Wexford GAA 2015

Anyone with a passing knowledge of Wexford GAA knows he’s injured.

It’s been highlighted on this thread.

Any particular reason you’re not following the footballers this year?

No particular reason

Anyone hear that Guiney has been dropped from the panel?

Dunne finally clearing out the mollockers!

Haven’t heard.

Poor enough fare in mullingar. 2 weak enough sides and little intensity. Some heat tho. 1 point down, so all to play for.

Lovely. Match report later, please. I like Big David Power and I think he’ll get us back up into the top 16 in the next 2 years.

Dropped on Friday for being a bold boy.

Went from being 2 points up with 10 mins left to losing by 6 I think. Spratt was fierce dejected. Ronan Fagan nearly burst a blood vessel at our stupidity with the 1-1 we gave away straight after going 2 points.

Guiney dropped off the panel for disciplinary reasons.Didn’t like been slagged off in the papers by Dunne.Big call by Dunne. JJ Doyle must be watching with interest!!!

That’s it in a nutshell. Lost by 8 or 9 for a finish I thought. Up by 2,had slight momentum and 2 awful passes cost us 1-1 in the space of a minute. All the momentum changed, and Westmeath kicked on.

18 degrees in the midlands today mate. I think thats mild

You’ve an awful horn for Jj. It’s Dunne’s job till the end of 2016 campaign if he wants it.

The same JJ who engineered the U21 semi final defeat against Antrim?

As opposed to Liam Dunne who saw us thrashed by over 20 pts. against an Average Limerick side last year and who when asked before the game by South East radio what the focus was in the week before the match responded by saying “Tickets” He was totally caught up in ticket fever before the Limerick match.
At least JJ a) Got us to an All Ireland final last year where we lost but weren’t disgraced
b) Managed a win in Semple stadium against a highly rated Galway side
Its hardly his fault that most of the U21 went to a twenty first party the week of the Antrim game in 2013!!!
Look it I like Dunne and admire him in terms of what he has done these last few years but he has had plenty of talent to work with. I just don’t think he is the man to bring Wexford on to the next level.Any major game so far be it Dublin in 2013& 2014,Limerick last year, this years match in the league against Waterford he doesn’t seem to have sufficient gameplans which are needed at this level. Basically I don’t think he is smart enough, and is also something of an abrasive, stubborn chap.

JJ are you starting a tfk campaign to get yourself the job? (This is in jest)

You’ve chosen to select major games Wexford have lost to highlight the manager’s inadequacies while conveniently omitting the big games won last summer.

Wexford are in a far better place thanks to Liam Dunne and JJ can wait a while longer.

And as a matter of fact - the manager has to take responsibility for the preparation and mindset of the players. That u21camp, including management, was ridiculously over confident before the Antrim farce. And a couple of decisions they made in the run up typified this. Still I don’t hold it against him because overall he’s clearly done a good job.

And a throw away remark about match tickets is hardly a sacking offence either.

that was tough watching today. two very average sides, in a game with little tempo and littered with some awful mistakes. From a Westmeath point of view, the last ten minutes were great, they kicked some excellent scores in that period and put a massively undeserved gloss on the result. They were the better team for the majority of the game, but we hung on in there and were looking good when we went ahead by 2. but then they got the goal, and proceeded to score I think 1-9 to one solitary point from Lyng in that last ten minutes. Nothing to do with fitness for the most part, just a belief really from both sides and momentum.

The first 60 minutes were fairly uneventful. 2 teams just plodding along doing fuck all. Michael Furlong was taken off early, he wasnt going too bad I thought, but his man was doing some damage. He did ship a very heavy tackle stopping their big Midfielder Daly coming through, so it may have been a knock on effect of that either. But we settled into the game gradually after they started a bit brighter, and there was little between them for most of the half.

Second half was very similar, they started better, got up by about 3, and then we again came back into it. Kevin O Grady then kicked a couple of very good points to put us 2 up.

And then it all fell apart quite spectacularly. They hit in a nothing ball to the defence, and Syl Doyle gathered. He played a poor enough pass out, but John Tubritt then played an even worse one which was easily intercepted, and they hit on an overlap and kicked a goal. From the kickout, Paddy Byrne won a free, and as he dawdled to take it, he then kicked it backwards straight to a Westmeath man, and they kicked a point. From then on, anything they did came off. Their 3 half backs all kicked long range points, and Denis Glennon came on and made a difference too scoring a couple.

It was disappointing to lose that way, that despite being second best for most of the game, we fought back, and had the upper hand, only to give it away very cheaply.

