Wexford GAA 2009

When’s the Intermediate final on?

Was chatting to one of the lads about the Vols and they actually won the Junior title last November or December all right, Gman. It’s my shame that I’m not close to the club scene in Wexford these days but I didn’t recall them getting relegated to begin with, never mind winning Junior last year. Either way, they’re a pack of cunts.

Menapian, there’s not much more to add to the story about the great Paul Murphy. He was referred to as ā€˜fenian’, ā€˜taig’ and what not day in and day out, got fed up with it, did a Shane Supple before Shane Supple did a Shane Supple and came home to fire the magnificent Sarsfields to the prestigous Senior B championship. Lovely x2. Kevin Gore should be on the Wexford football team next year too.

aye, I had thought that the Vols went back down to Junior alright, and a quick look on their website with reports and photos on it celebrating their return to Intermediate. Its not often a team going up gets relegated straight away. And a team like that shouldnt be anyway, they should be challenging for senior, not intermediate promotion.

I’d say there was some celebrations in Wexford with the Senior B cup win. an open top parade and all I presume.

Bandage, is that the same Paul Murphy that hurled with Man City and Wexford Youths? If it is, how come he’s not playing for Kilmore?

Different Paul Murphy. Our Paul is a younger brother of the great Jason ā€˜Spot’ Murphy who was disgracefully dropped by Jason Ryan during the league last Spring. They’re two of at least six Sarsfields players who should be on the Wexford team next year. Kilmore’s Paul Murphy did a cruciate playing for Wexford Youths around a year ago. I don’t know if he’s aiming to make a comeback for them or what.

Cheers chief

I hope Buffers Alley beat Oulart-The Ballagh on Sunday. They’re the lesser of two evils as far as I’m concerned but I’m not overly bothered as long as the violence quotient is high. Can they do it though? They’ll need a huge game from Willie Doran but I’m not sure they can rely on someone who wears pink t-shirts in The Centenary Stores to deliver on county final day.

Heroes, one and all.

SARSFIELDS 1-11 STARLIGHTS 0-13 (AET)[/b]

Wednesday October 07 2009

AFTER PAUL Murphy rescued Sarsfields with an equalising goal with the last kick in normal time, Lee Walker’s winning point at the death left them with a rare Senior success to celebrate in this ā€˜B’ championship decider against their bogey team, Starlights, in St. Patrick’s Park, Enniscorthy, on Saturday last.

It was the club’s first victory in this grade since winning the title outright in 1984 and, while this achievement is a lot less significant, it still meant a great deal to take home the Billy Keilthy Memorial Cup on the same weekend as the men of 25 years ago were honoured on county final day.

Starlights had won the last four meetings between the sides, including a 13-point pasting in mid-August, and they looked in a good position to repeat that trend at half-time when they only trailed by 0-3 to 0-2 after playing against the wind.

Indeed, they created the two best goal chances but James Roice did well to keep out shots from Eamonn Furlong and Daith O’Brien near the end of the first quarter.

Warren Broaders and Jason Russell swapped the first two points, with Ciarn O’Leary and Paul Murphy then extending the Sarsfields lead before Ricky Fox hit back in the 28th minute.

While the impressive Andrew Moore widened the gap on the re-start, Starlights gradually edged clear even though Michael Hanrahan had their main marksman, John Hudson, in a vice-like grip.

Daith O’Brien and Tommy Foley (two, one free) pushed the Enniscorthy men into a 0-5 to 0-4 lead, with Paul Murphy replying in the 44th minute before his side lost their way.

Indeed, points from Foley (two frees), Toms Mahon and substitute Pa Doyle left Starlights with a 0-9 to 0-5 advantage midway through the last quarter.

Paul Murphy gave Sarsfields hope with a free as the seconds ticked away, and the talented Minor was the man of the moment nearly two and a half minutes into added time when he gathered a Warren Broaders handpass and coolly slotted the ball to the net past Lee Murphy.

Referee James Mullally blew for full-time on the kick-out, and Sarsfields led by 1-8 to 0-10 after the first additional period as a Toms Mahon point drew two responses from Ciarn O’Leary’s fist and a Paul Murphy free.

It could have gone either way, with free-takers Tommy Foley and Murphy swapping points before substitute Willie Hudson’s equaliser was followed by the lead score for Starlights from Toms Mahon with two and a half minutes to go.

Sarsfields finished strongly though, and Paul Murphy tapped over another free before Lee Walker turned on to his trusty left boot and fired over a superb winner just when a replay seemed likely.

Rory Murphy, Vice-Chairman of the County Board, presented the cup to David Gannon, and Sarsfields will now have some silverware to show off when national President, Christy Cooney, visits Pirc Charman on Sunday week next to open their new clubhouse.

Willie is a decent sort, he thinks MBB is an awful cunt to have a pint with though.

I’m sure everyone, bar Oulart people, will be shouting on the Alley on Sunday.

Willie Doran=Scumpot

Breaking News from the USA:

I am thrilled to exclusively reveal on TFK that Gavin Buggy is the new Men’s 35 and Over, World Handball Champion. :pint: :pint:

Wonderful news for Wexford, St Mary’s Handball Club, Faythe Harriers Hurling Club and Sarsfields GFC. To hear that the man who coached me to an U-12 40x20 County Wexford Doubles Handball Victory in 1993 has now conquered the world is an extremely emotional moment for me.

Well done Buggy.

Were you the wall?

Just singular?

Best of luck to the magnificent Faythe Harriers team in the Senior B final tomorrow afternoon. Richie Kehoe will be leading from the front and has been racking up the scores from his new full forward position. Stephen Nolan is probably out due to a combination of groin injury and delivering a Kama Lifestyles course this weekend. 'Mon the fooking Harriers.

whats this garbage you speak??..poundage is there a lad called Bent still playing for sarsfields??..he’d be mid 30’s now…

Colin Bent? Good player in his day, just playing a bit of soccer these days if anything.

'Mon the Harriers.

Dinger of an Intermediate Hurling final there, Askamore won 1-16 to 0-17. Congratulations to gavin, gavin 2 and his family.

Really good, competitive game. PJ Nolan was excellent for Askamore, his brother Billy got their goal in the first half. They went from 1-8 to 0-6 up just after half time to 0-14 to 1-8 down.

Peter Atkinson and Mylie Connors got some great scores for Bunclody and Colm Farrell, who broke his leg training for Wexford last Spring, came on at half time and made a big difference.

But Askamore came back again and a couple of their subs and Nolan got crucial scores to seal the victory.

But more importantly, Faythe Harriers are Wexford Senior B Hurling champions after a comfortable 2-15 to 0-15 victory over Rapparees. Ah lovely.

Best game of club hurling in the county for a long time i’d say, really was brilliant stuff. There’ll be porter drank in Kilrush/Askamore tonight i’d say. Pj was class wasnt he bandage? Thought colm was gonna bury that goal towards the end!!

on a much more important note…
