I think it was 2011 that Jackie schooled Simba Berry and our footballers put up a higher score vs Westmeath than the hurlers did vs Kilkenny. Anyway, a few years later Jackie was referencing that game and how KK were under savage pressure against us. I think they won by about 16 points and were up by 6-7 at half time. Nonsense stuff
I think that Tyrrell and a couple of others from Kilkenny may have a distorted view of CWP solely arising from that 2001 U21 Leinster Final. 0-10 to 1-5 when we held out against the wind. That actually was a cauldron. Wexford! Wexford! Wexford!
Not sure he ever lost a senior game there?
Yeah they won by about 10/11 points that day in 2011. They were coming off the back of a heavy league final beating at the hands of Dublin so people were starting to doubt them a little bit when you factor in the previous years All-Ireland too. Iād doubt Jackie would have played very often in Wexford Park during his senior playing career. I remember they beat us fairly convincingly in a 2014 league quarter-final too but most of the meetings tended to be in Nowlan Park.
Youāre not wrong on the 2001 match boys.
I have really good memories of that u21 game, there was a feeling in the ground that night that we had to win. Losing wasnt an option.
Was that the game that brought in Messrs Lambert, Furlong, Kelly, Mallon, Stamp etc into the senior team vs Limerick?
How do we see tomorrow going?
Galway had (have?) better players than us but Iām not sure we can reliably predict how both teams are going and conclude on how well new management teams are embedding their plans.
I made up a post a while back about Galway players being underwhelmed by Shefflin, which was actually true. His blueprint was half forward line withdraw, backs condense the space and just go out and hurl. Remind you of anything? Players were likeā¦anything else tactically and are we going to be using any technology to analyse/enhance performance?
I think Gordon DāArcy will play a pivotal role tomorrow. Heāll need to watch the warm ups intensely and ensure Big Darragh Egan implements his observations. I predict a Galway win as I think theyāll probably withdraw the half forward line, have their backs condense the space and just go out and hurl. I think Whelan and Concannon (is he fit?) will probably have too much for us.
I donāt think we carry enough threat in our forward line, apart from ROC. I donāt think 2/3 of our lads are technically strong enough to thrive at this level. Weāve tried a lot of players in the Walsh Cup and league but I still donāt think our squad is strong enough quality wise. Iād say their backs will be able to hold us to a manageable level.
I would welcome being proven wrong and, in fairness, I havenāt been to a Wexford game in over 2 years and I glanced at most of our league games on an iPad while watching jocko football on the main tv.
Yeah we just donāt have a huge array of marquee forwards unfortunately. ROC, McDonald and Chin would be perceived as the 3 forwards of real renown and weāre in a position to only start two of those tomorrow. There was a brief spell in 2017 where we had Jack Guiney with those 3 but he was a pale shadow of the 2012-2014 version by that stage. Still hope a Ross Banville or *AJ Redmond could emerge to give us a greater array of scoring threat. Seamus Casey did look to potentially be that man around 2018 but then Davy rarely utilised him.
*He now appears to be a wing back/corner back at times despite his scoring heroics in minor 3 years ago.
Gordon Darcy has a big role to playā:grinning:
Who will take yer frees
Probably still Rory OāConnor in the absence of having a specialist freetaker and then Paudie Foley for the ones inside our own half. Unless they spring a surprise and start Chin.
If Chin doesnāt start itāll be Rory
Trevor Kelly was savage around that time, he was bought into the senior team for the Limerick qualifier and played both days v Tipp. What happened to him lads? I cant recall if he played in 2002?
Moved to Boston and think heās still over there
Tony Dempsey brought a few into senior team for the mugging off of Limerick in senior quarter final
I remember a fella called Marty Kelly, he was talked about as the next big thing around 2004, 2005. I dont think he ever played senior intercounty for Wexford. He played for Wexford youths instead.
Missing a specialist since Paul Codd retiredā¦
Will you be heading down the N11 tomorrow to see it?
Iād really look forward to a full report filled with little anecdotes of what happens on your merry way.
I wonāt bother, pal. I can still post a few little anecdotes about my day though, if you like? Things were up in the air but latest plan is the park in the morning and we might even have a picnic.
