Fuck medals, they need to build a statue for this quigley chap.
He also holds the record for the most safety gear worn in a hurling match.
Rumour had it he had also had steel toe capped boots. That’s why he could kick the sliothar so hard.
He certainly was ahead of his time when it came to protective gear alright.
Still he was a good forward and it’s fairly laughable that so called hurling experts have never even heard of him.
He was still turning out for NaP when they started winning counties.
His steel capped boots were fuck all use against Clare in the 95 MF when he kicked in 6 yards wide with the goal gaping at him
And he managed to continue to play hurling up until two three years ago. What a man.
So he was the gimp who kept kicking the sliothar
I had Kiely in school. Taught a bit of business and coached the hurling teams with Paddy Kelly who someone above said might be involved as a selector. Kiely was a hard man, you might not have liked him or agreed with him but you certainly respected him.
Good speaker and well able to judge the mood in a group. Not a bad coach either though that was 15+ years ago now. I assume he has moved with the times. Met him many times since and was always sound for a chat.
He reminds me a bit of Michael Ryan, hard nosed with no time for luxury players. I imagine he will sort the shit from the chocolate fairly quickly in that limerick panel and put his own imprint on the team.
I wish him well but not at the expence of my own county.
You’re probably thinking of Eoin O’Neill - there was a chap who scored a good few kicked goals. He would have been around the same time as Quigley. Think he kicked a few against Tipp in 1996 Munster final replay.
Where’s Kiely teaching??
Seems a decent sort, hope it goes well for him and that he’s given a chance, seems a stronger character than Dave Keane.
I roasted the fuck out of Eoin in a quarry cup match in UCC around 94, he stuck to the hurling after that.
That makes sense alright.
Abbey CBS in Tipp town. They won the all Ireland colleges B final last year. Kiely is in his 3rd year as principal there now. I think he started back in 97. He was a past pupil of the school himself.
Well whatever about a football he was well able to kick a sliotar anyway.
Kicked two in the replay against Tipp. He also scored on e orthodox against Cork that year. He is a brother of Sean O’Neill who I think got man of the match in that replay
Christ that replay in 96 was a sickener. Something like 4.8 to 16 points. Did O Neill get 3 goals that day? Last day out for Nickey and Fox.
4-7 to 0-16. Michael Cleary had a shed load of wides. O’Neill got two, Frankie Carroll one and the bould TJ got the other.
That replay was played the same day before the Leinster final. Remember listening to the Leinster final and thinking upon Wexford victory we had it won.
There was a Podge Tobin as well around that time who kicked a few goals for the Limerick senior hurlers. You never see a fella kick a goal in hurling nowadays.
Yeah I think Podge played a blinder vs Cork in 96. We thought we had the next Joe McKenna. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be.
