Anyone able to provide some reports on either games? How did Paul Morris go for the hurlers?
I was at the hurling so a few points below, Mac.
It was only in the last ten minutes of each half that we got a string of points to ease ahead of them so there was a fair chunk of the game where they stuck right with us and it wasnāt very impressive in truth. We went from a 0-5/0-4 lead to 0-12/0-6 up at half time and it was still 0-17/0-11 after 28 minutes of the second half before we knocked over a flurry of late points so it probably suggests that we had the fitness edge over them. The concerning thing was that our hurling didnāt look much sharper than them for large parts.
I donāt really want to dwell on negatives but there were quite a few of them. One of their lads knocked over 7 frees and a few other placed balls were missed too. A couple of decisions were dubious enough but we conceded a raft of needless frees and we need to be much more disciplined in the tackle. We lack a bit of physical presence around the park and they were emerging from a lot of rucks and battles with possession - it was apparently quite similar in Carlow last week.
As I said, our hurling wasnāt all that great at times and the striking wasnāt too crisp generally and the first touch was lacking for a few players. I donāt mind that too much at this time of year (though Iād expect us to have been a fair bit sharper than Kildare) but I like to see them picking the right option in possession and displaying some cohesion; however there were the usual incidences of being too slow or greedy to play the right pass, shooting from ambitious angles and just generally getting hooked or blocked when more decisive play was required.
All that said, we did knock over 22 points from play so Iām maybe being a bit harsh. That said, we should be beating Kilare by plenty and it was again a disappointment that we didnāt create clear cut goal chances. Weāll need goals to beat better teams and we should be carving the likes of Kildare apart in truth.
The scorers were:
Lyng 0-4 (0-2F), Shore 0-4, Jacob 0-4, Atkinson 0-3, Farrell 0-3, Kehoe 0-3, Stamp 0-1, Quigley 0-1, Travers 0-1.
- Carton dealt with most high balls comfortably, bar one near the start that he half fumbled.
- The full back line didnāt really impress but Roche was better than the other two.
- The half back line was decent enough, with Stamp the best of them. The other two were sloppy on a couple of occasions.
- Farrell got through some decent work and Harry Kehoe benefited when he was switched to there.
- Gizzy wasnāt as prominent as other games but looked a class above most, while Shore did well overall.
- Atkinson got the first two points for us but faded out of it and Rory barely got a sniff early on but came much more into it after that. Morris didnāt see much ball at all.
Berry, Quigley, Travers and Mahon came on and it was really encouraging to see Quigley back after a year out. Weāll need him if weāre to beat anyone of note this season. We need to beat Laois (away) and Antrim (home) now to qualify for the final and we donāt deserve to be in it if thatās beyond us.
Hon Laois.
Just looking at the football results in our division, Sligo won by 10 points in Enniskillen today to join us on 8 points behind leaders Antrim on 10. I think we now have the same score difference as Sligo after that and we play Antrim at home two weeks today. Iām not sure who Sligo are finishing up with but itās going down to the wire. Antrim should be safe enough as their score difference is well better than anyone else so itās a case of us having to get a better winning margin than Sligo in the last round. Thatās our first win away from home since 2008 and David Murphy just announced on South East Radio that āit would be nice to put some manners on Antrim in Wexford Parkā.
has it not changed that it goes on who you beat rather than scoring difference if points are level? thereby meaning if we beat Antrim, we will finish top regardless of scores?
They (CCCC) probably havenāt decided how it will be decided yet.
Its even more confusing than that Gman, the head to head only applies if two teams are involved
If we beat Antrim and Sligo beat Roscommon then three teams will be on 10 points and the decision reverts to scoring difference
Currently Wexford and Sligo have the exact same scoring difference while Antrim are miles ahead. The last day should be funā¦
Twould be easy enough then no? Both Antrim and Wexford beat Sligo so Antrim and Wexford would go through to the final?
In other words, Antrim donāt need to win really to get to the final.
while we have already beaten sligo, so surely if it is like that, weād be on top should we beat Antrim?
Yeah, thatās what I mean alright but Antrim would still be in the final anyway. Coming first or second doesnāt really matter.
Never that simple with the gaa lads
Harte amazed as āgoalpostsā moved
By Brendan OāBrien
Monday, March 29, 2010
MICKEY HARTE is amazed the GAA has altered its criteria governing relegation and promotion in the National Leagues this year without ensuring that players and managers are fully aware of the consequences.
Unlike previous seasons whereby points difference would be used to separate counties involved in the annual snakes and ladders, if two counties finish on equal points they will be separated on the basis of their head-to-head meetings.
Therefore, were Tyrone to finish level with Monaghan next week, and one of them was to be relegated, it would be the 2008 All-Ireland champions on the basis that they lost the meeting between the pair earlier this month.
However, were Tyrone, Monaghan and Derry ā for example ā to all finish on equal points then their scoring averages would be the determining factor in who goes up and who goes down.
āThat must be a new rule then,ā said a clearly stunned Harte after Saturday nightās victory over Kerry in Omaghās Healy Park which keeps their hopes of avoiding the drop into Division Two alive. So, they tell us when the season is over? Thatās unreal, that we are playing games of that nature and that our season depends on something that nobody has actually told us about."
Was at the hurling too, everything pretty much covered, regarding Paul Morris, he was quiet i thought. The game was very slopppy at times, while we were greedy there was times when we way over done it too, needless passing when ball couldve been pumped up the field or over the bar long before it actually does. Also, Willie Dorans striking is the worst i have ever seen for a county player, i dont think he can hit the ball on the run.
Great to see Eoin Quigley back alright, has an awful amount of work to do though, naturally heās lost some of his speed and has also put on a fair amount of weight, big gut and hole on him. Iām sure heās gunning to get back to top fitness for the end of May though, we badly need him if were to do anything worth talking about this year.
When you say āWeā Gav, could you point out which āweā you are referring to as itās confusing coming from you.
Thanks.
We as in Wexford pikeā¦
I only like to see Kildare do well but Wexford man at heart!
Interesting article in the programme yesterday about Kildare hurlingās links to Wexford. I was emotional reading it.
BREAKING NEWS*
Mattie Forde was chatting to one of the lads out in Gorey last night and told him that he was going back training with the county panel tonight. He wasnāt sure how he was going to get there but heās hoping to be fit enough to start either the very latter stages of the league or the start of the championship.
Not sure if I can claim this as a TFK exclusive but weāll see what happens.
Very good article indeed, Ronan Fagan is a good lad infairness too him.
Ah lovely. If itās true.
Indeed.
Will Keith Rossiter be fit for Laois? We could do with him in the full back line.
Could this be another wind-up from Mac? You damaged your credibility with the fake team last Friday Iām afraid lad.
Iād forgotten about that. This is a rock solid post. The only worry Iād have is that Mattie was speaking shite. It was in Club Malibu in Gorey - hardly a place to be the night before you go back intercounty training.
