Who Was The Greatest Hurler You Ever Seen?
Jesus I thought Hartnett was a savage hurler. Plenty hatchet boys in that cork team wouldn’t have had him down as one of em. What age are you that you saw him hurling for UCC. He’s into his 50s I’d say, know he would hav been VERY mature student playing it alright, think he was there in 95 my first yr in the college, one of Lohans was the capt, johnny Enright running the show.

Wouldn’t have been that odd if they saw him as a bit of an enforcer then considering he was at tail end of career and twice there age
You went way over the top with that explanation for Mac Dan. He’s a complete numpty who goes on whatever anyone tells him and takes it as gospel. The fact that Hartnett had to slow down a few young lads in his 30’s is hardly surprising or new. If Mac had any clue he’d have known this. I don’t believe he actually saw him play at all.

Pat Hartnett is 53.

Mac was a regular at Fitz games between 89-95 so. Glad we cleared that up. Fair old trip from Wexford to Cork midweek for games at (educated guess) age 9-15.

Yeah I meant pat, he wasn’t on the 90 team?

He was nearly 30 in college FFS, Fitz conditions suited him, wholehearted mullocker, great attitude no doubt

He was well held that IMO, bar the penalty of course.

Great man to catch a ball, would never have classed him as skilfull though.

Kev is seething that he’s been proved wrong here

I had a relation on the team with Hartnett at the time and another who was in the same class as him so hence why I’d seen UCC games. No need to question absolutely everything Kev, just accept it.

Went back to college to do dentistry

Yeah, im very interested to further explore Kevs state of mind in the lead up to this one

That’s correct. If memory serves me correctly he dabbled with a career in the priesthood in his earlier years.

That said he was a super hurler, although not one of the all time greats, by any stretch of the imagination.

Yeah incredibly physical and committed , not technically great tho

A bit of random useless info - I believe Charlie Haly was also in the same class as Hartnett

Ah jaysus he wasn’t bad technically either. Although he’d probably struggle to make the Clare training panel.

He wasn’t great fagan , massive swing and often hooked or blocked even it fitzgibbon. Not a patch on Cathal casey or Brian Cunningham or even Adrian Kelly (Roscommon ) who were also on that UCC team

Mark foley ( 90 AI final ) and Sean Oneill (limerick MF ) were also on that team they were absolutely massive

I think you might take hurling too seriously if that’s what humbles you. Or maybe you need to travel.
Well that’s really up to me, I love the game and admire the skill levels it brings. I eat, sleep and drink it. Its your problem if you don’t like that. Feel free to be humbled by whatever the fuck tickles your fancy but I’m fucked if I’m going to be told I need to travel to be humbled…

As for your point re Tony Kelly. Out of the 3 selected he was most deserving of hurler of the year. The votes decided same. As for Young hurler of the year the same applies. He was voted by his peers for both. GPA members vote on the award. I know its hard to understand because you’re from Cork and you can’t see how the All Ireland Final Replay could actually have happened but it did. Kelly was awesome this year and deserves the rewards.

If you were talking about the selections then id take your point. Colin Ryan and Bugler had as big a say in our victory if you ask me!

You are flip flopping. Were you at the games or were you going off what others said? Your cousin being in a team means fuck all, you are completely wrong about Hartnett and calling him a mullocker. That’s all that matters.

I’m not saying Tony Kelly didn’t have a very good year. I’m not saying he isn’t a wonderful hurler (I thought he was out of this world against Limerick) but I feel he had too many average games to be hurler of the year. Within the Clare team itself there are more deserving winners.

As for individual awards, you shouldn’t be allowed be nominated for 2 awards, it’s stupid. I said that before he won.

Clare were the best team this year, they win the All Ireland. Were they dominant enough to take more than half the awards? Not a fucking chance. They are young and play exciting hurling, but the media have gone way over board on them.

I made no secret whatsoever back along that I would hate to lose to Clare as for the reason we have all witnessed here and elsewhere and their over the top arrogance and carry on that I witnessed and heard in the 90’s is repeating itself again. It’s amazing though that your team doesn’t reflect it’s support, and visa versa.

Take a deep breath there and show me where I said I wasn’t at the games, and show me where I said I was going off what others said. FACT.

He was a savage hurler. Fitzgibbon came after his career more or less. Very unfair to judge him on it. He was superb for Cork when he played. And even better for Midleton, he gave some unreal performances for them.

Cunningham was a beautiful hurler. Could never make step up. Saw a lot of him when JBM trained the Barr’s to all those Minor & 21’s, would regularly score 1-12 or something. Awesome club player.
