Hard to see on TV but the only logical conclusion is Wexford were playing the half forwards deep but their half backs were getting sucked out instead of sitting. Which pretty much defeats the purpose. Twas like Davy Fitz hurling but without the mean defence part.
Wexford were better second half when they kept a few men higher. But Galway fucked that away. Two teams with no great plan I would say, but both teams capable of a lot of improvement without doing much
0-21 to 1-18 I think. Donât think Wexford scored a goal that night. ROC probably would have but for Eoin Murphy nearly breaking his legs in the 1st half of that contest.
Was that Gavin Lee? I was thinking he looked extremely young and innocent to be coming into senior championship but I didnât realise he was only a 6th year. I suppose Pepper is the same age and came on for Wexford. I expected more improvement in Galway when Shefflin took charge.
Yeah, Iâm only going by the commentator - I donât pay any attention to childrenâs hurling in other counties. They brought on another chap Kevin Cooney upfront that gave it away/was horsed off it a couple of times. Albeit more renowned as a midfielder or defender, youâd think Johnny Coen might have been brought on earlier around the middle third to help steer them home. Think he was brought on deep into injury time.
Lee would be the same as Pepper alright. Iâm unreliably informed that a lot of our better young lads are tiny but changes have been implemented at development squad level in this new High Performance regime. Thereâs a separate pillar for S&C, athletic development etc. Young lads, U20, need to be able to mix it physically at senior level straight away. Kyle Scallan would be a loss in this regard apparently - heâs got the physique to impose himself.
Im blue in the face from saying it but every county are still totally reliant on the same lads as 5 years ago. Galway only had the Mannions, Cooneys and Whelan really. Morrissey and Grealish did well at the back but most of their newer players especially the lads they brought on looked miles off it.
I thought Wexford played pure constipated hurling for 60 minutes of that game but with the aid of a Galway collapse and the partisan home support managed to claw it back.
On Mark Fanning, i think hes a fine keeper but youâd wonder if positioning a member of the backroom team with an earpiece behind him telling him what to do would help his decision making? Has anybody ever thought of that before?
They were saying theyâd try and fill up the Clonard end before they sold tickets for the Pineridge end. They only sold 3000 out of 5000 for the Clonard end, so they didnât go ahead with selling for the Pineridge end, thus saving them on asking 10 lads to man the turnstiles.
Saw it from the 27th minute onwards when we were 8-6 down.
Standard didnât appear to be great but a win is a win, and all that.
Missed 3 clear cut goal chances and should have won it more comfortably, but never pulled more than 3 ahead in the second half and didnât really flow.
CBD got 4 from play but should have scored a goal before half time when he went clean through but took it too close to the keeper and struck it off his body.
TomĂĄs Kinsella came on and scored 2 important points in quick succession. AJ Redmond got a great point from deep to put us 17-14 up and they scored the last 2 points in injury time without looking like scoring a goal. We missed another sitter in injury time too.
The backs pretty much won their duels in the second half but we didnât seem to carry a lot of forward threat.
Iâm going to this one - my first hurling match since the same sides met in the league in Croker in February 2020 (thanks again for the premium tickets that night @binkybarnes). Same 15, isnât it? Albeit with a few positional changes. Iâll be hoping for the age old tannoy announcement - there are 3 changes to the Wexford teamâŚ
I was thinking that Foley, OâKeeffe and McGovern would be given a chance to redeem themselves after getting out hurled by J Cooney, C Mannion and Monaghan around midfield last week. Not sure whoâs dropped out of the subs for David Dunne?
Dublinâs backs are fast, athletic and physical. At least they were a few years ago. Presume theyâll still have OâDonnell, OâCallaghan and Smyth. OâDonnell has usually had McDonaldâs measure and Iâve seen Smyth do decent man marking jobs on ROC before in U20 and senior. I think OâConnor can expect lads to dry hump him like Grealish did last week. Itâs a reasonable calculation for opponents to make - stop him at any cost and they probably donât have other forwards of requisite quality to take on the scoring burden. Smyth is comfortable in either defensive line so Iâd say he might follow ROC everywhere.
McDonald had his best game in ages last weekend, but I still think heâs capable of more. It comes down to coaching too I guess. Granted he was isolated a bit but he still tried at least two, if not more, low percentage pot shots when off balance. There are times when he could lay the ball off for a supporting player coming at pace, but he often doesnât look for anyone. You rarely see McDonald and ROC play off each other and link up. Iâm unreliably told that they donât really get on, maybe thatâs it. If we had a half forward line, ROC in a free role between the lines and McDonald and AN other inside, youâd think McDonald could get on the end of some direct balls in and pass them off to ROC bursting through on an angled support run. Iâm seeing a goal for us along these lines on Saturday.
We kinda expect to win just because itâs at home but they battered us in the Walsh Cup. I think we really need Chin and Jacko to mix it with them tbh.
2 and a half hours of my fuckin wages out of the bank account every month to the cairde loch garman and they only send me on the team line up now. No jumper forthcoming, not a single video. Unreal waste of money.
