Wexford GAA 2014

The senior footballers were victorious in their first game of the year in New Ross earlier with Kevin O’Grady scoring both goals.

O’Byrne Cup: Wexford 2-13 Laois 0-11 (FT).

Any predictions for the year ahead for our teams across all codes?

Wexford to be relegated in football and not to be promoted in hurling in the league.

We need to unearth some forward talent. We could have one off the best midfields in the country.

Severely lacking on forward talent, are only real threat of late has been Lyng.

Larry Coleman of St Martin’s has been appointed Wexford minor hurling manager.

I reckon we win Leinster in football, lose the

Well decent sized, aggressive forward talent.

I agree with your mid field statement. Michael o’regan is supposed to be playing football this year was a serious player at midfield when the u21s won leinster. Would like to see him and daithi tried out there.

I wouldnt have too much confidence in the back line. David Murphy, despite his limitations, will be a big loss as he was the only guy who would hit guys running through the centre. I dont think any of the current defenders, whilst all good athletes, have that nastiness or aggression/toughness in them. Our forward line generally hold their own.

What’s the craic with Eric Bradley now? Is he completely gone or any chance he’ll be back?

James breen is coming back into the fold, he was centre back for the U21s the year they won it? was hit with a bad hip injury. Iwas informed that he did well at the weekend albeit against Laois.

Speaking from personal exeperience Molloy is an aggressive dirty cunt, Malone can possibly be a bit too nice and furlong was the find of last year.

I think 3 of our defence lined out for leinster in the interpro last year.

Has Masterson returned to the panel yet?

That man must be 32 if not 33 at this stage care to clarify @Gman ?

He’ll be 33 this year and is in Sydney. Not much hope there I reckon

Wexford badly need to get more St Martin’s men involved with the senior hurlers. They should get Mick Reade back as kitman to begin with

This could be furlongs 3rd or 4th year on the panel, a really good defender, felt he never got a chance under ryan when on the panel, could never understand how guys like rob tierney and conor carthy were getting games ahead of him.

Bad loss to UCD the other night. Lots of players rested.

One thing that’s irking me is there doesnt seem to be much/any experimentation. Molloy has played Full bakc in the last 2 games, would it not be worth looking for another fella to play that position also, and being confident in having a back up?

What way does the O’Byrne cup work this year. I know there’s 4 teams per groups but who progresses or how many more guaranteed games is there?

top of each group goes to semi final*

  • i presume.

Re: Bord na Mona O Byrne Cup SF 2014

A Chara,

The attached schedule contains the Tables after Round II of the Bord na Mona O Byrne Cup SF 2014.

Also attached is the list of Regulations for the Competition, including Qualification for Semi Finals, ties etc.

The Draw for the Semi Finals (19.1.2014) is as follows:-

  1. Winner Group A v Winner Group B
  2. Winner Group C v Winner Group D

(First named team has HOME VENUE, except in the case of a College qualifying)

The Winners of Semi Final 1 have HOME VENUE in the Final (26.1.2014)

Le meas,

Micheal O Dubhshlaine.
Encl.

On Sunday in O’Byrne Cup Group A IF - Laois win, Offaly win = Laois through; UCD win, Offaly win = Offaly through

IF UCD win, Wexford win = UCD through; Laois win, Wexford win = Wexford through

IF three or four teams level - scoring difference into Sunday - UCD +8, Wexford -1, Laois -2, Offaly -5

What happened the O’Byrne shield or was that scrapped now that each team had 3 guaranteed games?

While 3 guaranteed games is good, is there much point in running them off in the space of 7 days at this time of year?

I didn’t know Shane Roche played underage soccer with Ireland in goal. The Wexford People report that Masterson is currently unable to give the required commitment but I’m not sure if that means he’ll be absent for the entire season or not.

Colm Kehoe (is that his surname?) seemed to impress against Laois - the Cloughbawn lad off last year’s Under 21 team.

I think it’ll be a tough slog this year having lost important/experienced players through retirement. On the other hand, if the football team struggle then it will allow us to focus all our resources on hurling. We’re well capable of winning a senior All Ireland with the players at our disposal.

If only the greatest player ever in the history of any sport Lee Chin were available that would solve every problem.

We beat Offaly earlier by 3 points but miss a semi final on scoring difference.
