Wexford GAA 2013

Gman was indeed there…

what a game. one that will live long in the memory and will be spoken about in hushed terms and surely in some folklore songs for years and years to come.

or else everyone there will hope to forget about it, be happy neither team lost and move on. some scutter to watch, some awful shooting (Annes with 18 wides?) but plenty of hard workrate. To keep the best young team in the county to just four points is a remarkable achievement for St Annes, but the reigning county champions will surely win out the group now and make it through to the quarter finals. Both teams top the group on 3, with Adamstown, Sars, Starlights on 2 points, and Duffry are surely preparing for intermediate already.

Puke will be happy to hear his beloved Martins beat those cunts from Horeswood too. And easily enough too, which I was very surprised at. A late PJ goal put a small bit of gloss to the 2-15 to 1-9 scoreline. Castletown beat Gusserane, and Shels shocked Kilanerin in the other game. So all teams in this group have won 1 game each, with all winners from first round losing in the second round and vice versa.

Its mad how even it is, with only 2 games played and 11 of 12 teams with a win, and only Fethard and the Annes drawing putting them ahead of others.

 Hon the Martins

anyone hear that there was a co. hurling game on saturday and club men were encouragedto give it priority over their football games?

Yes, I believe that because we’re such a draw our county team was invited to play Limerick in a challenge game in Doon GAA Club. I’m not sure if the muldoons in Doon were celebrating the opening a new pitch or club house or something or whether it was a club anniversary but I heard we lost by 1-21 to 2-15.

Don’t think it was mentioned here but the minor footballers had their first championship win (against a county other than Kilkenny or Wicklow!) in years the other weekend against Carlow. This was a losers’ round game after we narrowly lost in Westmeath after leading for almost the entire game. They next play on Wednesday night at home to Louth.

The minor hurlers start their campaign away to Kilkenny on Saturday - a victory would send them straight to the semi final but a defeat would see them into a quarter final / play off game. I’m in Kilkenny for something else this weekend so might get to drop into Nowlan Park if I can get things organised.

Dramatic comeback victory for the minor footballers, I hear.

1-15 to 2-11.

How are ye set up for the Kilkenny match this weekend. Any chance?

Came from 1-9 to 0-8 down to level at 1-11 to 0-14 before Louth scored a second goal. We immediately responded with a goal of our own and won it with a late point.

Just in the door. Brilliant win. Looked like we’d blown it when they got the second goal with 4 minutes left, but as Bandage said, straight up the field and we scored one of our own. They had some very good inside forwards, which we found hard to handle. In the end we reverted to playing a sweeper in front of them, which started to work as the second half wore on. Wexford probably dominated a possession, but found it a bit harder to get scores. Still Barden, Shanley and the corner forward from the Sarsfields got some excellent points. Is it an open draw for the next match?

Who’s managing and/or coaching the side, padjo?

O’Rourke from Crossabeg, Kerry man originally (ably aided by Sarsfield’s legend Franny Byrne)

Forgot about Franny Byrne’s involvement - he’s with St Mary’s Maudlintown now, as far as I know. Town transfer merry-go-round. Think another Wexford townie Kevin Cogley is doing fitness or something - he’s more renowned for athletics but heard he was assisting in some form or other.

Yeah the Wexford Twitter is re tweeting him all over the shop

Any St Martin’s lads on the team?

yeah Kevin is the physical trainer, and James Mullally and Michael Hughes are selectors too. Jamie Carty of the Martins was the one who kicked the winner, got some excellent scores. him and Barden in a 2 man full forward line dominated towards the end of the second half. Both about 6’4 in height. 2 sars men starting as well Bandage

One of the Sars lads scored a crucial goal for the seniors in the win against Adamstown last Friday night too. Should the Talent Advisory Workgroup get a decent slice of the credit for the improvement in our standing? It’s encouraging to put a couple of wins together at this level.

too early to be singing their praises, most of any of that work wont bear results for some time yet. one of them is involved in a backroom role too with the minors so a good eye is being kept at all age groups. very good to get the win alright. I heard its the first time in 14 years we have beaten anyone other than Carlow Wicklow or KK in minor, think a knowledgeable man told you something similar recently.

Dublin next will be tough, but they needed extra time to beat Louth so no reason to fear them. Out on Sat week.