Roches kickouts were very average. Wadding was decent enough, and Nevin Rossiter had an excellent game, really kept Heslin quiet and won most if not all of the 50 50 balls in. Just disrupted all the play into him and left him very ineffective from play. Furlong was replaced early, and Tierney came on. Both were ok, but play was very loose in general. The half back line was solid if unspectacular. It was mainly Donohoe and Malone half back, as Flynn pretty much floated around wherever he wanted. Malone was solid throughout and made some very good runs forward. Donohoe was ok in his first start. Quiet enough, and he concentrated more on his defensive positioning and duties than I would usually see of him. He would often be attacking and hitting overlaps, but he didnt do that much today. Flynn had a good game. Scored a couple, hit his usual shots off his left wide, and some balls out over the sideline, but he did well defensively and attacking. I dont think he’d get away with the positioning he had another day, but worked ok for him today.

Midfield was so so. Syl Byrne, on his debut too, was lucky enough to see out the whole game. He looked visibly tired, and their running from deep really caught him out a few times. He didnt do enough on kickouts to either spoil or contest, but its a learning curve. Kehoe did ok. Kicked a nice early point, and competed well, but was too caught on their midfielders running off the ball. He got a black card half way through the second half, and Paddy Byrne came on for him. Paddy was more mobile and stretched their defensive side better, and made them substitute their big fielder. But he gave away as much ball as he did well with, kicked one horrible left foot shot short, and gave away a ball for the point.

The forward line was very hit and miss. Butler started well, but really faded out. He was getting a lot of shit off the ball on kickouts, and it got to him more than he should have let it. Rossiter was quiet too. Rarely got on the ball, and didnt do a whole lot when he did. Also guilty of a poor shot at goal that dropped short. Brosnan was awful. Awful from play, and missed 4 scoreable frees, 3 of them not even reaching the goal from around central 45 positions. Nolan was involved in a good amount of play, but will need lots more experience. Was going up under kickouts he had no business in contesting, and was caught out tracing back at times not being more physical or contesting the ball. Lyng and KOG both looked very dangerous. KOG had the beatings of his man all day, but his 2 points came when O Regan came on and went in full forward and KOG went out around the half forward line. He has great speed, and can get passed players well. But he has one major flaw, and has been happening for a long time. He has no side step and a weak right foot, and because of this, and a slowness in taking shots, he gets blocked down far too often. He had 1-3 blocked today, all of which should have been scores. Thats not to take away from him though, as he was one of few bright spots. Lyng was deadly accurate from frees, and did well in general play too.

O Regan had very little action when he came in, and John Tubritt came in for Eoghan Nolan and competed a bit better, but his concession of the ball for the goal will be a massive blight on him.

We had one good chance to get back in it, there was only 2 in it, and we had a good move and Tubritt played the ball across to KOG for a goal, but he was blocked. It was one of those were a defender was running back, and in his run, blocked the ball with his foot. You’d look for the penalty, but if it went against you, you’d be pissed off. He really should have buried it anyway.

Other random shit. The ref was annoying. He’d blow for stupid little frees, and miss obvious ones. His use of the advantage rule was also really annoying. They had 2 black cards, and us one. Their centre forward got it half way through the first, he took out Simon Donohoe when he laid off the ball and went for a one 2. Blatent shoulder charge to stop him. And from then on, the stupid Westmeath cunts were out looking for cards. Their no 13 won a dubious free, got touched, and threw out a massive dive, and got up waving his hand around looking for a card. Their no 5 did something similar, was running through the middle, and ran straight in to a Wexford player, and thre himself down, and again getting up waving his hand. It finally worked half way through the second half, their no 7 had laid off the ball, and Colm Kehoe made a go at him to grab him at the shoulder. He made minimal contact, but the Westmeath player gave a dive Ashley Young would have been proud of, and again, up with the hand asking for a card. And of course the crowd then were at it too. So Kehoe got a black for that. Late on, their full back clattered Tubritt off the ball when he gave off a pass and got a black for that.

In terms of physicality, Westmeath were very niggly off the ball blocking and holding players on kickouts, both stoppingour lads competing and creating room for their team mates to make a run for a kick. We just arent cute enough or whatever cliche you want to use. Cynical or physical, whatever. And that is one thing that a better more physical and experienced team will do.

I was expecting to lose, but after 60 minutes, was happy enough with how it was going and how we competed considering the age profile and experience of the team. But the last ten minutes were awful. I’d expect Down to batter us the next day.

You’ll win nothing with Tubritts in the team.
