Wexford GAA 2015

I remember as a chap my aul lad would get me to mark up the program with point scorers and wides and stuff, and used always be an issue with space to keep tally of Wexford wides. A problem for years, as far as I can remember of that decent team from the early 90s that didn’t fulfill full potential.

It’s probably an issue in both codes across the country, but scoring (not shooting) practice seems to be a long way down the list for coaches.

[QUOTE=“Appendage, post: 1114959, member: 11”]Of the footballers? No he won’t be under pressure for the following reasons:

Wexford’s best footballer defected to the hurlers;
The hurlers are moderately competitive again;
One of his best forwards is in America;
There’s a hard core football following in the county but hurling is the main event.

He’d have a clear run except for that utter fuckology* about the media nights and so on. Upsetting Brendan Furlong is a bad start.

Genuine question. If both were going well, would the footballers attract bigger support?

The reason I ask is that I went to Wexford Park for a league game in 2013. Wexford were playing Roscommon in the first game and there was a fair crowd in the ground when I arrived about 20 mins into the first half. By the time the hurling started, a fair share of them had fucked off and left which I found bizarre seeing as they had paid in to watch 2 games. At the time, Wexford footballers were in a far better place than they are now with the opposite being the case with the hurlers.

Last year in the Gaelic Grounds, the place virtually emptied after the hurling was over.

Not at all. Even at that time, hurling support was still way more than football. No one really gives a fuck about football. The crowd was only in that time because it was raining in advance of the hurling.

Ok, but it was dry and sunny that same day in 2013…

Ah right, we played roscommon in championship when we played limerick too. Not sure when you are talking about tho, we were in division 2 in 2013 and we played them away last year

Same as us really.

I see we missed a lot of frees yesterday again. Ian Byrne has been accurate on them but he was taken off at half time and Guiney and O’Keeffe missed a number of them between them. I thought our forwards were stronger than our defensive options but we’ve only scored 0-16 and 0-14 in successive games. O’Hanlon and Ryan were outstanding in defence yesterday by all accounts. Interesting that we went with Daithi Waters in midfield too.

Still lots of things to figure out in terms of personnel. Not just who’ll make the championship starting team itself but where exactly certain starters will line out. O’Hanlon full back or centre back? Chin centre back or midfield?

Plenty of time to look at combinations, albeit club championship action in both codes will be taking place.

Plenty of people contacting Alan Corcoran this morning complaining about Ian Byrne’s substitution.Wasn’t at the game so maybe he was injured but Dunne does seem to whip him off at the first sign of trouble while others are given the benefit of the doubt.He is a very good striker of long range frees and sounds like thats what was needed yesterday.

Did Alan Corcoran have the answer? I couldn’t make the game yesterday but it seemed crazy to take Byrne off.

Is contacting Alan Corcoran what people who don’t have the internet do? I’ve always (I haven’t) been fascinated by the tards that contact a local radio show to vent about the hurling/football team.

Exactly.Prefer dyslexic keyboard warriors like those who frequent hoganstand.com myself!

Eh, I think you’ve done that yourself. Hypocrite.

Brendan Furlong has a nice dig at the footballers in this week’s People paper complaining how it’s hard to justify investing so much money in the team when you get such a heartless display.Apparently the footballers have been meeting up for prematch meals in the golf club,getting a bus to Wexford park before returning to the golf club by bus for the post match meal.

You lose all credibility when you use words like ‘Apparently’. That does sound excessive in fairness.

Poor choice of language on my behalf so. Brendan stated such a plan was in place for home fixtures so we can take it as gospel.

We’re back boys, the time is coming. Going for the first Leinster minor title tomorrow since 1985. Dont mind that Kilkenny dont participate in it though, lets just call ourselves minor champions anyway if we win.

“Wexford Minor Hurlers aiming for 1st Leinster tittle since 1985 when they take on Offaly tomorrow in Innovate Wexford Pk in the Leinster Minor Hurling League FINAL. Looking for as much support as possible admission €5”

why we cant just announce the game, and leave it at that. always having to hype up the underage teams, desperately wanting Leinster titles. was the same a couple of years back, the U16 hurlers at the time won some league shield, and there was endless tweets and facebook and website photos of the event. all this does is keep putting the pressure on the players that they dont deserve.

For fuck sake gman. We’re going for our first Leinster title since 1985. Get excited.

Could it be possible they’re just trying to drum up a bit of support for a minor team?

Although I do agree your social media people are plain odd.

its been building for a while now up to this game. lots of facebook and twitter shite, as if it is something to be crowing about. Its a mickey mouse league tournament that teams use to find out players who arent playing colleges hurling. some perspective wouldnt go amiss, as well as not hyping up young over excited lads like @Appendage who are only bulling to have the next bandwagon to hop on. The problem with these bandwagons in Wexford, is that the fall makes a fuck of things more often than not, and where you would have a couple of decent lads to pick up from minor teams, it either goes to their head, or they dont take the pressure unduly put on them since they were 14 and being hyped as the next best thing. You should have a gander at the Wexford hoganstand page to get a glimpse of the types I mean. I’d prefer to let minors develop at their own pace and not have the pressures put on them of being the first team to win Leinster since 1985. Wait until the talent academy summer blitzes go on, and you’ll see the teams winning a few blitz games being hailed as Leinster champions and photos splashed everywhere. As for the promo, I’d have been as happy if they just said, “Leinster League Final, come see this years minors in their last outing before their championship game”. No need for the 1985 reference at all, as if it is someway relevant. Maybe I’m just a dour aul cunt.

Nah, you’re spot on in every element of that tbf.
