Very sad news. God rest him.

RIP

I look forward to thousands coming to Dublin and marching in order to show their disgust at this murder

Seems a very strange one.

What type of person would be carrying a gun around there. Isnā€™t there a prison there?

Yeah, there is.

He took the detectives gun and shot him with it

A detective.
They stole his gun or a gun from another Garda and shot him outside the station

Thatā€™s terrible. RIP to the Guard. If it was a deliberate act the cunt shouldnā€™t see light again

Mental stuff.

Thereā€™s also a mart in Castlerea for what itā€™s worth.

Shot him a number of times.

And a train station with a direct train to Dublin.

Believed to have been attending a domestic incident. A Mayo native.

Thank god it was the police officer who got shit and not the criminal. Otherwise the internet would have to get involved.

What all happened here?

RIP. Awful for his family and colleagues.

My own father almost got killed in this job over 30 years ago (stabbed multiple times). Was a lucky/unlucky man, depending on your perspective.

Would it be common for gardai in small, fairly rural towns like Castlerea to be going around armed? I know it looks like his rank is allowed to carry a firearm but would many gardai actually do it and is it mandatory or optional for them to do so?

Nasty business. R.I.P.

Castlerea is a decent sized town and Iā€™d imagine some sort of regional HQ. There is also a prison close by. Iā€™d imagine all those regional HQā€™s would have a few detectives attached.

There was a garda in Louth who attended a domestic unarmed and was shot dead.

Would a gun have made any difference in that case?

Guns just enflame the situation. There are armed response units but I donā€™t see the need for guns to Gardai outside of those situations.

Be awful to be in a gunfight and not have a gun all the same.

Saying that Jerry McCabe had a machine gun irrc, and it didnā€™t do him much good.
