Wexford GAA 2014

Another awful effort from this freak.

conditions were rotten for most of the game, the sod was heavy and the rain was a grade 3 Angela’s Ashes heavy drizzle

  • 10 first half wides when we were on top;
  • Some were worse than others but Guiney even pulled a 21-yard free wide of the near post from just to the left of the goal;
  • Conditions. Rain and heavy pitch made for some tight exchanges at different stages;
  • Execution was a bit off but we clicked nicely for the goals and that pointed to better days ahead;
  • To continue the cliche ridden nature of this post, we’re now an athletic, top of the ground team and we’ll deliver on our promise in the summer.

It’s also time for our county chairman to again speak out in the national press. On this occasion, it should be to demand that Wexford are refereed to the same standards as other teams. Flaking a few lads in the head last year combined with that cunt Michael Duignan’s whining and hyperbole on national TV is having a material impact on or matches since.

It’s also clear that we would have won an All Ireland U21 hurling championship last season had Diarmuid O’Keeffe been selected for the semi-final against Antrim on his return from America.

We never seem to do well in Double Headers.

It seems there are signs of life from the Hurling Camp, with good players to come back.

The footballers cannot seem to get any luck, does any one have a report on the game?

Ye are in a real scrap to avoid relegation in the football.

What’s your remaining fixtures ?

The footballers weren’t unlucky and the loss was their own fault. Giving up a 7-point second half lead was utterly ridiculous. It only reinforced that I was correct to stop supporting them.

Is it a double header in Wexford Park next weekend? It’s meant to be ready to reopen anyway.

A loss mourned by the panel, the co. board and the GAA community at large.

Care to shed any light on what happened?

Sligo FErmanagh and Longford…

The pressure is well and truly on.

With the greatest of respect to Offaly, Laois & Antrim, Division 1B was always going to be a 3 way shoot out for promotion between Cork, Wexford & Limerick. Doesn’t seem particularly fair that Cork have both Wexford & Limerick at home whereas Wexford have to travel to both Cork & Limerick. Surely Wexford should have been scheduled to play Cork in Wexford Park?

you’d have thought. or that for something like the 3 rd year running we got 2 home games and 3 away ones. Cork managed to have Limerick Wexford and Offaly all at home.

Wexford started to flag, cough up the ball, struggle to retain possession, give away frees etc. Fitness? Limerick chipped away with a few points and got it back to two in injury time.

They’d brought on this absolute legend called Eoin Hanrahan (who everyone was calling Boris) and he started making things happen. Playing well. Wrestling. Running around like a mad man. He was great to watch. Anyway, Boris floated a free into the danger area and Daithi Waters (excellent as always :clap:) rose majestically, caught it on the edge of the square, burrowed his way out to the side and hoofed it into the stand.

Game over, surely? Not a bit of it. Limerick took the sideline short and another sub spun his marker out wide near the end line and absolutely fizzed a cross (just above head height) right across the square. A Wexford defender seemed to parry it and the ball hung in the air a bit and Ian Ryan (I think) fisted it into the net. It came out off the back stanchion (spelling?) and Wexford scrambled the ball clear. Neither umpire signalled for a goal but the referee went in and consulted with them and the goal was rightly awarded.

Boris looked like the type of guy who can bring the masses back supporting Limerick football.

Fanning;
Ryan, O’Hanlon, B Kenny;
Rossiter, Chin, C Kenny;
Devereux, Martin;
O’Keeffe, Tomkins, H Kehoe;
Jacob, Moore, McGovern.

Liam Ryan, Ciaran Kenny and Rory Jacob in for Ian Byrne, Paul Morris and Jack Guiney.

A few other players move forward a line: Rossiter from corner to wing back with last week’s wing backs the new midfield pairing and the two midfielders in Limerick listed as the wing forwards.

Team named early in the week. Wouldn’t be surprised if a different lineup turns out on Sunday.

There’s a “My Club” article/interview with Lee Chin on GAA.ie. Please excuse the writer’s spelling mistakes when talking about the club’s home ground and other notable players.

Was talking to my brother last night, just cant see the footballers doing anything significant in the next couple years, on the other hand I could see the hurlers getting to a Leinster final or possibly better

What would that spud know…

need a bit of momentum*

*not the free fall we are currently in

No Laois team named yet, but that doesn’t mean much as Cheddar has named the same 15 for each league game and made changes to the starting line up then prior to throw in. Its believed, given the schedule of games coming up with the league play off and Leinster Round Robin and with 1B status secured, that he will give a run out to some of the fringe panel members to take a look at them and resting some of the younger players who’ve seen a lot of game time in recent weeks.

But then again this is Cheddar so he could really do anything.

I find it annoying that the Wexford GAA team press releases are regularly inaccurate. It’s Liam Ryan, Ciaran Kenny and Rory Jacob in for Byrne, Morris and Guiney this weekend but they mention Gary Moore being drafted in (even though he started the last 2 games). It’s picked up then by newspapers such as The Irish Times today. It’s basically ruined my weekend.

Gary Moore is getting around this week.

I only saw this post now. Wexford thought the game was won and just threw on subs for the sake of it. I dont know why they took off Brosnan, that certainly helped us.

They also underestimated the powers of Big John to drag a whole team along with him, he had come on at half time, comfortably lasted the 35 minutes and was still driving Limerick on at the very end.

We have a few like Boris, Seamus O’Carroll would be a similar in the “running around like a madman” way - he hit a good point plus made the run and cross for the winning goal.

And finally, kudos to Runt’s clubmate Danny Neville who also made an impression when he came on in the forwards.
