Wexford GAA 2009

[quote=ā€œAppendageā€]Your rationale for your point is stupid, despite the correct conclusion being drawn.

Yea Ger should come home and manage the district teams, thats exactly the point i was making.

Sorry if this went over your head but my statement was based on the assumption that people reading this thread would have some knowledge of what was going on in Wexford Gaa (it being the wexord gaa thread).

Jason stayed home to look after the future of the county football team (his job). He sacrificed a holiday (which he richly deserved) to try and unearth some new talent in the county. He is a driven man and you canā€™t argue with the results.

Ger in contrast flew of off on holidays while the underage convention was on (attending it being his job). Ger has had an annus horribillis, low on results high on controversy, maybe taking a leaf out of Jasonā€™s book wouldnā€™t go astray.

But then again maybe Jason is just a Clown

[quote=ā€œAppendageā€]Okay ā€œladā€.

You made some ridiculous point about Ger staying home to help Jason Ryan with an inter district tourney - you made no mention of the under age thing.

Why should I go to matches? You donā€™t have to go games to have an opinion on them.

Christ, Appendage is truly getting routed by padjo here. Itā€™s difficult to watch, itā€™s so one-sided. Itā€™s like a Wexford vs Kilkenny senior hurling match.

Did you not read the bit where Ryan wasnā€™t able to go on the holiday you gormless clown?

Did anyone ever argue with his results? Heā€™s a great manager.

Now that you mention it; Appendage, I think you have a go at Jason Ryan after the Leinster Final.

And so I did Banadage, I donā€™t agree with his media whore tendancies but he has proven to be an outstanding manager. I was so impressed with the footballers this year that I went to both the Leinster Final and the All Ireland semi final.

Well argued there padjo. I concede to your superiority.

About time

Now that Padjoā€™s finished making a show of Appendage, we can look forward to our first game of the year at the weekend. Itā€™s the footballers up first in an Oā€™Byrne Cup tie against Kildare in Newbridge and I plan to head along.

Basically, itā€™ll be nice to be able to say I was at the first game of the year when weā€™re looking back and celebrating our All-Ireland success next September.

Itā€™s going to be an experimental Wexford side as the likes of Forde, Banville and David Murphy are injured. Redmond Barry is getting married on Friday and will then be off on his travels for 3 months, while Anthony Mastersonā€™s only due back from holidays at the weekend and wonā€™t play. Robert Mageean is back on the panel and Joey Wadding (Wexford Youths FC) was called up after the District tournament. However, both of these lads are injured too.

Colm Bonnar met with the hurlers a couple of times before Christmas and has a provisional panel of 25. Theyā€™ve done some fitness tests and been assigned training programmes and collective training commences next week.

Apparently, thereā€™s going to be a District tournament held over the next 3 weekends in January, along the same lines as the football one, and heā€™ll use that to fill the remaining panel slots.

Rathnureā€™s Antony Oā€™Connell and St Martinā€™s Mossy Waters are among the newcomers in the 25. Heā€™s dropped some of the extended panel members from last year (Simba Berry, Donie Doyle, Johnny Dwyer etc) but the main casualty is PJ Nolan. Maybe heā€™ll return at a later stage.

Two Glynn-Barntown under-age football players face lengthy bans as the result of an alleged assault on a leading referee.

Inter-County referee Sean Whelan was the victim of a vicious attack at the end of the Glynn-Barntown v St Anneā€™s (Rathangan) Wexford Division 1 Minor Football Championship semi-final at Killurin on Sunday last.

Whelan had blown for full-time at the end of a close and exciting game which St Anneā€™s won by the minimum, 1-9 to 2-5, when he was attacked by two Glynn-Barntown players receiving blows to the head which left him stunned and in a state of shock.

A member of an Garda Siochana, Whelan had apparently received several blows to the head, before officials from both clubā€™s intervened, bringing to an end an incident that brought shame to the two players involved, their club and the GAA in the county.

Speaking of his ordeal, Whelan said: 'On the final whistle of what was a close and sporting game, in which just four yellow cards were issued, I was set upon by two Glynn-Barntown players. It came totally out of the blue.

'I received several blows to the head, which left me stunned and shaken. It could have been far worse but for the intervention of officials from both clubā€™s who came to my assistance.

'Given that it was a county semi-final and a local derby involving two sides from the Wexford District, I ensured that I had my own four umpires with me.

ā€˜I gave the game the importance it deserved. But the assault took me totally by surprise. This has no place in the GAA at any level.ā€™

Whelan went on to say: ā€˜I know the identity of both players. I cannot identify them to the media but they will be included in my match report. Itā€™s then up to the Under-Age County Board to decide on appropriate action.ā€™

New Wexford Coiste na nOg Secretary, Marian Doyle, said they (Coiste Board) had spoken with the referee.

