Wexford GAA 2018

7 points to no score after 21 mins.

Laois best attacking player is their keeper according to Johnny Doyle

1-9 to 0-3 nearly half time

This is cuntish. Sugrue hasn’t a fucking breeze. Damien O’Connor wing forward? Jesus

He’s magnificent. Shame about the rest of them. Sugrue tried a clear out and the young lads weren’t up to it sadly.

Laois have a decent breeze with them this half, but they were fair shit. Ross just kicked a handy 14 yard free wide.

That ref is some prick

Taking a point from a penalty isn’t a great sign of mental strength.

Sounds like Laois woke up once they took “Psycho” off

It seemed like it was indicated it was the last kick.

That would make it ok. The first round of the football always throws up a few superb refereeing performances.

Niall Barrett anyone?

Losing a 10-point half time lead. :weary:

Liam Spratt was on duty in Lansdowne Road today which went to extra time and managed to get back to Wexford Park for some part of the Football game. He may be a lunatic but you can’t fault his commitment. I think Gerry Forde stood in to cover him for a while

A peculiar enough game.

Started very well, had a strong wind and took advantage with some fine long range scores from Tubritt and Brosnan. Shanley was good on the frees too. I was never enamoured with Swaine in the goal but he was outstanding tonight, made 2 fantastic saves in the first half to keep clear Laois goals out. Laois’ shooting int he first half was beyond abysmal. Nevin Rossiter got our goal, made a very good run from deep and Looked to have been fouled, but somehow got the ball into the net.

Second half then the tempo from Laois was really raised. Tubritt was our only hope up front and he kicked some super scores from play to keep us ahead. Kingston was turning things though big time. Mick Furlong was on him and it was abundantly clear he was far too small for a long high ball game on a big and able footballer. Finally we put Rossiter back on him and he quietened him back down again. We had a goal chance from Tiernan Rossiter well saved, should really have buried it. Another effort broke down, and as the full back bounced the ball twice and got away with it, his long clearance was being fielded by Shane Doyle. His marked absolutely cleaned him out of it in the air, it was accidental but he turned and as Doyle was in the air, took his legs from him and Doyle landed heavily on his head. the Laois crowd then started booing when the ref halted their line ball so he could get attention and eventually went off. Jim Rossiter looked like he did a cruciate too in the first half.

With 2 and a half minutes to go, we looked good. 3 points up. They got what looked like a terribly soft penalty. I wont argue much because I couldnt be sure of it, but it didnt look on live viewing to be one. It was duly dispatched. Not long after, Tubritt was fouled picking up the ball, but no free. He was then shoved on top of the ball, and as he was trying to get off the ground, for some explicable reason the ref gave a free against him. Laois went up and Kingston missed a handy point from 20 yards which would have put them up. We then went down and Brian Malone made a great run and was taken out of it in the box, stone wall penalty. Shanley and other players spoke to the ref. Shanley then turned to the bench and put his hands up, as if to say “point”. Everyone in the crowd said put it over, last kick. He did. But it wasnt. Our naievity showed then. Should have done a Dublin on it and fouled them deep in their own half, but they worked it up and the corner back pointed a leveller, and that was the last kick.

We were never going to win then. We looked very unfit in the latter stages of the second half. Their fitness was far better and our support play was shocking. Lads never got forward at all and it was left to 3 or 4 forwards against their defence. They got a quick goal and 2 points in ET and never looked like pulling it back.

In all, hard to be too disappointed when we could have won. It was a good performance from a lot of very young players. Should have got the win and seen it out, but thats where experience comes in.

Swaine - did well, some great saves and his kicks were good
Furlong - completely lost on Kingston.
Rossiter - Was playing well until injury forced him off
Carty - was ok. gave away some awful sloppy possession though
Glen - had a great game, really tried make a mark bursting through. Got a lovely early point
Nevin - Did very well too. Had jobs to do at different stages and played well
Doyle - was ok, but has more in him… Scored a fine point
Brian Malone - workhorse throughout. Still prone to turning into trouble.
Daithi - not his most effective game. Got a good early point but have to say, Laois midfield won out
Stafford - queit enough too. Did well on the ball and got a score
Nolan - has a lightning turn of pace, but doesnt use it enough. huge potential
Brosnan - got a nice score and palyed some good ball, but wasnt on it enough
Shanley - took his frees well and got on a good bit of ball
Turbitt - best player we had. Got 5 from play and some great points
Curtis - off injured early

Tiernan Rossiter - was so so. Had a great goal chance but didnt do a whole lot
Alan Nolan - came on for Jim. Was ok, but not as strong as Rossiter was
Nick Doyle - came on, caught a kick out as soon as he got into position, and kicked it away then. Has a bit about him but needs to use his height advantage more.
Barry O gorman - came on and was taken off again
Darragh Pepper - came on in injury time. lively enough, missed an awful effort and scored our last point
Eoin Porter - first game at senior I’d say. Looked nervous but got on a bit of ball. worth persisting with long term if soccer doesnt get in his way anymore
David Shannon - big lump of a lad from the Vols. Not sure if he got much if any touches of the ball

Great sum up @Gman. Not much to add. Should have made a move on Kingston much earlier, easily cost us six points. Playing a sweeper might have helped too.
Fitness levels looked very suspect as the game went on and we have feic all on the bench. Tubritt and Swaine our best players, ably assisted by Glen Malone.

I’m not gonna lie, I was worried at half time but I knew Laois had serious fitness work done so if we could get Donie closer to goal we’d have a chance. Referee was poor for both sides. Don’t blame Wex for taking the point from the penalty, but it obviously looks a dreadful decision now. We’re not very good mind you but it was great fun nonetheless. The Leinster championship would be a fine completion without Dublin.

I missed what was supposed to be a blatant penalty to laois in first half. He threw the ball in then and laois got a handy free. He also gave a laois player a yellow card for blocking a wexford players run off the ball. Even blew it up and gave the free, but yellow and not black.

That was a bizarre turn of events. Seemed like a stone cold penalty

This just after the full back hopped the ball twice, Doyle was up and fielding and the laois lad turned and took him out of it. They were awarded the line ball and the crowd booed when the ref halted play for Doyle to get attention. He went off just after.

An awful foul on poor Niall, he’s only a wee fella and all. His missus is magnificent mind you.
