Wexford GAA 2019

Not sure why Paudie Foley didn’t hit the long range ones.

Yeah, it would have made more sense. Going for a score from 100 yards was brain dead in any case given that lads were struggling from 50 yards.

Agree that was our best chance today of beating Galway minus JC. They will not be as poor as that again.

No disrespect intended

Wexford can only see Galway again this summer in a Leinster Final or possibly the All Ireland Final,

Who should take the frees? They’ve tried most of them at this stage?

Rory O Connor definitely has the style of a hurler who could hit a free for you.

Chin on them is a mystery, no conviction. He’s a poor striker anyway in general play, half the time he drops shots short.

Paul Codd, Jimmy Holohan to date remain the best suggestions

A great man to lash a 21 yard free straight in front of the goals over the net into orbit.
I’d say that’s where Dowling got it from.

There’s another Rathnure man of a slightly younger vintage doing a bit of hurling for the summer in San Francisco.

Rory O’Connor is hit and miss on frees too. Possibly our best option of the attacking players.

Paudie Foley should hit the long range ones. Fanning giving away 0-4 from puck outs and then ballooning 3 second half frees wide was costly today.

Roc or Morris would be better options. @Bandage is correct in saying roc is hit and miss, as is Morris but both I feel would be better and would strike them with more conviction than Chin.

Fuck his free taking drives me soft… he is the most frustrating player on the team…

Tom Dempsey (resident in Glynn-Barntown these days) practically mentions Fanning’s supposed brilliance in every single weekly Wexford People column.

this irks me, commentary yesterdya mention him as one of the best in the country… he’s behind o’keefe, nash, quaid, Murphy, Callanan and even tuohy…

i’d love to see a breakdown of the stats re our puck out syesterday… shocking reading im sure

Tyrrell had a few stats on the highlights last night, but I was tired at that stage. 42% possession retention on our own puck out was mentioned. Not sure if that was the full game, as they had a stat pre and post Davy getting sent off and I zoned out.

He said Limerick with 72% had the best rate over the full season last year.

42% from a dead ball play sounds shocking…

Cummins was trying to break down Fanning’s stroke of a ball but i wasnt really arsed listening to him…

I don’t think Fanning’s completely to blame for the puck outs unless he’s solely responsible for putting the strategy for them together.

From the coverage on The Sunday Game last night you could see that Galway had us figured out very quickly. Trying to leave space between the full back line and midfield for lads to run into to win the puck out. The Galway half forwards got in very quickly.

It’s a particular weakness for us, and has been for the last two season so you’d think Davy would have figured it out by now.

Goalkeepers are an easy scapegoat. Similarly to Cluxton who gets all the plaudits for the kick out strategy, it has as much, if not more, to do with the players positions and runs. The goalkeeper has to have good execution in the play and decision making, but the players make the play work or not. What makes this strategy fail is that whilst the corner backs go out wide on the 21, they are effectively doing fuck all. They cant get the ball in that position and its a tricky play to make having to ping it to them while they stand right on the sideline. Standing motionless means the opposition dont have to worry about them getting the ball and they can sit back that 20m or so to cover the space for other players to run into. Having the corner backs moving from wing to wing would at least give a better option and make the opposition do more rather than covering the space deep.

Its a basic enough tactic they are doing, and has potential to work, but it is too simplistic in its function right now. It needs a lot more tweaking and a lot, lot more movement and other options for the keeper to hit. In saying that, Fannings decision making and execution is not up to scratch either, which means the whole thing is a complete and utter cluster fuck.

Agreed on all points. Sometimes I get the sense he’s decided where he’s hitting it before he’s even surveyed his options. When he gets rattled he often just smacks a few in succession straight to the opposition or into an area where we’re completely outnumbered.
