here kev, have a look back and see where the snobbery attitude started in the discussion. tim came in giving it loads that the rugby was watched by over a million people and the soccer crowd are cunts because they dont support the lower leagues. And croppy came in going on about GAA.
the schools. you mean the Dublin schools. it has fuck all relevance outside there and not to the effect that your record viewers have any interest in.
The rugby team were doing fantastic for the past couple of years, yet Munster can barely get the crowds in for their home games. whats the attendance for Connaught games like? and in any case, the provinces take away from the club level, and take away the support from them too. They are glorified national teams in the scheme of things with the club level teams.
Just talking generally.
My point is the same as croppys, which i had not seen before posting.
Every sport is the same.
You are making no sense
I suppose it depends on your own experience.
In relation to the club at home I reckon you’d see a good few a both club games and inter county.
However, since I went to College and from working in Limerick, Cork and Dublin over the years that most GAA fans from the urban centres would rarely go to a club game but would be regulars at Inter County games.
so you think that the club game in rugby has not been affected by the provincial set up? that the club level games are well supported in relation to the international support?
The schools? A crowd of overprivileged teenagers getting a half day from school to watch their mates play against equally overprivileged opponents. That’s not really meaningful grassroots support.
The record viewership of 1.6m odd for this rugby game was roughly the same as the 1.6m who tuned in to watch the soccer match on a much less appetising Thursday evening.
Were club games well supported before the Heineken Cup became popular?
I wouldn’t have thought so.
christ on a bike.
Do you think that the rugby followers can crow at the soccer followers over the poor support of the club scene?
No I was just making an obersvation in the discussion, don’t get your knickers in a knot.
I constantly hear it rolled out that the Heineken Cup has killed the AIL so I was just wondering if they actually enjoyed much larger attendances before the hype machine took over than after it. I’d be surprised if this was the case.
it has to have done in some shape or form. There used to be live games on Saturdays on sports stadium and seemed to be a fairly keen interest in it all. Back then you’d hear plenty of who won the league and how it was going, nowadays you’d hear fuck all about any of the teams in it. It certainly doesnt have the same marketing crowd as the provinces or national side.
in any case, it wasnt the point I was making.
In Limerick they certainly did… Shannon and Young Munsters would have had around 3k average… much bigger for local derby games… you’d only get 400-700 at them now. The main thing is that there is no longer any allegiance amongst players now- Before Munster, a Young Munster man would never play for Shannon etc but now that’s gone to fuck also… To be fair, in the mid to late 90s there would be a buzz around Limerick when there was a derby or two or more of the big teams was at home…You wouldn’t even know when the league is on now.
I remember a bit of buzz around Shannon, Young Munster and even Bruff when I went to UL in 97 but didn’t realise that the attendances were that high.
I wonder if there was a similar fall off in the domestic soccer attendance when live games became more widely available.
There were a lot of bandwagoners no doubt, but Young Munster brought 25k to Lansdowne road when they won the AIL in 93 I think it was.
signing in
Ive decided also to support Cork Constitution Football Club for the upcoming All Ireland League

Popey got the line that day also

Correct when Con won the AIL in 1992 or 91 at the decider in Dooradoyle id say you had almost 10k there
Garryowen had a certain element of class about them not like “the boys from the yellow road”, Steven McIvor was a fine out half at this time i remember
No, not what i’m saying. Just that all lower grades have poor support with the odd exception till fi al stages.
People follow the elite levels. Not a surprise.
People don’t have a clue about the game they go to see and are there for the craic. Not a surprise.
Thats just the way it is.
The people just mived with the players in rugby.
The players were at club level.
Warch the gaa club game take a hit when eventually they only play county. It already has since they started playing more county games. People only want to/have time to go to so many games.

You would regularly have got 500-600 people at Enniscorthy club games in the mid 90’s / early 00’s when they were languishing in the 2nd and 3rd division of the Leinster League. They’re now in the top division and just outside the AIL and you’d do well to get 50 odd people looking at a game.
