Wexford GAA 2019

Say nuthing lads

I’d say Brendan is flexible with his opinions.

The best sort of journalist to have. Can be easily swayed depending on who is in power.

Would Alan and Brendan see eye to eye?

I was at this match in Bellefield. Decent game. Dublin completely on top for 50 mins and seemd to be coasting 8 points up with 10 mins left. Wexford got a goal and then completely dominated the last 10 mins and could of even won it at the end. Best for Wexford were no 7 Cian Molloy an absolute dinger of a wing back. Corner Forward Aj Redmond is a tidy operator as is Full Forward Richie Lawlor. Centre Back Kyle Scallan got a roasting at centre back in the first half but moved in full back in the second half and did really well. He is a first cousin of Lee Chin I believe. These teams will most likely meet again in Parnell Park in a semi final.

Bellefield is a grand spot on a sunny day. Old school GAA ground with stone bench seats, grass banks and a shop selling Milky Moo’s and Emeralds. Lee Chin was there supporting his cousin with his girlfriend. If she was my girlfriend I wouldn’t be keen on leaving the bed in the morning to go to work either.

@Bandage, is Kyle Scallan a son of Archie’s?

No. He’s Lee Chin’s cousin though as mentioned.

Not that surprised by the Wexford team. Thought he might have gone for one more scoring forward, e.g. Dunbar. But it seems to be more of the same. K Foley sweeping, Nolan to move to midfield and then either Chin or ROC moving to half forward line and one staying inside with McDonald. Maybe we’re packing the middle sector with bodies due to the legendary right Parnell Park surface.

Just saw Sean Moran’s goal on Buffs Snapchat. There’s no way that should have gone in. An oul dribbly shot that went under everyone. Fuck sake.

Dissapointing not to hold on for the win.
At 0-20 to 0-15 looked in big trouble.
Chin excellent on frees, only missed one and that from own half
Parnell Park as good as full, leading to good atmosphere .

Line ball 40 yards out right in front of our bench with 4 mins 30 of injury time played. Surely we had to tip it down the line and keep it in play, wind down the clock even with a melee/throw in situation in the corner. It was reminiscent of Cork-Clare in 2013.

Dunbar went for a point but hit it harmlessly wide at near post giving them puck out. Despite us having that lineball and a chance to get bodies back where we needed to, we weren’t even particularly organised for the puck out. Rushe ended up getting on it & ref gave them dubious free on 21 a bit to right.

Sean Moran hit a dribbly effort that went past Fanning & all the lads on the line. Don’t think he even hit it cleanly and it wasn’t one of those top spinning squirters that are hard to stop.

Terribly sloppy stuff not to close that out but it looked bad at 20-15 down. Wouldn’t be too confident of us getting to Leinster Final based on today but who knows?

Talk about sticking the boot in.

What did Jim say?

Said there was too much short passing
If this team played a traditional Wexford game they would be winning games
Asked if he would say as much to Davy he replied that if a manager cant work it out for himself he wasnt much of a manager.
He said it in a mannervwhich would suggest Davy is getting the road soon

Said Wexford should go back to traditional style of hurling and they’d win. Totally against current gameplan. Asked what he’d say to Davy and said that if he can’t see it for himself no point in him saying anything.

I guess Jim has a bit of extra bitterness given he’s funding a chunk of it. He’d be very friendly with a number of ‘lash it in long’ hurlers from the 60s so Jim wouldn’t handle how hurling has changed at all either.

Hard to know how to feel after that. Were terrible for large spells. Good start but didn’t build on it and probably lucky to go in level at half time. Most of our big names were anonymous first half and forwards were struggling to win any ball. Shaun Murphy got a couple of long range points directly from puck outs and Chin was very good on the frees.
Were terrible at start of second half and looked like Dublin would run away with it. Fanning made a crucial double save and we got the first goal soon after. Jack O’Connor who had been poor had a great 5 mins and we started running directly at them and they couldn’t cope.
Should really have put the game away once we got the lead. We were well on top and Chin was everywhere. He drove one bad wide and also should have taken an easy point instead of trying to pass to Rory.
Overall draw was probably fair result. Positives were Murphy, Dee O’ Keeffe and Liam Og. Chin was excellent on the frees. Missed one but was from inside his own 65. Disappointed with Rory O’ Connor, should be our main man in the forwards. Some of the changes were strange. Replaced Nolan straight after he scored and don’t know how O’ Hanlon stayed on. He fumbled an awful lot of balls and pushing him into the forwards didn’t make any sense.

When Wexford just hit it long they struggled to win possession. When they played it short and ran at Dublin they got two goals and caused lots of problems.
How anyone could then say afterwards that we need to go back to doing the former is incredible. Jim must have little understanding of the game.

On that final sideline @Bandage mentioned, pretty much every Wexford fan around us said that Dunbar just needs to keep it in play. Bad enough to try score but even worse that no forward was on the end line to try stop it going dead. Players shouldn’t have to be told to do these things, they are playing long enough to know the basics.
Another incident with Jack O Connor highlighted our lack of smartness. At 5 points down Dublin keeper was taking a free from his own 14 yard line. Jack was screaming at ref to try get ball moved back a yard. We were 5 down with 15 mins left and he was helping Dublin waste time. It really didn’t matter if free was going to be hit from 145 yards out instead of 146.

Still a draw is not the worst result, especially if Kilkenny beat Galway. The last round would see us playing a Kilkenny team already through to the Leinster final, while Galway would have to beat Dublin.

Dunbar has a very good lineball in his locker - he scored one from inside his own half in the club championship for one of his clubs either last year or the year before - but that was a real (to quote the late, great Duncan Jenkins) “horses fuck horses” situation. Knocking it down the line for Dunne or someone to race after was the smart call. Ridiculous call against him late on too for a Dublin pointed free for ducking into a tackle when in possession, but that’s an aside.

I also think we should be using our subs earlier. Think we only used 4 today and made our first after 50 something minutes.
