characters, Luke Jones.
During the hearing, Barker’s barrister, referred to probation and psychological reports which found she suffers from autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as ADHD.
“Miss Barker struggles to understand the motives and the intentions of others,” she said, telling the court that her client wanted to become “the perfect boy” for each of the victims.

Girls will be boys.

If those victims hadnt been so selfish and had tried to give their “boyfriend” a handjob they would have found out the truth much quicker.

They’re all the same.

A retired semi-professional footballer is suing the Baptist church for £10m, claiming the 19 years he spent as a “fervent evangelist” ruined his chances of playing for Manchester United.

According to the London Evening Standard, 46-year-old Arquimedes Nganga, who currently lives in Forest Hill, London, but used to play for a third division side in his native Portugal, quit the sport at the age of 25, two years after he converted to the Baptist faith. He believes he could have earned £20,000 a week, despite never making more than £200 a month playing semi-professionally.

“I could definitely have had a long career in the Premiership,” Nganga said. “I see many players playing today who I am not inferior to – and perhaps even better than. Most midfielders are either defensive or attacking but I was both. I had something new.”

Nganga has filed papers at the high court, accusing the leaders of the Baptist Union of Great Britain of destroying his social life, causing him “psychological harm” and defrauding him of money through compulsory donations.

The church said it will vigorously contest the claim.

The world is clearly a lesser place for us not having seen this football marvel.

Castlebar man jailed for bigamy in Canada after 19 marriages

Notorious Castlebar native and serial bigamist Oliver Killeen (pictured) has been convicted in Toronto, Canada of bigamy after getting married at least 19 times.

In 2004 he served 18 months for bigamy in London. Most of Killeen’s marriages took place in England in the 1980s and 90s, though he was based in Waterford for a while too.

However in Toronto this week 75-year-old Killeen pleaded guilty to one count of bigamy after admitting he married Barbara Daniels in 1978 whilst still wedded to another woman.

He’s now facing a 90-day spell in prison, which he will serve at weekends only, according to Torstar News.

He once boasted to a Star reporter that he had married 19 women, all but two without bothering to obtain a divorce. “When you’re as good as me, they can’t (keep away),” he said in 2006, standing in a dingy basement apartment doorway in a pair of plaid pajamas. “They say they’re hypnotized. And that is true.”

“I regret the mess I find myself in,” he told Ontario Court Justice John Moore before he was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs.
Ms Daniels married him in 1978 and remembers the next seven years as ‘hell’.

Killeen was verbally abusive and constantly writing bad cheques, she says. Between 1971 and 1977, Killeen amassed 54 false pretense convictions, the court heard Thursday.

But when she finally left him in 1985, she was shocked to discover she could not file for divorce. Killeen was still married to Agnes Cloney since 1974.

“Women are commodities to him,” she says.

Killeen returned to Ireland and in the 1990s established a reputation as a celebrity psychologist, with his own TV programme, a syndicated column, and three radio shows before being found out whilst giving ‘expert’ evidence in court.Testifying as an expert witness in a 2001 trial, a solicitor questioned his non-existent credentials. He was unmasked as a fraud and fled to London, where in 2004 he served 18 months for bigamy.

The Canadian prosecutor said Killeen’s age, his guilty plea and fact he is working were mitigating factors to be considered in sentencing.

A post mortem is to be carried out tomorrow on the body of a man who died in his Wexford home at Christmas but whose body was not found until Sunday night.

The body of a man whose remains lay undiscovered at his home in Wexford town for three months was found by gardaí on Sunday night.

The alert was raised by a passerby on Lower John Street in the centre of the town who noticed a Christmas tree in the window with the lights still on.

It is thought the 62-year-old man died at Christmas.

The body of the man, who is originally from Britain, was found on the floor in one of the bedrooms in an advanced state of decomposition.

The house was still draped in Christmas decorations and the heating was still on.

The man’s identity is not being released until all next-of-kin have been traced and informed.

A post mortem is to be carried out at Waterford Regional Hospital tomorrow.

The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious.

Very sad

Disappointed in Dunph using some poor mans death as an opportunity to try have a pop at Wexford people. I thought he had matured as a poster but obviously not.

Not at all Mac, just pointing out the sad story and that nobody in the town noticed something up.

There’s another thread for this type of story but can’t find it so putting it here. Not so much weird as potentially worrying given the abuse some of us have dished out in the past, albeit none of it was as bad as this must have been.

A SWANSEA UNIVERSITY student who made a number of controversial tweets about the Bolton Wanderers player Fabrice Muamba as he lay critically ill after a cardiac arrest has been sentenced to 56 days in prison over his Twitter posts.

The Guardian reports that police were inundated with complaints over comments made by 21-year-old Liam Stacey on Twitter as Muamba fought for his life.

Stacey was arrested last week and charged with a racially-aggravated public order offence, to which he pleaded guilty. Sky News reports that he has been jailed for 56 days.

Separately, Welsh police told ITV that 15 arrests have been made regarding internet trolling in the past year.

The midfielder collapsed on the pitch during an FA Cup match against Tottenham on St Patrick’s Day. Efforts were made to resuscitate him at the scene before he was rushed to hospital.

Yesterday, Bolton and the London Chest Hospital said in a joint statement that Muamba remains in intensive care, but that he has started to eat again and has gotten out of bed. They said that his condition remains stable and that he is making “encouraging progress in his recovery”.

A number of his Bolton teammates are to visit him later today before they play the rescheduled FA Cup match which was abandoned after Muamba’s collapse.

Apparently one of the Tweets was

The first of his messages began with “LOL [laugh out loud]. Fuck Muamba. He’s dead!!!”

While obviously not a very nice thing to say, hardly jail worthy, was there worse?

+1. Guy’s obviously a dickhead but jailing people for that?

Depends on what the uk legislation is for incitement to hatred I suppose…

It’s probably a crime of strict liability over there, in order to discourage it…
