Wexford GAA 2015
Chaps, itā€™s time we got some match reports in.

Hereā€™s a brief effort from Brendan Furlong to get us started:
http://m.wexfordpeople.ie/sport/gaa/wexford-beat-antrim-by-a-point-30994211.html

Iā€™m a bit concerned about our defensive record. 4 goals conceded against Laois in The Walsh Cup and 2-20 is a huge tally to concede at home to Antrim.

I thought Oā€™Hanlon might be tried at centre back but heā€™ll probably return at full back following Watersā€™ dismissal today.

Offaly away next Sunday and I think weā€™ve lost our last two meetings up there (Leinster championship in 2012 and NHL in 2013).
Fairly accurate quotes from Brendan there Iā€™d say. Iā€™ve often heard Dunne say ā€˜oneā€™ or ā€˜for itā€™.

Every article where Brendan throws in manager or player quotes comes with a ā€œforā€ or two. Nobody uses it except Brendan.

Iā€™d imagine Dunne and co were very relieved to win for Antrim battled very hard.

#I thought it was still a good win considering a man was sent off

FAO of Wexford chaps, anyone know what happened to wexfordsupporters.com? Seems to have passed away and gone to internet heaven.

My alma mater St Peterā€™s have qualified for the Leinster Senior Colleges ā€œAā€ final for the first time since 2004. Iā€™m feeling @downyourthroats levels of happiness about this feat.

2 personnel changes for Wexford and a few positional changes too. Liam Ryan and Matthew Oā€™Hanlon come in for Mossy Waters and Kevin Foley.

Fanning,
Ryan, Oā€™Hanlon, Kenny,
P Foley, Chin, Moore,
Redmond, Sinnott,
Byrne, Waters, Oā€™Keeffe,
Morris, Guiney, McGovern.

Moore from corner back to wing back. Redmond from wing back to midfield. Morris from midfield to corner forward. A like for like replacement at full back with a player returning from suspension coming in for Waters whoā€™s serving a 1-game ban.

Iā€™d say whoever was paying for the hosting of it couldnt be arsed with it anymore. more hassle than it was worth as feck all posted there anymore.

Be great if Good Counsel could beat Kierans and play Peters in that final. There was some tasty clashed between both in the 90ā€™s and not much rivalry since. Used to be great craic with both sets of fans set up either side of the halfway line and chanting abuse at each other. Counsel are playing Edenderry in the football final in a couple of weeks.

Good news for Wexford today with UCD getting beaten in the Fitzgibbon Cup thus freeing up Conroy, Oā€™Hanlon, Devitt, Sinnott and others possibly.

Was Andrew Shore not on that team. I believe he walked past UCD once.

Very droll, mate.

Subs for Sunday: 16. Breen, 17. R Kehoe, 18. H Kehoe, 19. K Foley, 20. Devitt, 21. Conroy, 22. Devereux, 23. Kelly, 24. Tomkins, 25. Martin, 26. Doran.

Ɖanna Martin will start in place of Garrett Sinnott according to informed sources in Tullamore.

We lead 1-8 to 0-7 at half time with a strong wind at our backs for the 2nd half

HT: Wexford 1-8 Offaly 0-7.

Played against a fairly fresh breeze so nice lead to hold.

Redmond dominant in midfield and Chin controlling the half back line. Full back line has also been fairly solid. Ian Byrne has been busy in the middle third and they canā€™t cope with McGovernā€™s pace and skill. Guiney scored the goal when McGovern broke the ball through to him and he forced his way past a tackle before his shot crept over the line after a partial block by the keeper.

Weā€™ve created 3 or 4 other goal chances through our running game, support play and drawing defenders. Redmond and Byrne forced two smart saves from the keeper and Paudie Foley botched the final hand pass to McGovern after playing a series of short passes all the way upfield.

A little bit of sloppiness in our play and conditions are tough with the wind, soft pitch and intermittent rain but we should be able to build on that in the second half.

Paul Morris went off injured early on and was replaced by Kevin Foley.

First half scorers: Guiney 1-2 (0-2 F), McGovern 0-3, Redmond 0-2, Waters 0-1.

FT: Wexford 2-15 Offaly 0-12.

Pretty poor second half display. They went down to 14 men straight after half time. Cillian Kiely, the young chap who was brilliant for Kilmormac-Killoughey, had a rush of blood to the head. Chased Kevin Foley back into defence, gave away a free for clipping him across the arm when trying to flick the ball away but then digged him in the ribs with the butt of the hurl after the ref blew for the initial free.

Our half forward line went out of it. Waters possibly could have received a second yellow card before being withdrawn. Oā€™Keeffe didnā€™t have one of his better games and Guineyā€™s day didnā€™t improve when he was moved to wing forward.

They were still hanging around at 1-12 to 0-12 when two of our best three players put the game to bed. Redmond knocked over his fourth point from midfield and McGovern struck over a brace to bring his tally to five. Podge Doran put the gloss on the scoreline with a well finished goal in the last minute.

Our shooting woes struck again in the second half. We had a mixture of ā€œwhy the fuck are you choosing to shoot from there?ā€ and ā€œhow the fuck did you miss that?ā€ wides. Around 17 in total and 5 in 5 minutes with about 10 minutes to go when Offaly tired and we started to get some easier possession. Thankfully McGovern and Redmond intervened to avert a close run finish.

Liam Ryan was spare man when they went down to 15 and did well. Ciaran Kenny did a decent job on Dooley and Currams wasnā€™t a factor at either wing forward on Foley or when he moved onto Oā€™Hanlon.

We need to cut out sloppy free concessions. Eoin Moore gave away a handful today despite hurling a lot of ball otherwise. Kenny blocked Dooley down smartly at one stage and then gave a free away for a third man tackle when Fanning was collecting the ball. Little things like that need to be eradicated.

McGovern is top class though. He was the pick of our players with Redmond and Chin.

Scorers: Guiney 1-3 (0-3 F), McGovern 0-5, Redmond 0-4, Byrne, Waters, K Foley 0-1 each, Doran 1-0.

Wexford will take serious stopping this year.

Is it the battle of the big guns next, Wexford v Limerick?

Wexfords first victory against offaly in offaly for 42 years apparently

Wexford must be favourites for promotion.

Not far off it anyway. Should be a titanic struggle.

Wexford in driving seat right now
