Why is Rugby So Annoying?

The main reasons why I dislike rugby are as follows:

 • Irelandā€™s Call - An acquaintance of Mrs. Fran got married at the weekend and we were invited for next day refreshments on the Sunday. The couple are from the north and they were there with all their nordie brethren, a sound enough bunch truth be told. They had missed the match the day before due to the wedding but someone had taped it so they were all sitting down to watch the full game with a few drinks. I was giving the child her spaghetti bolognese when they all stood up and started belting out Irelandā€™s call with great gusto. The child couldnā€™t give a shit but I was deeply disturbed. It all just seems very fake to me.

 • The Rugby Clique - Rugby was a sport that I always wanted to play when I was younger as I had the build and ā€˜skill setā€™ for it. They didnā€™t bother with it in my secondary school so I gave it a go at college. I did reasonably well for someone who was learning the game but the lads on the team were the greatest shower of wankers you could meet. They all knew each other from the local clubs and had no time for outsiders.

 • The Day we matured as a nation - Would you ever fuck off with this patronising shit. The idea that a minority sports game played in Croke Park was supposed to symbolise the entire nationā€™s willingness to reconcile their past differences with the English is utterly utterly ridiculous.

If my comments donā€™t annoy you why do you constantly follow me around calling me a weirdo*?

*Again, Iā€™d prefer ā€œcreepā€, thank you.

@Sandymount Red and @Mac are fucking seething at a few home truths being unleashed about their game.

Answer the question.

If the game doesnā€™t matter to you, why do watch every single game? Fawn like a subservient serf over the Lions? And formulate entire scenarios whereby Ireland can host the rugby world cup?

What the fuck is wrong with you?

I remember a couple of years or so back there was something about Wallace riding Oā€™Driscollā€™s wife, a jew. Did this happen? Did Wallace ride Oā€™Driscolls wife?

Its not that rugby is so annoying, its the people keep posting threads about how much they hate it on GAA boards. If you donā€™t like it, why are you bothering talking about it? I donā€™t like american football, but live and let live, I donā€™t start threads about how much I hate it.

Fucking hell, enough already.
I have grown better at avoiding the hype over the last few years. As a rule, I donā€™t go anywhere near Irish sports media on the week of Cheltenham and the conclusion of the Six Nations in case I explode with rage. The media saturation over the last couple of weeks has been overwhelming though. You canā€™t avoid it on the radio anyway.

Iā€™ve found over the last few years that to the limited extent that I care, I instinctively want Ireland to lose. This is a reaction to years of accumulated bullshit and particularly the bashing of soccer that goes with it, though I know GAA people are just as capable of that. Itā€™s not a position that Iā€™m particularly comfortable with though. I used to watch the Five Nations game as a kid, and while I used to be violently seething that Sports Stadiumā€™s usual Saturday coverage of soccer was shelved (there always seemed to be a good FA Cup game on that we were missing), I used to cheer for Ireland, even though they seemed to lose every game. I never properly gave a shit about it though, and my support certainly grew more passive as I got older and watched fewer of the games, but I still would have always wanted Ireland to win. Iā€™m not sure when it changed, itā€™s only in the last few years, but I find that I instinctively want to avoid the general fawning (in media and South Dublin office in which I work) so hope they lose. Iā€™d like to be able to move past this soon, not because I want to pretend to jump on a bandwagon that I donā€™t care about, but because I know a lot of decent people that are from genuine rugby backgrounds that obviously care a lot about it, and I feel like a bit of an arsehole for begrudging them the joy they get from it.

Not really sure if there is a point to any of the above. For what itā€™s worth, I have absolutely no qualms about having a little snigger when I hear Munster have lost a game.
Excellent post. Very similar to my feelings about it though I was never that bothered about soccer either. I would be benignly indifferent these days to the rugby in that I would rather watch Ireland lose a good game than win a bad one. I was never sure why, as I was properly pro Ireland rugby back in the day, but I think Marianā€™s finucane put the final nail in the coffin. I now usually vaguely want Ireland to win, and ill go to the pub and watch it if the lads are going for a few pints and a chat, but I care less who wins as I get older. This is true of most things though, the soccer included, bar Galway hurling. That is still the only thing I get nervous watching. I absolutely agree about Munster. I am an ABM. Donā€™t like ulster either.

This.

Yep, heā€™s some simple cunt alright but we tolerate him all the same as youā€™d do a child with ADD.

Deep breath then. My dad used play in the front row for Trinity back in the day. I suppose Iā€™d be as close as you would get. I played every grade from under 8 to senior for the club at home, and played for UCG. Iā€™d be as close to a rugby family as youā€™d get. Hurling is a far better game though playing rugby is good crac as well. I was shocked when I moved to Dublin age 17 or 18 by the south Dublin rugby school fraternity but generally avoided them. Most of them at that time wouldnā€™t piss on you if you were on fire in my experience. I got sent off for fighting with one particular Irish schoolboy cunt in a cup match. He didnā€™t the cunt.

Rugby people are people too. Stop the racism.

Quite the contrary. Rugby hasnā€™t been my game since I gave up playing it in 1997.

Nail on the head. I find peoples obsession with music quite strange but I donā€™t feel the need to go posting about it. Life it short enough to be letting stupid things annoy you. Go enjoy it for fuck sake. Donā€™t listen to Marian Finucane, donā€™t buy newspapers, donā€™t watch or listen to RTE. If people want to have a connection with a bunch of under achievers then let them - I donā€™t see why it should bother anyone else. Theyā€™re probably the ones thinking weā€™re odd for spending half our lives talking to a crowd of weirdos on the internet.

Mac is seething about the bashing of his game, heā€™s convincing nobody that rugby matters little to him.

You absolute bastard. I was sick yesterday so only browsing. I read the post from my pal Rocko and it was very good. However, starting a thread called ā€œwhy is rugby so annoyingā€ on TFK is akin to starting a thread called ā€œwhy I donā€™t like child molestingā€. While I would agree with most of Rockoā€™s points, his post is really aimed at slack jawed simpletons like you and dodgy keeper who go out of your way to be offended by rugby.

West Brit media give rugger an easy time
Rugby is popular amongst fee paying well to do South Dublin types
Ireland have a poor record in the history of the 5/6 nations:eek:
Rugby is not universally popular:eek:

Enjoyable and very good read and all but hardly groundbreaking stuff.

FOAD Mark.

If I thought youā€™d ever played sport before in your life, Iā€™d tell you to stop playing the man and play the ball but Iā€™d doubt youā€™d understand it. If its alright with you, Iā€™ll not take on board the delirious ramblings of someone who felt the need to change their username multiple times and then went crying like a baby when he couldnā€™t change it back.

Iā€™ve too much to be doing to be seething about anything at the moment mate. Some of us donā€™t let stupid things get to us. Anyway, Iā€™m sure youā€™ll respond telling me Iā€™m seething or rattled or something similarly unoriginal.

Itā€™d be good if you did, though. Sure arenā€™t we after getting 7 great pages out of our familiar foe, rugger.

Mac is absolutely sickening in his support of various rugby teams on social media.

He doesnā€™t know if he is coming or going the soppy cunt

I canā€™t wait for Macā€™s effort on why music is annoying. That should be a popular one.

My dad played rugby. Both my brothers played rugby. I played rugby. Cunts to a man, with the exception of my father.
