I don’t see any contradiction in the post.
He drinks a lot but I wouldn’t hold it against him. In fact, one of the main reasons he has written so many good songs is due to this fact.
Also I don’t know what has gone on in his life, so I wouldn’t cast judgement on him.
Its unlikely we’ll agree on this farmer, and I respect your right to stand up for him. However I dont buy into this thing in Irish society where we glorify alcoholism, regardless of the reasoning.
You believe his alcoholism is the reason for his tremendous output, I wonder what he could have been capable of had he not spent his entire adult life shitfaced. We’ll never know.
He’s got an illness, but he’s still a pisshead, albeit an incredibly talented one.
I think you are being very harsh on him MBB, and I am not glorifying alcoholism. People slip into alcoholism relatively easily and to dismiss them all as ‘pissheads’ is very unfair. For instance much of Shane’s problems stems from the fact he had woefully low selt esteem given his appearance in the early days and is extremely shy. He was trust into the limelight and couldn’t handle it. Of course he also grew up in a drink family (apparently had his first drink at 4 or 5) so the poor divil didnt stand a chance. Alcoholism is a curse.
That said, to try and detach the alcohol from Shane MacGowan, and still expect him to be the same (or even better) is complete folly. MacGowan comes with alcohol, most of his tremendous songs reference alcohol in some way. You mentioned Soho there - one of the best lines in that is about waking up beside the ‘ginger lady’ which refers to the glass of whiskey he had beside his bed.
Of course, it is also tremendous rock and roll.
