Wexford GAA 2009

Are the rumours about Willie Doran returning to the panel true? He was off travelling but he’s back in the country a good while apparently. He never struck me as the brightest chap when he was in school and returning from Australia to hurl with our no-hopers would tie in with that.

Wexford vs Cork in a hurling challenge in Ballygunner this evening.

cian, HangBlaa, link, Puke - get your reports in early for us Wexford and Cork folk unable to make it.

Can’t make it bandage, my humblest apologies

Cork won handy - where to start !

Wexford played with the wind in the first half, lined out as

Fitz
Trav, roche, o’connell/o’leary?
MJacob, RKehoe, CKenny

Akinson Gizzy

Shore, Doran, Chops
Kenny, Banville, D Redmond

Struggled to recongised most of the cork team, SOH, RC, D OG C, AOH, O’sullivan. Cork were snappy - looked good. AOH needs more hurling but is a big asset, even now.

5 points all after about 15 mins Cork got a goal and pulled a way to half time. Cork started the second half well and it looked bad for wexford. To much short hand passing. In fairness the lads worked hard and played better, more direct passing, in the second half probably broke even.

Lot of subs on in the second half, Harry kehoe, Gahan, RJ and a few more. No sign of Stamp or Rossiter.

Fitz in goal was very good - couple of good saves and good short puck outs
Trav - very good corner back, not up to full speed yet.
Roche - played well, had a tough day on O’Halipin
O’Leary/Oconnell - very week link, played from behind

Mick Jacob - for a guy of his experence he should be doing better -did alright but…
Richie Kehoe - very poor, not a holding man, so much better coming forward.
Kenny - only OK

Atkinson - not bad - very small.
Gizzy - good, lot of wides - a few scores.

Shore - has the size etc and is getting better in a tough area of the field, wexford need him to play.
Doran - Works hard in a hard position, best option we have at the moment, needs more hurling
Chops - off early
Kenny - needs alot of work, can’t start this year.
Banville - has all his limitations, but serves his purpose and is getting better, bit of a leader as well.
Redmond - ok but what is he doing in the corner!

Subs

Rory Jacob - so, so
Harry kehoe - showed well, don’t be afraid to use him.,
Gahan - did very little
Full back - OK very little time
Wing back - OK very little time

Wexford need to be more direct in their passing and cut out the stupid mistakes. Changes needed at cornor back, cornor forward and let Redmond out the field.

Stamp and Rossiter would make some difference but we have be saying that for years now. Eoin is a huge loss as well.

Nice work cookie - much appreciated. AFAIK, neither Stamp nor Rossiter will be back in time for Offaly. Stamp was told to get fit back with the club but came on against Buffers Alley and got injured again. Rossi was apparently angered by management’s stance - not sure what’s going on with him.

Just had a chat with a respected Munster Council official who was at the game tonight. He had a final score of Cork 1-20 Wexford 1-16 after Cork were in front by 1-10 to 0-7 after half time.

David Redmond got a cracking goal for us and was very effective in the corner apparently. Banville got 3 points but missed a gilt-edged goal chance and Gizzy was pretty good too. My source says Richie Kehoe actually did all right after a shocking start at centre back and Brendan O’Leary and Mick Jacob were okay too.

Rory Jacob and Stephen Nolan were dropped and Doc failed a fitness test (ankle injury). Fitzy made a couple of top saves and Paul Carley went off injured at half time.

Cork were back primarily playing the short passing, running game and seemed to tire over the course of the game. The guy Hoggie in the corner was very good and O’hAilpin won a lot of ball but his finishing was erratic.

A decent workout for Wexford and they even broke a few hurleys apparently. Is it true Cork played last night also though?

CORK’S championship preparations continue very much on course as they
comfortably disposed of Wexford in this senior hurling challenge at
Ballygunner yesterday evening.

Cork were dominant throughout, building on an impressive opening 15
minutes, at the end of which they led 1-7 to 0-2. This was in stark
contrast to Wexford, with two points Paul Carley frees.

With Pat Horgan and Jerry O’Connor picking off some fine points, and the
impressive Timmy McCarthy netting a goal, they gave the Model county
defence a real roasting.

O’Connor 0-2 each, B Corry, R Curran(f), N McCarthy, K Murphy, K Cronan,

Wexford: D Lyng 0-5 (1f), D Redmond 1-0, P Kenny, P
Carley (2f), S Banville 0-2 each, A Shore, S Doyle, H Kehoe 0-1 each.

hAilpin, F O’Leary for A Og O hAilpin, T Og Murphy for N McCarthy, P

A typically inaccurate report sent in by some local clown looking to make some easy cash.

Biffos beat clare 2.18 to 1.17 in a challenge game.

only beat clare by 4? did they invade the pitch again after 5 minutes ?

the footballers have some tough challenge games coming up in the next week or so, hopefully the team will get into shape now and be ready for the quarter final.

Wexford park is being kept free this weekend too in preparation for next week, so a lot of games scheduled there have been re arranged for other insignificant locations.

After watching the Wex Cork game on Wenesday night I was feeling a bit depressed…how bad are we …how the hell will we beat offaly…if we beat offaly how bad a beating will we get off Kilkenny or Galway ?

Its enought to make you cry !!

Is there any hope out there …

As if to make things worse, I’ve just heard that not content with having one useless O’Connor from St Anne’s in the squad, Bonnar has now called up Doc’s younger brother, Rich. Oh dear Lord.

Thats a great clip Bandage, yer man did the song withgreat gusto, his love for Wexford hurling an Nicky Rackard was plainly obvious, you wont get things like that in Soccer.Wheres Marys Bar?

think Wexford Footballers are playing Cavan in a challenge on Sunday evening out in Ballyboden…

Is Mary’s Bar just off the Quays near the Stores in the direction of the new Dunnes?

No

No, Mary’s Bar is where Wexford players go to drink when they’re supposed to be on alcohol bans.

Yeah that’s right, its opposite the gate of Rowe Street Church, in Cornmarket. Excellent place to go for a couple covert drinks with a strong republican ambiance also.

It used to be fondly known as the town’s ‘Provo Quarter’ what with The Thomas Moore Tavern just around the corner. Is the TTMT still closed down? Great pub in its day.
