Wexford GAA 2013

Yeah a lot of them chose not to go forward to football set up and stay at hurling only. Cant blame them, as it is tough enough going, but the football would have a serious team if they had all players, including others who chose not to go for different reasons
not many Kev. 2 on the first 15, and another in the squad. As mac said, one of the chaps, Donal Shanley, played an AI soccer final on Sunday, Louth on Wednesday and Kilkenny today. And played well in all the games too.

Off that hurling squad, there would be at least 7 of them that would be good enough to be pushing for a spot on the first 24 of the football, but have chosen to only play one of them.

you’re not a fan of the dual option?
Well, I think you have to be choosy possibly. I think the dual option is a bad thing in Cork and no need for it, absolutely no need for it at 21, arguably at Minor too. The Leaving Cert is one reason, but they are 2 distinctly different sports and to excel in either these days you have to concentrate in one IMO. as well as that the speed of the games, the training involved etc not to mention club games means you need structured and regular recovery. You won’t get all that playing both.

In Cork if you look at all the competitive Senior and Intermediate clubs in hurling none of them are competitive in both unless they have drastically different panels. A good example of this is Sarsfields Hurling/ Glanmire Football. The hurling is obviously flying but most of the dual lads prioritized or picked hurling. Even though they should be better Glanmire are now bottom if Div 4 winless in football and probably going down Junior. A disgrace for the pick they have, but they were In premier Intermediate finals a few years ago and Div 2 when they had Cussen, the Ryans, Murphy’s etc. SARS were competitive but just a little bit back. Hurling is king down there so as soon as these boys realized the football was a hindrance they jacked it in, or stopped playing league etc. that has become the template in Cork. Other clubs like St. Nicks (Glen in hurling) gone to Div 3 in football, Na Piarsaigh gone Div 3 in football and Intermediate football, St. Vincent’s gone Junior in hurling, Senior in football. St. Michaels have no Blackrock hurlers now. St. Finbarrs have one dual player I think at Senior.

I proposed a few years ago that my club take a similar path. Players choose a code and then, for variation or to help the club they play with the 2nd team of the opposite code. I was laughed at, and it was shot down, but it will happen.

If I were to take a club team now if I went home I’d only coach a one sport club or on the acceptance that guys follow my suggestion above. It’s stupid having coaches an players putting in massive work only for teams to be riddled with avoidable injuries and fatigue when it really matters.

It’s selfish old fellas and coaches making good athletes an players play all the time. My club play the first roun of Premier today, this a perfect example. We are a dual club, hurling is on the rise and the football is always strong. Anyway despite hurling champion being really 2-3 months away yet they have played 7 games already. Some of those games pushed some football matches to last week. Last week then our 1st team played a challenge game Tuesday, a league game Friday and a league game Sunday morning. That’s the kind I stupid coaching, administrating an shit that goes in with dual clubs and its abuse of players. If course we lost our free taker in the Sunday. Cumulative neural fatigue. i think it’s going to become a buzz phrase in the near future, but when all the other idiots run guys into the ground I’m telling you here and now what it is. Now I accept last week and the 3 games our lads played would be stupid at any time, in any code, at any club. They are playing Kinsale, who more or less don’t play hurling.

In general though, it’s quite counter productive. In years gone by the slower game meant the most athletic players could easily play both codes and your skills didn’t need to be as sharp. That’s all changed.

Bottom line, if you want to excel at either, concentrate in that. At Minir, certain athletic freaks can because if size and speed be a help to a team that nobody else can match. But certainly after that they will h e to pick something to be the best they can be.

Problem with Minors choosing the one code is that with the development system in places everywhere now its a waste of resources to train lads at U-14 etc when a lot of them are going to play another code when they are older. So really you’d need lads to choose one code or the other at u-14…which is retarded.

I see Laois beat Wexford in a challenge yesterday. What sort of outfit had Wexford out?

I agree, no way would I ask a 14 year old to pick a sport. But at 17-18 if you want to be elite you have to concentrate on one sport. History and Scientific studies bear this out.

While your point on resources is very valid, I don’t think it’s actually relevant in the sense that when you have them at 14 you are not making any decisions, you just develop them as best you can. People love the glory and hero status of the dual player, but the facts are, it’s unfair on the player and counter productive.

The 17-20 region is absolutely vital in improving a good player into a real good player and is one of the last chances in a males life of real developmental of particular Motor skills. Miss out, or not be fresh and recovered for high level training is detrimental to the players.

Also injury is a factor, you have mentioned Turenne that alot if the Cork Minors injuries are to dual players. I have very little doubt that the constant injuries being picked up by Cadogan, Ciaran Sheehan and Colm O’ Neill are due to their incredible amount of games played from 17-21. Sheehan played Intermediate hurling at 15. That’s 7 years adult club hurling he has had already. Not to mind being a dual minor for 2 years and a dual 21 for 3. O’Neill is very similar.

Something interesting on McDonald (well I thought it was): he takes frees off his right hand side but buried the penalty off his left. He missed 3 frees and a 65 yesterday so could have had an even bigger tally. The first 2 frees were from the sideline about 30 yards out so not easy in fairness.

Kilkenny actually gave him fuck all space and he was getting dry humped by 2 or 3 of them any time he got on the ball, or in some cases as he approached the ball. Still, he’s that good that he still bagged 3-4 (2-2 from play).

Obviously we need a better spread of scorers though. We’ll have the Foley lad from the Rapps back soon (broken hand) to strengthen the midfield / half forward area too.

Eviston of Crossabeg-Ballymurn is a first cousin of Tipperary’s Noel McGrath.

MBB, was Laois-Wexford yesterday evening? I saw Liam Dunne in Nowlan Park at the minor and a few of the senior squad too. Don’t know anything about the challenge.

It was in Dicksboro afterwards, only heard this morning, only for that I would have given you a heads up pal.

That is interesting

Tony Kelly hit frees against Dublin last year off both sides, it was the first time I had seen that in an inter-county match

Is McDonald on the age or what Bandage. This his second year?

Unfortunately KK will probably still go on and win Leinster, the Dubs are supposed to be fairly young and building for next year.

This is his third year playing minor and I reckon he’s on the age.

Kilkenny will no doubt learn from yesterday. They lost yer man Kevin Kenny to a hamstring injury early on. He was impressive for Dicksboro in the county senior final last year apparently so would be a main player at this level.

Via The Wexford People: Liam Dunne has confirmed that Lyng and Guiney won’t be part of the squad this season.

Is it an injury with Guiney or what’s his story?

He had a few nagging injuries earlier in the year and was tied up with UCD’s Fitzgibbon Cup campaign too. I think he fell off a gate and cut his head badly also. But he’s meant to be back hurling with Rathnure now.

From reading between the lines, it seems Dunne’s lost patience with players who haven’t been willing to give the required commitment for one reason or another.

Mind if I join in? This looks like a great forum!

Under normal circumstances, the reply to this questions would be a short, sharp Fuck Off. However, I’m sure given your username, Bandage will make an exception. Welcome head.

Any of the Dublin based TFK Wexford Tifosi heading to the minor football tomorrow?

Yeah sure, welcome along. New members have to post a picture of themselves in their club jersey though so go ahead whenever you’re ready.

Could be, will play it by ear though, You heading up?

I thought it was in Wexford for some reason. I’ll just have to wait for the next round to see them.

will be there alright. Time and venue change for it too, DCU at 3pm
