Wexford GAA 2015

Cheers for the report, @Gman.

I’ve just altered plans so I can be in Innovate Wexford Park for the Down match.

Despite getting overrun for a finish today, I think they’ll come on for that game and give Down a rattle.

That said, I haven’t been to a Wexford football match since last year’s Leinster semi-final.

despicable @Gman, despicable.[/QUOTE]

Constructive criticism count. He was excellent today, best I’d seen him with the county. Forgot to mention Molloy came on too. Got himself booked too. Looked rusty, which is to be expected, but good to see him back.

yeah, i fear Molloy is far from right. he didnt even seem to be moving properly, huge boost for the Jimmies to see him back all the same.

Not much needs to be added to Gman’s excellent report.

It’s not possible to overstate the effect of Tubritt’s mistake. We had a purple patch of about 8-10 minutes, where we not only hit 4 points on the trot, but we got on top around the middle, broke up their attacks and burst up the field with purpose, and were really buzzing for the first time all day. Westmeath were all at sea, and the large home crowd were stunned into silence, where they didn’t even make any noise either to berate or encourage their team. Meanwhile the 200 or so Wexford fans were on our feet. We had broken up another attack deep in our defence in front of me, greeted by another appreciative roar from the visiting fans, and as we hand-passed out of defence, Tubritt got a complete rush of blood to the head in the excitement. He received the pass facing our goal, and gleefully went about giving the return pass out to the sideline, but never looked and the Westmeath man saw it coming a mile away and gratefully accepted the intercept. Now two defenders were caught out on the sideline and Westmeath powered towards goal with an overlap. In fairness, the ball was given away almost on the sideline, so they still had a bit of work to do, but they saw their opportunity and finished clinically. They couldn’t believe their good fortune.

It wasn’t a terminal killer blow as there was time on the clock to recover, but Paddy Byrne’s howler shortly afterwards was too much to take. He stood waiting for someone to receive his free on our 65 meter line, and when someone ran to collect it in front of him he inexplicably screwed the pass off the outside of his boot 10 yards in the direction of our goal and the waiting arms of a Westmeath forward. Bim, bam, over the bar and that was the end of our challenge.
What happened afterwards was unfortunate but immaterial really, and just put an unreflective gloss on the final score.

To be honest, I don’t think we would have won it anyway. Had we not gifted them the goal when we did, I think Westmeath would have recovered in the 10 minutes and forced at least a draw but probably won it. Unfortunately we’ll never know. Malone was superb in that second half breaking up their moves and driving forward from midfield/halfback (and winning a few dubious frees). Nevin Rossiter had a fantastic debut against a player as lauded as John Heslin.

Some very good performances from some of the new lads, and enough to be positive about for the future.

I’m strangely confident that we will beat Down. Based on what I don’t know

Preferred team selection for Sunday please, chaps.

Niall Breen
Eoin Moore
Liam Ryan
Ciaran Kenny
Ritchie Kehoe
Matt O Hanlon
Andrew Shore
David Redmond
Lee Chin
Ian Byrne
Jack Guiney
Conor Mc Donald
Podge Doran
Liam Og Mc Govern
Paul Morris.

Obviously if Guiney is dropped and this isn’t resolved Sinnott or Tomkins will come in.

Liam Ryan at full back??

I think the team Dunne will pick will be the following.

Fanning
Moore
O’Hanlon
Ryan
Shore
Chin
C Kenny
Waters
Redmond
O’Keeffe
Doran
Guiney
Morris
Mac
McGovern

Can’t see too much change I’d be shocked if Ryan started at 3 and O’Hanlon at 6 but can understand why people are suggesting it.

This Guiney thing will be interesting to see if he misses out I just have a feeling by Sunday it might have blown over and he will start.

I expect dummy team to be announced mid week and a load of positional changes right up to throw in.

What tactics will Dunne have to bring to the table it should be very interesting, can’t go 15 v 15 anyways.

Throw up your team so and less of your Scalder criticism!

Not a criticism - just wouldn’t put him straight in at FB vs KK.

Fanning
Moore, O’Hanlon, Ryan
Shore, Chin, O’Keeffe
Redmond, Waters
Byrne, Guiney, Morris
McGovern, McDonald, Foley

Foley would play a withdrawn role around the middle.

I’d have no real issue with Liam Ryan at full back if he had been tried there against Westmeath. Just think its too much of a ask at this stage to throw him in.

Perhaps Dunne has something up his sleeve?

Sorry Byrne to start half forward instead of okeeffe with Guiney moving to 11.

Kenny to replace Guiney with O’ Keefe moving to half forward. Won’t be many changes I’d imagine.

Brendan Furlong reporting in The Wexford People that management will finalise Jack Guiney’s fate tonight.

Did it say what he did?

No. Just that he wasn’t at training on Saturday after this alleged discipline breach and it’s not known if he’s been asked back tonight. All a bit speculative.

I think he’s a bit of a douche bag.

Heard he was socialising after the Westmeath game and then was late for training the following Tuesday.

Would he have started v kk? I know we are putting him in our teams to start but he wasn’t great v Westmeath.
