Wexford GAA 2010

Molloy, or Foley as the PA man called him, starts for Wexford. Sensational exclusive by the St James contingent.

A Goal from Peter Atkinson has Wexford in front 1-08 to 0-5 pointsā€¦ Cmon the YellaBellies !!!

We were playing with a strong breeze and hurled well enough. We should be another few points ahead but were a bit sloppy in finishing off some chances. They look dogged enough so thereā€™s plenty of hurling left in it. We need our experienced players to lead from the front now, especially the Oulart lads at the back.

That lads elbow is in shite lads, could see the bone out through the side of it. Horrible looking.

whos elbowā€¦

Willie Doranā€™s - really badly dislocated and looked mangled. Wish him all the best obviously. Quigleyā€™s been on since early enough.

Iā€™d like to congratulate legendary Sarsfields and Wexford attacker Billy Dodd ahead of picking up his Wexford District GAA award tonight.

A Wexford win 1-18 to 1-14 ā€¦

Good win that and fully deserved. Probably should have beaten them by more really. Iā€™ll post more after. Gizzy got sent off for a second yellow at the end.

a report on how Mark Molloy played please bandageā€¦ seemed to be doing fairly well from what i could make out from Liam Spratt but SE Radio also werent sure of the score for the last 10 mins

CLG, nobody was really sure of the score due to a couple of tard umpires and an indecisive referee. Some lad came over the tannoy then near the end to announce that Wexford should be docked a point and the guy on the scoreboard duly obliged. Not sure how he was in a position to call it but there you go.

Molloy did pretty well all right. He was very busy and snaffled up a lot of ball around the middle third and seemed fairly fast and his striking was decent enough too. Farrell beside him was very good and knocked over four points from play and we convincingly won the midfield battle.

Other positives were Richie Kehoe and Darren Stamp dominating in the half back line. Kehoe plucked balls from the air one after another in the second half and Bonnar better not leave him out again. Iā€™m not really sure how we ended up conceding 1-14 as our backs were mainly well on top and maybe only Ciaran Kenny was slightly below standard. All the lads in the full back were solid, including Eoin Doyle who started instead of Barry Kenny. Noel Carton was also very assured under the high ball in goal and swept up behind the backs well.

As I said, we got the better of them in midfield and we carved out a fair few chances up front. Shore had the beating of the wing back in the air, especially in the first half, and he got a point from play and won a free or two and was involved in a few other scores. Hopefully Willie Doranā€™s injury isnā€™t too bad but it was encouraging to see Quigley knocking over one of the late points for us and still running strongly.

Gizzy wasnā€™t as prominent in open play today and dropped a couple of frees short but he flighted over two superb line balls. The full forward line scored 1-7 between them. Banvilleā€™s frustrating at times when he doesnā€™t move onto a ball or whatever but he scored three points, including an outrageous one from out by the corner. Rory Jacob also scored three points from play and did well and Atkinson was much better than he was last year - he finished the goal really well, cutting in from the inside left, taking a belt and firing it into the corner.

We still werenā€™t collectively really fluent or crisp in our play but the encouraging thing was the intensity and workrate today. I wasnā€™t at the Carlow game but they apparently were bursting through tackles and emerging with the ball but it was ourselves who were winning those battles and getting the hooks and blocks in today.

It was also good that we came out after half time and put over 4 excellent points against the breeze to stretch ahead by ten. And when they did get their own goal to get the lead down to 4 with 10 minutes to go, we immediately responded and knocked over 2 points straight away. We never looked like losing then and kept them at armā€™s length until the end.

Antrim lost at home to Down today so we really should be beating them to confirm our place in the final. We just need plenty of hurling now over the next few weeks and a good game against Clare should set us up for the championship. Bonnar just mentioned on South East Radio that Willie Doranā€™s break is fairly bad so weā€™ll have to plan without one of the most respected accountants in the game for a while. Weā€™re playing Kilkenny in Wexford Park tomorrow evening at 5pm too.

Wexford Scorers: Lyng 0-5 (0-3 F, 0-2 LB), Farrell 0-4, Atkinson 1-1, Banville 0-3, Jacob 0-3, Shore 0-1, Quigley 0-1.

Weā€™re hurling a senior challenge against Kilkenny at 5pm over in Wexford Park. I think Iā€™ll toddle along ahead of a depressing return to Dublin but I imagine itā€™ll largely be fringe players getting a run out.

trying to decide whether to head to the park myself but think i will hit the road to dublin early insteadā€¦ presumable no one who started yesterday bar mayb carton to give him as much gametime as possible will startā€¦

Might join ya Bandage. Not sure yet, have a couple of tickets here for it anyway.

I woul also like to congratulate Joe Sheehan on his Wexford district award last night and the great Joe Brennan on his Hall of Fame award.

Also a Sars great Jim Crowley passed away last night. By all accounts he was a gent and a great football man, regardless of club allegience. Our club have called off all activities on Tuesday evening as a mark of respect. May he rest in peace.

Give me a shout if youā€™re going Stevie - I have a ticket too.

Sad about Jim Crowley all right - the Sars didnā€™t go to the awards last night once they got word his passing was imminent.

T Watkinson for Shore (68)

Whoā€™s this Watkinson lad Bando? Or be it a typo?

That would have been Tomas Waters unless heā€™s changed his surname to Watkinson by deed poll.

What about the PM?

Iā€™m on the lo-fi version of the site so not accessing PMs at the moment.

Yes, so if we defeat Antrim at home and Sligo beat Roscommon then all three of us will end up on 10 points.

If two teams are tied, then head-to-head record is used; however, if three teams are tied, then scoring difference is used.

We could conceivably beat both these sides but still not get promoted as Antrimā€™s scoring difference is +26 or something and ourselves and Sligo are both +7. Theyā€™ll probably handily beat the already relegated Roscommon.

I donā€™t get why they donā€™t use ā€˜3 way head-to-headā€™ to decide it, i.e. base it on the mini-league of games involving the 3 counties that are tied.

Now, there could have been a case at the outset where each of the three sides won 1 game against the other two but then score difference could be the secondary method of separating them.

Itā€™s seem a bit shit to me.

Appendage, you forgot the football league in 2007 when we needed to beat Meath by more than 7 points to get promoted on the last day and we beat them by exactly 7. We beat Galway in the league hurling quarter final the same day.
