Constructive criticism count. He was excellent today, best Iâd seen him with the county. Forgot to mention Molloy came on too. Got himself booked too. Looked rusty, which is to be expected, but good to see him back.
Not much needs to be added to Gmanâs excellent report.
Itâs not possible to overstate the effect of Tubrittâs mistake. We had a purple patch of about 8-10 minutes, where we not only hit 4 points on the trot, but we got on top around the middle, broke up their attacks and burst up the field with purpose, and were really buzzing for the first time all day. Westmeath were all at sea, and the large home crowd were stunned into silence, where they didnât even make any noise either to berate or encourage their team. Meanwhile the 200 or so Wexford fans were on our feet. We had broken up another attack deep in our defence in front of me, greeted by another appreciative roar from the visiting fans, and as we hand-passed out of defence, Tubritt got a complete rush of blood to the head in the excitement. He received the pass facing our goal, and gleefully went about giving the return pass out to the sideline, but never looked and the Westmeath man saw it coming a mile away and gratefully accepted the intercept. Now two defenders were caught out on the sideline and Westmeath powered towards goal with an overlap. In fairness, the ball was given away almost on the sideline, so they still had a bit of work to do, but they saw their opportunity and finished clinically. They couldnât believe their good fortune.
It wasnât a terminal killer blow as there was time on the clock to recover, but Paddy Byrneâs howler shortly afterwards was too much to take. He stood waiting for someone to receive his free on our 65 meter line, and when someone ran to collect it in front of him he inexplicably screwed the pass off the outside of his boot 10 yards in the direction of our goal and the waiting arms of a Westmeath forward. Bim, bam, over the bar and that was the end of our challenge.
What happened afterwards was unfortunate but immaterial really, and just put an unreflective gloss on the final score.
To be honest, I donât think we would have won it anyway. Had we not gifted them the goal when we did, I think Westmeath would have recovered in the 10 minutes and forced at least a draw but probably won it. Unfortunately weâll never know. Malone was superb in that second half breaking up their moves and driving forward from midfield/halfback (and winning a few dubious frees). Nevin Rossiter had a fantastic debut against a player as lauded as John Heslin.
Some very good performances from some of the new lads, and enough to be positive about for the future.

Iâd have no real issue with Liam Ryan at full back if he had been tried there against Westmeath. Just think its too much of a ask at this stage to throw him in.
No. Just that he wasnât at training on Saturday after this alleged discipline breach and itâs not known if heâs been asked back tonight. All a bit speculative.
