Wexford GAA 2009

Yes, I believe so.

Jersey worn by Wexford Team on Sunday and report from the Wexford People

Wexford 4-21, Kerry 1-10: The Wexford Senior hurlers got the victory that supporters demanded, and expected, when they left Austin Stack Park in Tralee with a comfortable 20-point winning margin over lowly Kerry in Sunday’s Allianz National League Division 2 opener.

Having said that, not many were there ‘in the flesh’ to see a routine success as the Slaneysiders started a campaign in the lower ranks for the first time since 1995-'96.

Given the dreadful conditions elsewhere, the few brave souls who did make the journey were pleasantly surprised by the sunny conditions as the favourites made full use of a very wide pitch to run out easy winners.

Any fear of complacency was knocked out of the Wexford men in the opening quarter as they learned that Kerry weren’t in the mood to be soft touches. Indeed, the home side’s best hurling was witnessed in the early stages as they battled well and only trailed by 0-5 to 0-3 midway through the half despite playing against a strong-enough wind.

They had a stand-out operator in centre-forward and former Munster player Shane Brick who unleashed his vast repertoire of skills in the form of points from a line ball, a free, and play.

Eoin Quigley had given Wexford a very early lead which they never lost, with David Redmond also on target in the opening quarter while team captain Diarmuid Lyng converted three frees.

Wexford’s superior touch, speed and teamwork became more evident as the half wore on, and they were quite comfortable at a break as the lead had been widened to a clear 1-11 to 0-5.

Rory Jacob was responsible for the goal which arose from good inter-passing between the full-forward trio. Stephen Banville ventured outfield to win possession and feed Nicky Kirwan in the corner, and he left club colleague Jacob with an easy task as he sucked the last defender towards him before giving the pass.

Kirwan was also rewarded with a point for his efforts, while energetic midfielder Colm Farrell chipped in with two. Banville also notched a brace before half-time, with the second given by a better-placed linesman after it was initially waved wide by an umpire.

Kerry are still getting acquainted with new manager Mossie Carroll who had a spell in the colours of Colm Bonnar’s Tipperary as well as his native Limerick in the 1980s. And they fell away badly on the re-start as Wexford set about racking up a big score which might prove useful if teams finishing level on points at the end of the group stages.

The second goal was a carbon copy of the first, as Nicky Kirwan worked hard to create the opening for Rory Jacob at the midway stage.

Shortly afterwards Eoin Quigley made one of those trademark surges through a defensive gap and couldn’t be stopped as he planted the third past John Healy.

Nicky Kirwan turned from provider to finisher near the end, getting the finishing touch for the fourth goal after Rory Jacob and substitute Peter Atkinson had featured in the build-up.

A matter of seconds remained when substitute Pdraig Flaherty managed to grab a consolation goal for the home side who will meet a team a little closer to their own level next weekend in the shape of our neighbours, Carlow.

Unselfishness and good movement were two good features of the Wexford attack during that rampant second-half, and hopefully these attributes will continue to be applied when they come up against the stronger teams in the group.

So have Wexford got a new sponsor? Whats that on the shirt?

I will once again, call for us to go with a retro 1956 jersey. Inspiration, taste and class in one.

That jersey and sponsor is septic.

The worst Wexford Under-21 football team in living memory will take on Kildare in Bunclody on Saturday at 2.30 p.m. The team management are up in arms as it was moved from Wexford Park to accommodate the hurling league game against Laois on Sunday. Apparently the pitch can’t take two games at this time of year.

As was mentioned last week, Paul Carty is managing the Under-21s and has chosen a token St Mary’s Maudlintown lad on the team - he has Christy Lane full-back. Last year it was Robbie O’Connor with the Juniors and a few years earlier it was Ian ‘Rocky’ Roche with the Minors, and they’re hardly a club riddled with inter county talent.

Gman mentioned last week that it’s the team that lost to Kilkenny as minors so we’re fairly shit. Paul Gannon is centre-forward and last year he was a sub on the Minor side and got one run against Kilkenny. He’s a good lad, but if the Under-21 team was up to anything then he’d be nowhere near it this year. We’ve no senior panel member on the team either and I think we’re the only county in Ireland with this distinction.

Kilare are trained by Ross Dunphy, formerly of Clonard in Wexford town. He’s an army officer based in the Curragh and would have represented Wexford at all levels. They’re the defending Leinster champions and are managed by Alan Barry of Sarsfields in Newbridge. I’m not sure how many of last year’s side they have involved but they should be way, way too strong for us all the same.

I presume Paddy Power aren’t aware of this ‘local’ knowledge and that’s why Kildare were 1/2 to beat us last week before the game was postponed. They should really be 1/20, never mind 1/2. It’s actually tempting to bet against your own in this case - if I had a spare €1k, I’d seriously consider this easy opportunity of converting it into €1.5k.

In other news, Ned Buggy is up in arms over suggestions that the new Wexford jersey will be stocked in Sportsavers only, and Ger Doyle’s desire to have a Sportsavers outlet in Wexford Park, and their Redmond Square outlet to become a dedicated Wexford GAA store. Hore’s Stores are also very unhappy. Serious unrest should follow as war breaks out amongst Wexford sport retailers.

Is there betting still available on this Bandage ?

I don’t have access to betting sites in work but it should be available still. You might let me know if the price is still the same. Also, don’t lump on until I get a chance to - I don’t want you making the odds go even shorter.

there is a new jersey due for championship … i presume that was jsut a quick fix

Ah right, fair enough then, did look a bit tacked on. Wont get away turning up to play Laois in that sort of slop.

doubt it will get much better. wexford havent had a decent jersey in years. too much arsing around with the ‘style’ of it.

Ger Doyle said in an interview a few weeks ago that they were reverting back to an old style jersey… probably will be a few weeks yet before its out though

Bandage, I was in Ned Buggy’s store last year, and it is the worst shop I’ve ever been in. Dirty, untidy, badly stocked with over priced low quality gear and a staff who clearly couldn’t care less. I was very very surprised. I hadn’t been in the shop for years, and I remember it being great when I was a teenager (I got Ned to sign an old programme for me and a very nice man he was as well).

Someone should contact Scalder and the Wexford Supporters club to get a petition or something happeneing to get a retro jersey happening. Another county will bring one out and then it won’t be an original idea anymore, times a ticking, we should do this now.

Gway would ya. Cian Foley syndrome you have lad.

That’s because his son Gavin runs the shop these days. Gavin’s been known to open around 11.30am so he can get the most of his morning lie in. It’s regularly locked up mid afternoon too, as Gavin tends to be down in the bookies watching the racing.

Naturally, the collars would have to be seriously starched so that they sit up correctly, and look good in Coppers of a Saturday night. A double collar in fact would be the way to go. It would really confuse the rugby crowd and NCC as well.

Thats terrible, he’s obviously a shoe in though for a position on the Wexford County Board with that kind of committment.

hopefully it’ll either be a nice retro one from the 50s or if push comes to shove a re-run of the 98 one

The time Gavin employed Richie Kehoe was a new low for customer service in Wexford. The two lads didn’t give a shit.

Never realised Shep was that sporty:D

Still you live and learn.
