Paudie mc was the last man to kick a goal for Limerick against the dubs in 09.
Damen Quigley was a fine hurler, nice skilful player. Those 90s teams had some fair mullockers in the forward line, who probably were better off kicking goals than attempting to strike it but Quigley was a nice hurler.
There are a good few players in Limerick who have been under-performing in recent years, I’m sure they’ll admit to that themselves and it will be up to Kiely to either get the best out of them or to cut them adrift.
McCarthy- Roasted by Schutte & Callanan in 2015 and while he’s had some good performances since, our full-back line have leaked goals in big games and he’ll be under big pressure from English. Not all his fault, the way we’ve set up would hang any full-back out to dry but he does need to up his individual game.
Hickey- A shadow of the player he was in 2014 over the past two years. Did always have a habit of running up blind alleys, but he seems to have lost a yard of pace. Still only 27/28, can Kiely get the best out of him?
Hannon- A superb underage hurler, we’ve never really got the best out of him at senior level bar 2011. Has had a lot of injuries and also looks to have lost a yard of pace. Has an abundance of talent but we need to get more out of him.
Cian Lynch- I wouldn’t be too worried about Lynch in general but he was nowhere near as effective as he should have been last year. I think Kiely will get him performing.
Mulcahy- Not all his fault again, the style we’ve played in the past two years doesn’t suit him but he does need to make an impact.
Downes- Has struggled to make an impact in big games since Tipperary in 2014, I do think he has the raw ability but I wonder will we see the best of him.
The half-back line in general does need to be looked at, are we likely to set up similar to how the 21s did in their All-Ireland winning season with a 2-man inside forward line, a deep centre-back and a roaming player in the middle third? Or will he look at the Tipp model from this year and play a three-man full-forward line… a deep centre-back would probably be used in that format too but you’d need some engine on your two midfielders to pull it off? We clearly don’t have the raw firepower that Tipp have but you want to give what you do have every chance to make an impact.
I do think Kyle Hayes has a big future at county level ahead of him, but I’d let him have a spell with the 21s before putting him at centre-back for a senior team. Although Tadhg De Búrca was very young when he first came on the scene in that position, as was Ronan Maher. Kiely didn’t seem to fancy Ronan Lynch at centre-back for the 21s this year, I don’t think Cian Lynch should play there, he didn’t pick Byrnes there for the 21s when a lot of people expected that he would and he was strongly justified in that. Barry O’Connell? Gavin? Does depend on the way he sets up.
I’d like to see Peter Casey & Colin Ryan involved in the forward line next year.
Ye beat us by a point in 95 as well. We had a raft of suspensions going into that game including our current manager after a riot against Waterford. Couldn’t get over ye in two games in 96 then. 97 in Thurles was sweet then. Much like 2014 after years beating the two years previously.
True enough kicked goals are rare enough now. Usually they end up being scuttery efforts just dribbling over the line while the goal keeper was expecting a thunderbastard. Then when the forward gets a good kick they invariably sky it over the crossbar.
Instead of kicking inter county forwards have improvised. Currans batted finish in the under 21 final last week was a good example. Bubbles scored a one in the league semi vs Waterford in 2015 where he threw the ball up high and swung one handed. It was an excellent finish. Maybe banning kicked goals may be the way to go, much like they banned the handpassed goal back in the late 80s.
Handpassed goals were a blight on football and hurling, a well kicked goal is great to see and so infrequent as to be quite the rarity, what could Nicky have done that time if it was banned?
They did ban kicked goals in the league one year. '95 maybe? That was the year you were also only allowed to handle the ball one during the league competition. Thankfully that particular breed of experimentation seems to have died out. The ‘two points for a sideline’ craic was its final kick.
Fair enough assessment, there’s a fair few in there that have fallen in standards massively or haven’t hit the heights we think they’re capable of. We’ll see next year whether it’s been down to poor coaching and management or whether they just flattered to deceive. I’m inclined to believe that hickey, Richie, Hannon and a few more will get back to the level they’re capable o playing at. Downes too although the injury won’t help his cause.
Joe mckenna and eamon cregan only decent limericks forward in last 40 years and joe from Offaly shows where limericks hurling is at.No hopers no allireland coming anytime soon unfortunately
Decent forwards? Kirby and Shaughs were nowhere near decent alright
This guys a fucking idiot, Donie Ryan and that fella who wore all the protective gear that some of the internets foremost hurling blowhards couldn’t recall as well.
Shaughs was the best minor club hurler I’ve ever seen play the game.

Donie Ryan

Had he been a Kilkenny man he would have destroyed back lines with Eddie Brennan but unfortunately for him he’s another Limerick almost man.
A fucking good senior one too. Class player.
He was…he carried huge expectation from a very young age and didn’t have the quality of forwards around him to share the burden unfortunately.
Put on an exhibition in 2007…and was well worthy of that All-Star…class act.
Nearly as good as Eoin Kelly which is a great achievement in itself.
Fucking hell you are some fucking fool
What? You made a joke, I laughed. You were joking? Please say it was a joke.
Ah no they light years better than ye
Go on, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.
We’ll have a weekend of relentless abuse so might as well keep the powder dry.
