Wexford GAA 2022

What happened? I turned it off for 5 mins and we 5 points up and all level now

Edit - KK two up

Too many subs from our side, Kk backs bullying our forwards.

Some finish

The lads on South-East reckon itā€™s going to be decided on scoring averages based on the Laois gamešŸ˜‚

Conor Mcdonald you beauty! MOTM between him or Oisin Foley.

Wexford are through to the Walsh Cup Final!

Wexford best Laois by more than KK did

But yeah, we would only have lost that for the amount of substitutions that were made. Apparently the final vs Dublin is in Croke Park with double header with Dub footballers next week?

Yeah did the leaving, is up in Maynooth now. Turned 19 two weeks ago.

Seanie Colfer never play with Jim Byrne?

I donā€™t think so. Not that I recall anyway. Iā€™m not sure how much Jim hung around the panel after 96 as he played more football at that stage at county level. Seanie was u21 in 96. I think Seanie got a run out around 99. Jim was definitely footballing in 98 at county level.

I completely missed that The Darce is involved with hurlers

Yeah he was there in the background today alright, wasnā€™t out with the team or mentors. Iā€™ll write up some other thoughtā€™s later, but overall Iā€™m impressed by the early impressions. Making the best use if our players rather than shoehorning players to fit a system. Make the system about what you have. Great to see so many new players in and given decent game time to impress.

Great to hear that theyā€™re hitting the full forward line quickly.

Is Chin injured or taking a longer break? Or did I miss that he played?

Donā€™t think himself or Rory Oā€™ Connor played did they? Two marquee forwards to come back in there.

Stating obvious,McDonald wasnā€™t suited to a Davy style at all

Direct ball into him and he could do untold

Heā€™s as lean and strong looking as I ever remember seeing him since he started too. Hopefully he finds a way to gain a yard of pace somewhere too

Chin wonā€™t be playing the next 3 months.

Rory oā€™connor went off injured in Fitzgibbon during the week, not sure what the story is Chinā€™s injury.

I really enjoyed that game today, first time in a couple of years where it was enjoyably to watch Wexford play. Yes it is January. Yes it was just a Walsh cup game. Yes Kilkenny were missing their Shamrocks contingent. But it was great to see players playing confidently the way they like to play, not consigned to having to systematically do a specific game plan.

We started very well. The inside forward line was very active. Higgins and Byrne were very lively and Mac won some great ball. A bit more experience and both young lads would have had more on the board. But both showed some lovely touches and really got stuck in. Oisin foley had a great first half. Faded in the second, but took his chances very well. Conor Hearne did OK, but made a few silly errors and didnā€™t get on a lot of ball. I felt McGuckin had the game bypass him. Just seemed a little lost at times and he went for high balls or puck outs by just leaping up with no real intention if winning possession, just jumping for the sake of it. Took a bad shot decision in the second half too when a pass inside was on, just seemed a player desperate to get on the scoreboard. He was given a lot of time, felt it was moreso not to take him off and let him have a chance to get possession and be productive. Heā€™ll get more time and more chances to improve.

Jack and Kevin were fine in the middle, nothing spectacular and maybe would expect more of a pair of experienced players, but a decent pairing option.

Half back line was solid. Paidi will make no6 his own. He was very dominant there. Still needs to reign in the 80 yard point attempts. Egan shouted at him a few times to let it in and not shoot. Flood was excellent going forward. 4 points from play from half back is excellent scoring.

Devitt was the pick of the full back line. Was tigerish in his defending. Really went at it and came out with a lot of ball. Fanning had fuck all to do in goal, made one good save and puck outs were fine.

Morris and Dwyer sparked the forwards into life. Dwyer has a super turn of pace and side step. If he keeps working on his touch and shooting, heā€™ll make that team. Some of the latter subs were a bit light and loose and the team went a little disjointed. But at least Egan was happy to throw out a lot of lads to get game time in a good physical intensive game.

Game plan was obvious. High cross field balls into Mac or into space for the corners. Egan was on the radio after saying how they need to be able to adjust mid game to a running possession game, so great to at least hear him acknowledge different ways of playing. He spoke well from the line to a few guys. Telling Oisin to get back into a defensive position, telling Cian to get his body language right. Very positive stuff. I spoke to a couple of the lads after the game on the field and they said heā€™s very good, very positive to work with.

Listen, we ainā€™t going to win the All Ireland, but we have enough players to be a good team, at least give Leinster a right rattle. There are a lot of top players to come back in, so itā€™s great to see some depth and quality to the squad now. Itā€™s only January, but it was a nice game to be in at.