ā€˜We are still awaiting his match report. We cannot elaborate further but this is a serious matter. Itā€™s something that cannot be condoned. Whatever action is necessary will be taken.ā€™

The two young lads should be fucked out of the clubā€¦Prick acting of the highest orderā€¦Couldnā€™t tell you if there is a precedent set in GAA for this but I know a lad from my own soccer club who got banned for 3years for assualting a ref a few years agoā€¦

I heard about this the other day and was waiting for Brendan ā€˜Scoopā€™ Furlong to get on the case so he could file reports with RTE and all the daily papers. He never lets us down and I hope he gets well recompensed for his troubles.

Again, Iā€™ve only heard second hand reports of what happened but it appears the ref did indeed get a few smacks despite the fact he didnā€™t make any really controversial decisions. I acknowledge attacking a ref can (almost!) never be condoned but this incident couldnā€™t even be loosly traced back to decisions he made which riled the lads. They were just completely out of order according to what Iā€™ve heard.

Equally disgraceful is a county minor semi-final being played on Sunday, December 28. Fooking hell.

That is a bit of a joke alrightā€¦There should be little or no hurling/football apart from provencial club matches and school/third level from the middle of november til the middle of januaryā€¦How long have these young lads been trainingā€¦Probably since last February/March

In todayā€™s Irish Times aswell:

INTERCOUNTY REFEREE Sen Whelan was the victim of an attack at the end of the Glynn-Barntown/St Anneā€™s (Rathangan) Wexford Division One minor football championship semi-final at Killurin on last Sunday afternoon.

Whelan had blown for full-time at the end of a close and exciting game which St Anneā€™s won by the minimum, 1-9 to 2-5, when he was attacked by two players, receiving blows to the head which left him stunned and in a state of shock.

Whelan, who is a garda, apparently received several blows to the head, before officials from both clubs intervened.

Speaking of his ordeal, Whelan said: "On the final whistle of what was a close and sporting game, in which just four yellow cards were issued, I was set upon by two players. It came totally out of the blue. I received several blows to the head, which left me stunned and shaken.

These two young lads should be banned for at least a year.

I heard recently from a Tipp friend who was mates with the guy who got jail for the hurling incident, that there is no lifetime ban in GAA, max is 5 years. The funny thing about that incident is he was back playing hurling before going to jail.

I know a guy my age who headbutted a ref at U-14 level, he got 2 years and still ended up making Cork Minor panel, talent it seems is always forgiven.

Good news about Fitzhenry staying on for another year. Brendan ā€˜Scoopā€™ Furlong has unleashed a bit of a bombshell in the second paragraph there - I wasnā€™t aware that the rest of the 1996 panel had passed on to their eternal reward. RIP to them all.

From RTE:

Fitzhenry to hurl on with Wexford

Wexford 'keeper Damien Fitzhenry is to extend his inter-county hurling career.

The last surviving member of the 1996 All-Ireland winning side, Fitzhenry has ended speculation about his inter-county future which surfaced at the end of the countyā€™s championship campaign, their All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Waterford.

Manager Colm Bonnar confirmed that the countryā€™s top net-minder will be part of the squad for the 2009 league and championship campaign.

'When I spoke with Damien the matter never arose. We discussed plans for the season and Damien is very much part of those plans. He will be involved in the coming season.

ā€˜Heā€™s an experienced player and a top-class goalie, so itā€™s important to have him around,ā€™ said Bonner.

Bonner and his backroom team will have their first look at the available talent in the county this Saturday afternoon in Bunclody with the holding of two Inter-District games.

Bonner is clearly looking forward to the games: 'Itā€™s a great opportunity for players. We got a tremendous response from the clubs and the players. This is an opportunity for those players to make their way into the senior panel.

ā€˜We have omitted 20 players of last yearā€™s squad from the Inter-District games. Those players will train on Sunday. The Inter-District games will be played over three successive weekends so presents those players with a great opportunity to impress.ā€™

Former inter-county players such as Declan Ruth, Liam Dunne, Billy Byrne, Tom Dempsey, Shane Carley and Larry Oā€™Gorman, along with former Kilkenny player, Michael Cleere will be in charge of the District sides, along with Ed Rowesome, Michael Curley, Diarmuid Berry, Cormac Quinn and John Whelan.

Wexord will have their first official game on Sunday 18 January at home to UCD in the Walsh Cup.

Jeez, I used to think Appendage knew something about GAA but padjo really handed him his arse there.

Appendage hasnā€™t a clue mac, same as bandage, sure the two of them tried to make out that Tom Feeney was by far and away a much a superior full back to Brian Lohanā€¦since that day I havenā€™t taken 1 GAA post either have made seriouslyā€¦

isnt it mad to think that there is at least two 2008 county finals that i know of to still be played off one of which is the u-21 county final ā€¦ this is a joke of the highest order especially seeing at the u-21 intercounty team are out the first weekend of febā€¦ how can management be assured they have picked the best 30 available to themā€¦
