When John A was coming through as an underage player there were other John Delaneyâs hurling at the time too (John Delaney would be a pretty common name in Laois, I know 3 others off the top of my head), I think one other John Delaney may even have been from John Aâs own club, so John A just became known as John A and its stuck ever since.
Wexford football team below from www.wexfordgaa.ie - Iâd be a little bit concerned about a couple of spots in the defence but at least we have players back from injury now so weâve more options to bring on from the bench.
WEXFORD PLAY ANTRIM IN THE FINAL GROUP GAME OF THE ALLIANZ GAA NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE 2010 - WEXFORD PARK - 2.30 PM.
Wexford make one change to their team to play Antrim on Sunday next. Ben Brosnan replaces Pat Naughter at full forward. Redmond Barry moves to centre forward in a swap with CiarĂĄn Lyng who now plays in the corner.
Otherwise the lineout remains the same as the one that had a great result away to Roscommon last time out. The Wexford Management know that a win will give them every chance to making the League Final so best of luck to all concerned.
Wexford (SF v Antrim): 1. Anthony Masterson, 2. Damien Carter, 3. Joey Wadding, 4. Niall Murphy, 5. Brian Malone, 6. David Murphy, 7. Aindreas Doyle, 8. Brendan Doyle, 9. Eric Bradley, 10. CiarĂĄn Deely, 11. Redmond Barry, 12. Adrian Flynn, 13. CiarĂĄn Lyng, 14. Ben Brosnan, 15. Shane Roche.
Weâre playing Cork in a senior hurling challenge in Ballgarvan (I take it thatâs in Cork?!) on Sunday, April 25th too according to the Wexford site. I take it the League Finals are down for the Bank Holiday Sunday, May 2nd then? The official GAA website doesnât have the dates in.
Yeah 2nd May alright-presume itâll be in Thurles again.
Yeah, Iâd imagine so and Wexford-Clare and Cork-Galway could be decent enough fare. Last yearâs final was an epic game of hurling really and the Kilkenny-Tipperary game was good too.
Worryingly sun splashed day in Wexford - the very same as the Meath game in 2007. This promises to be a truly nervewracking day and I fear for Wexfordâs promotion prospects.
was thinking the same myself on the drive down. Strong breeze coming from the town end. Great day for football but not a day for boccy in midfield. Hereâs hoping anyway!
Also, the ref for todays game has a history of screwing us over. michael collins, cork cunt. Very whistle happy. Heâs probably best remembered for sending off Peter Canavan for nothing a few years ago against Armagh I think
Pat naughter starts instead of Deeley and the king is on the bench
Collins typically being a twat for both teams. Wexford leading by a point at half time after playing against the breeze.
Wexford lead 1 6 to 9 points at half time. All points from frees and goal from eric bradley. We have wind in second half. Collins is making a fuck of it altogether but our forwards are playing like its 2004 again. Best attacking players have been Brian Malone and Captain David Murphy.
Sligo lead Roscommon 10 7 so even if we win it probably wont be enough to get through.
Bollix anyway. We beat both Sligo and Antrim and then the coonts decide that points difference rather than head to head counts when three finish level.
Good win today if a very patchy performance, the forwards were poor in general, with virtual no movement at times. Banville and Matty will be a major addition here come championship. Thought David Walshe looked good when he came on and Red was bright in patches. Masterson had a great game in goal, with the exception of one awful missed placed pass in the first half.
All in all a good league run, 5 wins, two losses, should have gone up really. Playing a shadow team against Louth in the first match cost us in the end.
So the retarded scenario has come to pass. Weâve beaten both Antrim and Sligo so it should be ourselves and Antrim going up given they also defeated Sligo. Pretty mixed stuff from us today. We still have a few forwards who donât want to fight for the ball and are carrying a couple of defenders. It was a really weird substitution to replace Malone seeing he was powering forward with the ball. Joey Waddingâs been a great find and had another fine game. David Murphyâs having a very good season and was good again despite a couple of slips. Not sure if we sent a message on that goals were needed but we struck a couple of long distance point attempts late on when we needed a goal or two. As padjo says, team selection in Drogheda cost us when he left Lyng and the other lads whoâd played with their colleges in the OâByrne Cup out. At least weâre going into the championship with some wins under our belt and thereâs time for Forde and others to build up fitness now.
Padjo / Bandage - what did yez think of Naughter today? I honestly donât know how Ryan could look at him for that long. Also found it odd that Red was left in the full forward line for much of the game when heâs usually one of our most creative players.
Just as well we didnât get promoted cos weâre still not Div 2 standard. Forwards still afraid to shoot from scoreable positions and wanting to walk the ball over the bar. Masterson was very good, point blank save and great awareness to come out that time the Antrim forward was left on his own.
Yeah, Masterson was pretty good bar one misplaced clearance and a dodgy kick-out. Did really well on both those occasions you mention, Mac. Weâve a couple of forwards that are ineffective overall at this level all right. Theyâre a bit light and are too easily snuffed out of the game.
Couldnât make it today due to my own match this afternoon, was there any sign of Mattie even coming on? Itâs great to have him available for selection again. How did he look? Carrying a few pounds probably?
Was at a hurling league game to this evening in Wexford. Askamore vs Marshalstown. How in the name of god Marshalstown are a senior team is beyond me, i reckon my own club team in Kildare would beat them and were only intermediate.
He looked sharp enough in the warm up. Had a full tracksuit with them 3/4 length bottoms on him. Did a warm up a good few times and thought he might be thrown on near the end but never seemed like he would. Best to leave him plod away behind closed doors for the next few weeks before heâs unleashed against the Dubs B)
There are at least four players who started yesterday who arenât up to the cut Mac. Walshe, Molloy, Morrissey, Banville and Matty are on the way back so that should improve things no end. My only worry would be how match fit the likes of Morrissey and Molly will be come the championship. Lucky for us we have a handy start against the Dubs B)
Masterson
Walsh, Molloy, Wadding
Malone, Murphy, Murphy
Bradley, Barry
Roche, Lyng, Morrissey
Banville, Forde, Brosnan
Worth a shot maybe? Or start Deeley, move Roche to full forward and leave Mattie as an impact sub.
Red in midfield? Weâd struggle to win primary possession as Bradley is more of a marauding up and down the park midfielder as opposed to someone whoâll claim lots of ball in the air. Iâd only have one of Roche or Brosnan on the team. Not really sure about the defence, would be tempted to play Morrissey half back and Niall Murphy in the corner but then weâd be short of options up front. Forde must play!
