Tradition. Probably goes back to the times of shortages. A horrible bony fish. You can buy them live from a tank in the supermarkets and take them home with you in a bag of water to kill yourself. Or else they will kill it for you, hit it over the head twice with a hammer. Two taps. Cut the head off and away you go. In the old days people would keep it at home in the bath swimming around for a couple of days. A fast day as well until the evening. Christmas Eve is to be endured really. Tomorrow is better. At least in my house. But the Poles put the big effort into Christmas Eve.
