Guns are likely to just enflame the situation and Gardai are likely to very ill-equipped to know when and how to use them.
Apart from specialist, trained units called to bring order to a situation there is no reason for Gardai to be carrying a firearm. Thereās not enough cause for this to be the case, Iād imagine the number of police officers shot in Ireland would be extremely low relative to the rest of the world and Iād imagine the number of killings by police officers on duty in Ireland to also be very low.
Think I heard on the radio that this is the 89th Garda to be killed in active duty. Think they were set up after the Civil War so less than one a year. Obviously not all of those would have been shot either.
Was there a need to be carrying a gun? Itās a terrible tragedy what happened and the Gardai is the victim but I think itās safe to say that the more Gardai that carry guns then the greater risk there is of incidents like this and also incidents of Gardai using unnecessary force.
